it's kind of 30$ right now if you buy the 4-pack.. Not sure if they fixed it, but I bought the 4-pack yesterday for 150 and I had 4 extra copies to give and now 5 of us are playing. I wish the "free standalone server" could host campaign mode games for the 4 of us but I don't see how to do that :(

i hosted a coop game on my comcast account with 100kb/sec upload and all of us were in lag hell (though my 2.4 core2duo may have had something to do with that too)

The whine in this thread is very strong, to the point of being almost drunk. Play it or don't simple as that.

It's all about your expectations. As I said before, if you were expecting a GOTY nominee or were planning to compare this to HL2 or Oblivion, you're going to be very disappointed. If you weren't expecting anything, what you got was a zombie movie brought to life.

I'd love more weapons, but what wouldn't be redundant or would turn this from a tense thriller into a bad B Movie? I'd love more maps, but each of them is so detailed and gorgeously laid out, that they can't just whip out dozens of them. I'd like more zombies, but, again, what wouldn't be redundant or added as variety for variety's sake? That's a bad FPSer's perspective......give me more just to give me more.

The coop was done extremely well. The key are the incapactitations which require you to stay together and builds a little team spirit as you are rescued by other players. The different maps really do feel like movies and play differently each time due to the random factors built in.

Versus mode is also amazing fun and raises the difficulty level through the roof against good players.

I'm sure I won't play this as much as I have TF2, because the same level of rewards aren't there, but I've never ever seen coop done this well.......where you feel bonded with your fellow players keeping each other alive......covering each other against waves of hundreds of fast-moving zombies.......in a setting right out of a decent zombie flick.

I didn't like where you were going until the end there. :p I always see people complain "more weapons! More!" But look at counterstrike...most of the weapons overlap each other in purpose...I always felt like filling a game up with extra crap just for the sake of labeling it more just watered down the core experience and introduced pointless complexity and increased the learning curve for newer players. More maps is understandable of course.

Fair enough but L4D could really use a portable laser gatling cannon... not complaining just sayin...

I think most of us agree though, L4D could use a little more variety. But in the end... that's probably a good thing. Right when most of get sick of the game, valve will probably will release a new campaign or two with some new weapons... possibly new enemies. Bank on it.

Regardless... I still have fun playing with friends and scheming our way through a level.

great point - in order to have true success on harder difficulties (and especially in Vs.) you really have to talk to your teammates and coordinate. If you're antisocial, this is obviously going to suck for you and possibly cause you to even dislike the game, but maybe it could even help you out of your shell...

and because there's such comradery against foes that are mostly computer AI (even in vs.), the amount of huge ego trips you tend to see in games like CS is greatly reduced

I've made tons more "steam friends" out of strangers at a rate far quicker than any other game.

I was hoping to organize some close friends to be able to get together and tackle all 4 campaigns on expert, but at the rate I'm going, I'll be able to collect enough strangers made friends to do just that.

me, SP demo only. looks too repetitive, price is too much for what it is.

What, outstanding fun?

This is the first game in ages that I started playing, and after awhile looked at the clock and said "oh crap, its 2am, I gotta get to bed", then played another few rounds.

This. Seriousy, what's wrong with these people? This game is awesome. Apparently COD4 and Halo are the apex of all FPS gaming, yet an original and very fun game is just 'so-so' and 'too repetitive.' Seriously, what's repetitive about L4D that can't be said about every other FPS in existence?

Agreed, if you don't have a cooperative team the game won't be as fun. But that's true of any FPS that uses teams. So... there's that.

I don't know what people were expecting with L4D. It exceeded most of my expectations and is a very fun experience, one of the few games that I'm even willing to bother playing online. Lone gunmen can't succeed in this game (ie teh sniperz), and that probably turns off a large group.

I don't do a lot of online gaming these days. Not sure why I fell out of it. That said, I just finished the first campaign on SP and thought it was pretty good fun. It could get repetitive, but there's definitely potential for lots of new campaigns. Hopefully lots of player made content? Would love to see a huge community spring up for L4D to produce gobs and gobs of campaigns.

I'm enjoying it, but it IS a rather shallow game. Play it for 30 minutes and you pretty much see everything it has to offer. I payed $49.99 for it and I think it feels more like a $29.99 game. Enjoyable, but I don't see myself spending more than a month or so playing it, and when I'm done with it, I'll probably never play it again.

Played co-op with the demo, did not see what is so special about the game. I give it a "meh."

I give you a meh. Try playing it with 3 friends on expert, otherwise your not playing the game.

Seems like Valve had that on their mind, considering Louis (the Black character) always says "I owe you a big one" when the female character heals him.

Not quite, most online games are almost exclusively human players, and thus it is possible to have servers of varying intensity. With L4D, the AI is only going to let up so much depending on the difficulty, however even on easy you can still easily get screwed if you try and play Rambo as all it takes is one hunter or smoker to incap you and you'll die without aid from your teammates - it'll take a helluva lot longer to die, but the game makes it inevitable without teamwork.

Its not the greatest evolution in FPS's but no one ever claimed it was.
The graphics and sound are MORE than good enough to make the action engaging and thats whats important. I'm not big into COOP play and thats probably the only reason I wont buy it.

Many folks have compared it to Serious Sam and I agree with them. Looking at pretty colors is only amusing for about five minutes. Blasting hordes of monsters is amusing for hours on end.

Most of the high-end, "next-generation-graphics" titles we've seen recently have really sucked ass. If Left 4 Dead comes down a little in price I may play it for what it is: A pretty darn good way to kill time and have some fun.

When they come out with Deus Ex 3 I'll be more critical of gameplay quality.

Yeah 39.99 makes it go from FAIL to Meh

Apparently I make up a very small portion of the population that agree's with me so Valve must have priced it right for the consumer base.

I paid $44 for it and I'm absolutely certain I'll spend more than double the time playing this game than I will watching Kung Fu Panda which cost $22.
