I already had 768/128. I called three times over the last six months to get upgraded to 1.5, each time they said no problem, and nothing ever happened. So I didn't lose anything. With that kind of service, I'm happier that they only get $15/month from me from now on.
I've heard that in some areas where they have FIOS, when new customers call to get the $15/month DSL package they are told it's no longer available for a variety of reasons (no available slots in the CO, whatever), and it's FIOS or nothing. Maybe they are using the $15/month DSL offer to get people to call, then try to upsell them on FIOS.
FIOS is very important to Verizon because every FIOS customer also gets converted to digital phone service. That's one less line that Verizon has to worry about competition (they do not have to make their fiber available to competitors like they must for the copper wiring) and one less line that they need to provide battery backup for in the CO. The customer now supplies the power to make the phone work.
Oh, and Merry Christmas to you, Adica!
