See, web filtering software is extra great when you're a kid if you can get the passwords, because then the parent lets their guard down and doesn't really think to keep sufficient tabs. I remember when I was in HS I managed to get the pw to the firewall at some point and would just disable filtering when I didn't want to be observed. Turn everything back on when done, wipe the logs, all set! I imagine filtering solutions 10 years later are a bit more effective, but the point is if he finds some way to completely bypass it and leave the illusion it's still working you're boned. Maybe he'll brute force crack the password protection on the software? =p

leo laporte recommends open dns on his show all the time.

You're damn right! Sure, kids are going to eventually find a way around and get porn or whatnot but they have to work for it like everybody else did. Besides, half the reason kids do it is it's taboo.

About 11-12 years ago, I installed "Cyber Patrol v.3" in my PC (Win 95) to stop my younger brother going on line in certain time. He was allowed to go online 2hrs/day. We used modem back them with a whooping speed of 33.6Kbps (which later on was upgraded to 56K). It's the best parental control software back then, but he was able to hack it just a couple weeks.

Cyber Patrol v.4 was a little bit harder to hack after it was just released, but my brother did it nevertheless. I tried unsuccessful other sw such as Net Nanny and others.

After about a year, I was sick of the cat-and-mouse game with him. Since we had an external 56K US Robotics modem (cost me $200), I just hid the power adapter instead, lol.

Seriously. When I was 12 I was showing my dad how to install DOS games and configure EMS and XMS memory to run them. Boot disks and all.

I set up a different wireless network for my kids' computers, and it runs through a ClarkConnect proxy server for filtering. It wasn't that difficult to set up.

As to whether or not they can get around it...maybe eventually. My oldest will never figure out a way, he's just incapable of staying one step ahead of me. My middle has the mental capacity and will probably try just to see if he can. I'm not all that worried about it but my wife insisted on it. She's the one who gets royally pissed off though when she goes to use the computer in the living room and it blocks half of the legitimate things she tries to do.

Just remember the password. I ended up formatting and reinstalling Ubuntu on the kid's machine, because Kongregate had the word "hardcore" in it, no one could browse any legit sites, and I had no idea what the password was.

I've setup K9 Web Protection: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

Its free, easy to install and configure, and does a really good job. One of the tests I did was to just google boobs (thinking like a preteen here) and it shut me down. My kids are nearly 7 and 3 so they're not on "the hunt" yet, but it does stop them from getting to places they shouldn't. I'm pretty sure it has some logging features as well, but I haven't had to use them at all.

The need for such software was made apparent when my oldest went to www.poptOrts.com instead of www.poptArts.com. Thankfully the site was a generic ad page, but other typos could lead to worse.

I don't see the point in trying to prevent adolescent boys from fapping. If I ever have one, I'll give him "talks" about porn, sex, and, most definitely, hiding porn and fapping evidence (I don't want to see that!).

Manowar is a child. He has no business judging someone else's parenting.

k9 is what I used. I don't have a single complaint about it.

My friend installed Netnanny on his kids computer. I don't know how effective it is but I heard it works pretty well.

1. talk to them
2. TELL them that you are filtering them
3. depending on how liberal/conservative you are, remove restrictions as they mature

for some girls in my family I setup cyberpatrol + windows security etc which was pretty effective ( as long as they don't get your windows pw it is decent)

technically you can get anal about it and do the following if you are desperate:

1 - get a static IP from your ISP
2 - lock the router in a box (holes for cables etc) so they can only unplug it but not reset it
3 - lock down the router/modem as best you can
3 - only allow ports 80 and 53 outbound
4 - limit 53 to openDNS' servers
5 - configure openDNS to block everything naughty (+proxies if possible)
6 - install netnanny/cyberpatrol
7 - lock down the pc (limited account, SRP, tough-LSP, etc)
9 - take them to strip joint and let them know that if they ever watch porn you won't take them there again... if we are talking about lesbian's take them to Disney on Ice

I would add that Tomato and DD-WRT allow you to limit connectivity also. So you can limit when the computer can and can't be online. If you have the account on lock down then they won't be able to spoof the mac address. It is effective.

The biggest threat at this point is ssh. There are TONS of free ssh accounts. So blocking the ssh would be something else to do. I know that tomato can block it.

Should do 2 things. Get some software like netnanny or the such and also talk to your kids and let them know why you've installed it, let them know it's not perfect and it can't block everything, and you'll be checking up on that computer (to see if they've found a site the blocking software isnt blocking).
Could also put the pc in the tv/family room. Give em headphones.

At 20 years old, we need pics, and statistics lean on her already having sex multiple times with multiple partners. I'm sure she knows just as much about the subject as you do. We're talking about rambunctious 12 year old kids on a quest to test their google searching ability.

while i have a few things to protect them from the evil pr0ns and bad things they could be looking for online, its almost more to protect my computers/ network from what they might bring in by going to those sites. i talk about this stuff regularly with all 3 of my kids, especially with them wanting to interact with their friends on dumbass sites like myspace. awareness goes much farther than locking them down, and mentioning it is all logged and emailed to me regularly is fairly effective as well.

She was doing this at twelve, too. I was just pointing out the OP fallacy that this was a boy thing.

And no, I'm not posting Pics of her for you pervs here.
