wtf that's ridiculous. If it needs wiped or whatever then iTunes should handle it - isn't that what apple is all about? Not having to tinker and mess with crap to get it working?

I'm just trying to help you out. You may have illusions about Apple "just working" but its not the case. Is this really such a suprise even though it was the same exact issue from 2.2 to 3.0? Anytime its a major update, you should do a restore to prevent issues. 9 out of 10 people may have zero issues with the update but a lot of people do. I know a lot of people who "upgraded" from XP to Vista without issues, but I would never do it. Some people just install new vidcard drivers right over the top of the old ones without issue, but I would never do it.

I've already talked to a few people who had the same issue and it was fixed by doing a restore instead of an update and I pretty much guarentee it would work for anyone who is having these issues. What is the problem any way? Because it takes 5 minutes more to put everything back onto your phone?

I've had the same issue pop up occasionally over the years on my 1st gen. Random things seem to help such as restoring, removing all apps, reseting settings, etc...

I came here to ask the same question. I usually only notice it after I've been using it for awhile and there are a bunch of apps hanging around in the task manager.

Multi-tasking is nice but I don't see why a calculator application needs to hang around in the task manager after close it.

I've restored my phone with 4.01 and I still have bizarre typo/keyboard lag problems.

It usually happens when the keyboard is supposed to pop up (which usually takes .5-1 second longer than before). It accepts the first few characters before it starts to lag when accepting input. I swear it also seems pickier about hitting the keys perfectly centered.

I've played with an iPhone 4 and it doesn't show these problems at all. I'm able to type full speed just as before without typos or input lag.

The problem is admittedly 'minor' in that someone new to the phone wouldn't notice it, but something with the keyboard/input has drastically changed since the last firmware. Again, the iPhone 4 seems fine, so I dunno what the deal is. I have a 3GS, and I didn't get it when it first came out. I've had no crashing or other problems with it - I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Mine seems to have leveled out. I still have more crashes than OS #3 though.

Backgrounding is useless. I do like the faster camera snaps though, as well as touch-focus on video.

I'm one of the ones who's phone is now ridiculously slow with OS4. Is there any way to downgrade it back to 3 without losing all the info i have on the phone? Or any easy way to downgrade at all?

yes as long as you saved your SHSH blobs using umbrella or with cydia . no problemo.

always save your shsh blobs immediately after a new version so you have CHOICE.

3G can go back without blobs; 3GS requires SHSH blobs.

I didn't jailbreak my phone so didn't have those things backed up. Any other way to downgrade back to 3?

I'm not going to deal with jailbreaking or whatever, I just want a phone that works. I hate to keep harping on this; but that was the (seemingly) huge upside to the iPhone - unlike the bberry you don't have to mess with which firmware works best etc etc etc

At least bberry doesn't make it impossible to roll things back.

I still can't help but wonder if this is intentional.. Speed problems? Solved with the latest greatest iPhone. Arg.

Here's what I did (getting slowdowns too, 3GS 16GB):

Made an update to iOS4 from 3.1.3 with Spirit JB. The phone couldn't authenticate fully with my network after that (didn't get a data connection, just voice). Called the support and was told to do a factory restore to iOS4.0 and that many people get that. And here's the first wall I encountered - you need to connect to Apple servers to do a factory restore. And I have my internet through the iPhone (tethering's for free here). Since my phone had to be restored to get my data connection back, there was no way for me to do it at home... *sigh* Not really a restore, is it now? Well, I took it to work the next day and did the restore there. Lost all my SMS (no way to back them up...) but at least I got my data connection back (the phone was fully stock then). But I started to get weird slowdowns. Like the phone was choking on something once in a while. For example when connecting to USB, the lock screen would become very choppy and laggy, for several seconds. When I'm in apps, a similar (though shorter) behavior can be observed - sometimes those apps just slow down for a brief moment (which is annoying as hell). Currently running iOS4.0.1.

Also, some of the apps (even the iTunes Store) forget about the internet connection when they're "minimized". I have to double-tap the home button, force quit them and start them up again - then it works fine. Happens in the browser (both Safari and Atomic Web Browser), iTunes Store and BeejiveIM. I got used to the way "multitasking" works on the iPhone and I don't really care its not really running the whole time in the background, but me having to force-shut stuff before I can use it again is another pain in the ass. Again, the phone has been factory restored, I got like 20 apps on it now and a bit of music, so there's nothing I did that could trigger this behavior (and there's no JB for iOS4 on 3GS yet, at least not for my case - only Spirit JB before). Since Apple has been yapping about it so much, how awesome and great and what not this new iOS is, they could have at least made it work as they claim ("just works" my ass).

Other places I've noticed major lag (again, not there with 3.x)

I have a passcode to unlock. Most of the time when I swipe to unlock it 'hangs' while I'm typing in the 4 digit passcode.

When sending an email, when I tap the 'to:' field it takes a second or two before it lets me type, and once I start typing it lags (I guess as it's searching history for autocomplete items)

I've done a restore with no luck. It's a 3gs, not that old and I had no problems at all before this update.

I'm not going to JB my phone. I had it JB broken, but that messed up the tethering. Ya, i used the tethering that JB had, but that was far worst than the one that's provided by my provider (Rogers).

I'm sick enough of all this crap that i'm dumping my iphone, despite having over a thousand dollars worth of apps purchased. This built in obsolescence is ridiculous. I haven't even finished my contract yet, and now i can't even use my iphone. Yes, i can make calls or txts, but that was only 5% of my iphone usage. I don't like waiting a min for programs to load. I don't like having programs crash all the time (and i have not had a single program not crash yet).

I don't mind paying hundreds of dollars for a phone, but i want it to last for several years. I am so glad i didn't get the ipad yet. Apple will never get another dollar from me.

I had same problem with keyboard lag with 4.0.1 I am glad I am not the only one :)

Really? So I'm assuming you have the 3G.

Apple has done more to revolutionize the cell phone game than anyone else. Apple, while they don't do everything right, has caused the carriers to bend over backwards to accommodate the phone rather than the phone having to bend to the carrier's will. There have been a few compromises, but nothing like what we're seeing with Android handsets now having embedded game demos and other crap ware.

If you want to get rid of it fine, but don't say that your phone isn't lasting long enough. You didn't have to upgrade to iOS 4, and if you call Apple they will gladly fix it for you. I've been in my local Apple Store when someone came in after the iOS 3 update borked their phone. They simply swapped it out for another with the iOS 2 firmware.

So stop complaining here and just get them to fix it.

That is ridiculous and completely unreasonable. Did you even read what you typed?? So this means we're now stuck on iOS2! Plug into iTunes and you're not prompted to upgrade to the latest 3.x... Only 4.

The problem I have is that I suspect Apple did this intentionally to push people to upgrade.

Try this - close all running Apps. Power cycle phone. Open up the map program (built-in one) and look at how ridiculously slow it is to use - from typing in an address to scrolling to everything. Nothing has changed or been added that would make any different having to do with the speed of the phone itself.

No, YOU ARE misreading mine. I said after they had done the v2 to v3 upgrade, not v3 to v4. I said, you don't have to upgrade.. no other phones offered system updates like this until the iPhone. The hardware is simply slow, so either keep it and be happy with v3 (by hacking it back, or calling Apple).. or get rid of the phone.. simple as that.

The problem I have is that I suspect Apple did this intentionally to push people to upgrade.

You aren't required to upgrade to v4, and it's been known for A LONG time that if you upgrade you are typically stuck with that firmware. They didn't have to give you v4 at all really.. they could've said that you're stuck with v3.. then everyone would be complaining about how Apple is "forcing" you to upgrade to get v4.

I have serious doubts that these problems have to do with 'slow hardware'.

Again, close all apps, power cycle, open maps or contacts and try to search for something.

It happens in specific places (when keyboard is supposed to pop up in maps, contacts, and email) and specific times (after one or two characters are entered in a field). This is aside from the typo problems that didn't exist with v3 and don't happen with the iphone 4.

These are glaring obvious problems that ANY sort of software/firmware test group should have figured out right off the bat. If the new firmware cripples the phone then apple shouldn't even let us install it - they have no problems trying to keep people from doing all sorts of legitimate stuff to their phone yet force updates down our throat that break it?

Ridiculous.

They need to at least split the software updates between the new and old phones - but to only have iOS 4 updates which cripple existing hardware is a pathetic excuse to push people to upgrade hardware.

What do you mean i didn't have to upgrade it? I was getting the nag screen all the time while using the phone that i should upgrade. And that wasn't coming from itunes, but the phone itself while i was using it.

People like you are the definition of fanboys. You have this blind devotion to Apple, that they can do no harm. You come up with lies to support the product and build this worldview of Apple that doesn't exist. You just happen to be in an Apple store when a customer came in with a similar problem to ours, and you're telling me the Apple store swapped the customer phone with another phone? That is so BS. Apple wouldn't 'simply swap' it with another phone, the fact that you even say that shows how little you know about Apple.

I'm not a "fanboi". I will call a spade a spade. You're the one complaining in an Apple forum for something you should be complaining to APPLE about. Chill out and give them a call and see if they'll rectify the situation before you freak out and start attacking people on a forum. I was simply giving you first hand information from my experience. I never claimed to be an Apple expert. If you hate Apple so much then sell all of the stuff you own by them and be done with it.

Also, how hard is it to click, Cancel on a notification? iTunes will never ask you again.. and if you get a notification on your phone.. just ignore it. You would have to plug your phone into iTunes to even get it to update anyway, so clicking cancel should be instinct.

I happen to like Apple products, but that can change and I'm not so blindly devoted that I wouldn't use an Android device, or a Windows computer. In fact, I do so pretty regularly.
