iOS 4.0.1 runs like shit on my iPhone 3G... it sometimes takes up to 15 seconds just for Safari, Messaging, or even my contacts list to load.

Perhaps this is Apple's way of convincing me to upgrade my phone. It's working... that new Droid X is looking better all the time :)

Just roll back your phone to iOS 3. It's not hard. I'm sure I posted instructions somewhere around here.

disable indexing and spotlight - problem solved for 3G

period.

I tried it, and it didn't help all that much. Now my average application load times are more like 10 seconds instead of 15, which is still nowhere near the 5 second load time average I was seeing when the phone was new.

you have to hard power down twice like the dude said. thats a power off using power button and main button; release when you see the apple logo.

do that twice.

it probably helps to do this fresh before indexing has occurred eh?

makes a huge difference. spotlight sucks anyways i've used it Not once on my 3gs.

but man 10 is hella better than 15. make sure if you JB to not enable graphical shadows (background wallpaper). the gpu on the 3G isn't as strong as the 3GS

I've been running this a few days and it does help in some situations. At first I thought it was a complete fix (fixed lag in maps, some of the lag when trying to type an address into email) but it still lags a good bit after entering the first few letters.

I'm also still getting tons of typos.

I did do the hard power off thing but I'm going to try restoring/wiping mine and see if that helps.

I'm not a "fanboi". I will call a spade a spade. You're the one complaining in an Apple forum for something you should be complaining to APPLE about. Chill out and give them a call and see if they'll rectify the situation before you freak out and start attacking people on a forum. I was simply giving you first hand information from my experience. I never claimed to be an Apple expert. If you hate Apple so much then sell all of the stuff you own by them and be done with it.

Also, how hard is it to click, Cancel on a notification? iTunes will never ask you again.. and if you get a notification on your phone.. just ignore it. You would have to plug your phone into iTunes to even get it to update anyway, so clicking cancel should be instinct.

I happen to like Apple products, but that can change and I'm not so blindly devoted that I wouldn't use an Android device, or a Windows computer. In fact, I do so pretty regularly.

No, you're just a liar.

And this is a FORUM. Not a compliments board. I'm sharing my experience with others. If you don't want to read it, then don't respond to it.

ok I think iOS 4.0.2 fixed Safari browser crash problem....anyone?
iOS 4.0.2 only fixed the remote code exploit vulnerabilities. Nothing about Safari was changed.

Just wanted to update that spotlight searched helped *some* situations (like typing stuff into Maps, pretty much any slowdowns having to do with cached stuff..) but definitely not all, or even most of the problems.

I still have unexplained horrible typos and bizarre lag (like when typing in pw to unlock the phone). I've done side-by-side comparisons with a 3gs that was downgraded to 3.x and it's very noticeable in comparison. Also other problems, like the camera taking literally 10+ seconds to open even on a fresh reboot with no other apps running. I went to an Apple store and it sounds like the employees are very aware of these problems even with spotlight off, but basically aren't supposed to talk about it and can't do anything to fix it.

And no, they will not swap the phone out for one with a 3.x firmware.

Well, there actually isn't a need for them to as you can use the LifeHacker guide to downgrade really easily. Did this on a friend's 3G and it worked fine.

Is it still unlockable and/or jailbreakable? Most guides for 3.1.2 still state that they need an old baseband.

Thanks but I'm not doing that. I manage ~50 phones with AT&T, it's a company phone, etc etc etc. The apple store told me doing the firmware downgrade can void the warranty with AT&T (although I don't know how they'd know?)

This also means every time I plug into iTunes I'm going to get bothered about updated software - not to mention that I deal with pdfs often and don't want to worry about whatever security problems 3.x has..

YellowSn0w (and/or UltraSn0w) will now unlock every baseband out currently. You can use PwnageTool to jailbreak 3.1.2.

Netflix now just announced their player for iOS4. Grrr. Have to decide now between usable phone and watching Netflix.

Well.. no way of knowing, really. You'll only get alerted once. You can select, don't prompt me again. The PDF exploit has a fix in Cydia, if you are super worried about that.

But that's cool.. I understand the hesitation if it's a company phone.
