I think your exaggerating a bit. I think Painkiller is "just right". How far do you think you would fly if you were impailed by a 300MPH 4inch diameter 3ft. long metal tiped wooden bolt? Or a double barrel shotgun blast at point blank range. Or a grenade detonating at your feet. I think its on the money. Its just that your not used to this type of physics realism in a game most likely. They may have overdid it a little, but its hard to tell. I have never really seen the effect of a person getting shot in the chest at point blank range with a double barrel shotgun. And even if I did, I don't think I would be whipping out the measuring tape to see how far he flew.
I agree, add to that the apparant low body weight of the zombies and it seems reasonable to me.
Likewise in Far Cry, I've been pretty impressed. Once, while crouching in the bushes, I threw a grenade which rolled between a characters feet, stoping just behind him. When the grenade blew, he flew up and over my head, landing behind me. Looked pretty cool, and reasonable. Haven't been able to duplicate it yet.
Another thing I was impressed by in Far Cry - My son and I were playing the Fort level, we were playing with the graphical settings and shooting the big shark thats hanging by a chain over the wooden deck just to test the various settings effects. Well my son accidently shot the chain holding up the shark. So the chain broke and down came the shark. He had fun for about 20 minutes pushing and manipulating the shark. Eventually he was able to push/roll/slide the shark off the wooden deck onto the shore. Then, with continued effort he got it into the water and played target practice on it. The whole thing looked pretty realistic.
No doubt there are some "silly" games out there. You know, you walk into a chair or box and it flies like 20 feet across the room.
