I loved Doom 1 and 2, and a lot of people who did love those games didn't care for Doom 3, but I personally thought it was great too.

Now, Rage kinda sucked. Quake 3 definitely sucked. But Doom 3? Good stuff!

I'm frankly excited for BFG edition, though it's hard to tell how much of an improvement it is from the video's I've seen so far. Anyone know what exactly they did? Doesn't look like any polygon increase, maybe new textures and native widescreen support? Is that it?

I played it and liked it..but really have no desire to play it again at this point just for some better graphics and little stuff here and there.

I also played Doom 3 back in the day and liked it. I wouldn't mind playing through an enhanced edition but really don't want to pay $$ for it again having an original copy with all expansions sitting on my shelf. That and word is it's been heavily consolized. They've gone to a checkpoint system too, no more saving the game before a boss fight which is really annoying.

RAGE just wasn't finished, there was no ending to speak of.

As for Doom 3 BFG... unless they add lots of content (as in another 20 hours of game play) then it is just rehash of something, so, from what I seen, this is just a money grab attempt, with the minimum amount of changes.
Which means that it will only be worth $5 max on the Steam/Amazon sales.

I didn't like doom3, so I won't be buying BFG.

D3 was too monotonous for me, it just seemed like corridor after corridor of darkness and enemies popping out to surprise you every few moments. I got bored fairly quickly and didn't finish it.

Doom3 was decent, storywise and gameplay wise.... however do I want to replay it? nope.

^ that said, it was still better than most first person shooters are.

Im not a big fan of first person shooter(s), not really into the competitive element in multiplayer online, and the single player elemental usually sucks in that type of game.

I liked Doom 3, but this new edition is such a scam for the PC. It is just Doom 3 console edition.

I thought Doom 3 was a LOT like Doom 1 and 2. I think those that didn't like it were expecting it to be more like the more modern FPSes like Half Life, Quake, or even Half Life 2 and Farcry. Dark corridor fighting with monster closets everywhere has always been a hallmark of Doom games. What 3 didn't deliver on was fast paced fighting large quantities of monsters at a time.

I liked the game quite a bit, because it felt nostalgic. But after playing it again recently, I couldn't really get into it for much the same reasons I liked it in the past. It felt too much like playing the original Doom.

Details on Doom 3 BFG:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Tim-Willits-Doom-3-BFG-Edition-FPS-PC-Gaming,17415.html

Personally, I enjoyed Doom3 and am looking forward to this re-release. Means I don't have to dig my discs out to play it again, since it's coming to Steam.

I'm all for new and improved and like most of what I read but I don't like how they talk about the checkpoint system as being some kind of new "Rage Tech" thing that's an improvement. In my book, a checkpoint system is a major step back from being able to save the game whenever I want. There's nothing more game breaking than having to repeat the same 5 or 10 minute sequence leading up to a boss or major in game event, over and over again until you get it right. That's where I usually get off the bus.

This.

They're apparently re-releasing the same damn game for $50. Why would I pay full-price for a game I already bought? I bought the original years ago... on Steam, no less.

As far as I'm concerned, Doom 3: BFG includes two things over the original:

1) Widescreen support
2) Extra levels

id, can't you just patch the original game to include widescreen? Do you really have to release the whole game over again? Seriously?

I think it's funny how people consider Doom 3 to be such a technically-advanced game for it's time. In many ways it was, but... it didn't have widescreen, and it still doesn't have widescreen.

Hmm, I ran Doom 3 again a couple years ago when I got my widescreen monitor (1080p) and it worked with widescreen. But I honestly don't remember if that was native support or some mod. I'm tempted to reinstall it and try again.

The new BFG edition includes the RoE expansion and some new level content as well and some built in functions like the duct tape mod. Supposedly the graphics engine and lighting have been "improved". I read somewhere it was gonna be $30. Still too much for what is essentially a remake with some added content. I think it's mostly being targeted toward consolers who have never heard of the Doom franchise. Wait until the Steam holiday sale, it'll probably be down to $9.99.

Ah, now that I check, it appears to be $30 on GMG right now. You're right.

...still too much though. :p I'll definitely wait for a sale. (At least, this is what I usually tell myself)

I'm excited! :D I can't wait to try BFG edition's native VR support with the Oculus Rift. I already have a crappy VR920 VR headset and played normal DOOM3 with hacked in VR support and it's really something else.

I've heard the original Doom3 port to the XBOX was really stripped down. I think this BFG edition is mostly a proper release of Doom3 with extra goodies in anticipation of Doom4. Nice for consoles but not too exciting for PC users (unless you're into VR).

Id broke technological ground and revolutionized 3D gaming, but damn, they've been in need of a decent story writer for two decades. You think they could have hired one by now. It's sad to see this pioneering company fading into irrelevancy.

Doom 3 BFG sounds like trying out, but having already played the original I'll probably wait for it to come down in price. The original was good, but seriously flawed and I'd like to see how they improved it, but without a 3D setup I don't see much point in buying it right away.

I played it at QuakeCon and was very, uh, disappointed - they didn't like my opinion at the booth. I don't understand why they needed to release it without anything really added that mods can't do anyways.

all it took to do widescreen was a 2 second change in the config file. Yes, it should have been possible in a simple in game menu but there was a fix for anybody with the ability to do a quick google search.

I for one loved Doom 3. It forced me through 4 video card upgrades.

I had a geforce 4 ti 4200 to start but it wasn't enough and I was missing out on the effects the card wasn't capable of so I bought a 9600xt. That card allowed me all the visual goodies but wasn't really powerful enough. This lead me to a 9800 pro. That card was powerful enough ..... until I got a higher res monitor. This lead me to my x800 pro. The card was good but I felt like I wanted a little more power, so I picked a 6800 gt that was better suited to D3.

ID's strong suit has always been graphic/game engine design. None of their games have ever had much of a story which was acceptable for games of yesterdecade, not so much today. The exception is Return to Castle Wolfenstein which I thought was fantastic. If anything I'd like to see a remake of that. I haven't played the most recent Wolfenstein release. I'm not even sure ID had much to do with it as it's an Activision product and had alot of co-development from other studios. The demo was decent enough, but it's three years old now.

I loved the original doom 3, but I'm not getting this one. I still have it.

I thought the story was good. It's a short story expanded over the entire game. Nothing complicated.
