I was going to get it until my dad pulled the old, "If you want it, you can pay me every month for it". Unfortunately, I don't have the cash to do so, or I would have nixed my DSL...

Verizon isn't getting a dime of my money. They can juggle donkey nuts. I'll stick with Optimum online, it's plenty fast and reliable for me.

As cool as it would be, I just honestly have no need for that kind of bandwidth. I suppose I should hand in my nerd card. :(

Thanks for the idea Kranky! I heard about that deal, so I just called, and they gave me the $15/month too. I didn't have to deal with the FIOS begging because it's not available here yet. Anyways, you just saved me about $15 bucks a month. Merry Christmas to me, and Happy Holiday's to you!

that's funny, I've sworn off OOL forever myself. Verizon is at least honest about their practices.

hold on, they gave you the $15/mo. deal (at the same speed) just because they didn't have FIOS in your area ? I've never heard of that... I can understand Kranky's situation where it's available and he had more options for speeds.

Are you sure you didn't get downgraded to 768kbps / 128kbps to get that price ?

I have fiber to my house and inside and I will get the amazing speed of 3Mb/s down from SBC. Even the local cable company offers 3x that. They do promise me IPTV, huge download speeds, and many other future wonders in the fancy brochure they gave me though. lol.

Well, if they don't let you run a server, I can't see needing this much bandwidth either. I think this is mostly targeted to people that fly the old skull and crossbones...

I already had 768/128. I called three times over the last six months to get upgraded to 1.5, each time they said no problem, and nothing ever happened. So I didn't lose anything. With that kind of service, I'm happier that they only get $15/month from me from now on. :)

I've heard that in some areas where they have FIOS, when new customers call to get the $15/month DSL package they are told it's no longer available for a variety of reasons (no available slots in the CO, whatever), and it's FIOS or nothing. Maybe they are using the $15/month DSL offer to get people to call, then try to upsell them on FIOS.

FIOS is very important to Verizon because every FIOS customer also gets converted to digital phone service. That's one less line that Verizon has to worry about competition (they do not have to make their fiber available to competitors like they must for the copper wiring) and one less line that they need to provide battery backup for in the CO. The customer now supplies the power to make the phone work.

Oh, and Merry Christmas to you, Adica! :)
