Spent countless hours at LAN parties doing Quake 3. Doom 3 on the other hand I didn't even finish.

all it took to do widescreen was a 2 second change in the config file. Yes, it should have been possible in a simple in game menu but there was a fix for anybody with the ability to do a quick google search.

Didn't that just stretch the image?

ID's strong suit has always been graphic/game engine design. None of their games have ever had much of a story which was acceptable for games of yesterdecade, not so much today. The exception is Return to Castle Wolfenstein which I thought was fantastic. If anything I'd like to see a remake of that. I haven't played the most recent Wolfenstein release. I'm not even sure ID had much to do with it as it's an Activision product and had alot of co-development from other studios. The demo was decent enough, but it's three years old now.

RTCW wasn't developed at all by id. Gray Matter did the single player and Nerve did the multiplayer.

The newest one was done by Raven software.

I didn't know that. Maybe that's why it was such a good game :p, at least IMHO.

I am definitely looking forward to doom 3 BFG edition, being a big doom fan. I just hope the new one has mod support like doom 3 and its expansion did, it would suck if they cut that out.

Also, the original doom 3 DID have widescreen support, it was enabled by console/autoexec.

use cvars:
r_mode "-1"
r_customheight " "
r_customwidth " "

I found Q3 to be fun, but lacking a good singleplayer, it wasn't as good as doom or Quake 2 IMO.

Quake 3 sucked??
Thats all that jumped out at me from his whole post......

Quake 3 Arena is one of the best multiplayer shooters ever created!!!

BTW, The Q3 engine is still being used by call of duty to this day. LOL

I've always said "id makes the engines, Raven makes them into games". All the way back to Doom, the best id engined games were made by Raven Software.

The reason i said Quake 3 sucked is that quite frankly, it sucked.

I was an enormous fan of Quake 1, and Quake 2 (to a lesser degree) they both had single player, and good solid multiplayer.

Then comes Quake 3 with it's multiplayer only nonsense... it's overly flashy overly colorful "smash TV" bullshit vibe, and worst of all the MUH-MUH-MUH-MUH-MONSTER KILL voice over stupidity.

It just felt like it was for 8 year olds. Quake 1 was the shit.

heh ya that is strange. I saw on the Bethesda support mention of steam and steam achievements, but still no news from the steam client. Who knows, maybe it will show up tomorrow upon release.

It's now on Steam. Good news if you already have D3 on Steam, you get a $10 discount for the BFG edition ($20 instead of $30).

Based on the videos and a few reviews I've seen, I'm reluctant to get it even at that price. Looks like 2004 Doom3 with very few features added.

ya I noticed that after I already bought it on steam, 20 bucks. Looks better, but the plasma bolts still don't have dynamic lighting :C

I see this being heavily discounted in the not too distant future. 30 greenbacks for an 8 year old game just doesn't seem sustainable with all the newer titles competing for our gaming dollars. Regardless of the improvements and added content.

I'm gonna pass on this one at $20. Based on what I can tell, there's very little graphical upgrade in the BFG version. Doom3 + Sikkmod + Wulfen HD textures look MUCH MUCH better.

Might pick up the BFG version when it's $5-$10 for the Lost Mission levels.

Yeah, I'll probably pick it up for $5-$10. But for $30, or even $20, there is absolutely no reason to buy this.

I grabbed it, having the $20 discounted price helped me decide, but built in widescreen support, support for having it appear on my second monitor (my TV across the room) without having to make that temporarily the primary... and most of all, XBox 360 controller support, were enough for me to justify it.

Getting some achievements out of games that were hugely important to me when I was 13 through 15, is also kinda cool (There are some Doom 1 and Doom 2 steam achievements)

There are some things they clearly should've done beyond what they did, but I'm glad to have it. I always loved Doom 3.

While I did enjoy Doom 3 it paled in comparison to HL2 that came out at the same time. Id = taking some old concept and repackaging it -- and look they're doing it again w/D3 BFG. Valve = actual innovation.

greenmangaming.com currently has a 20% off coupon for PC games on their site so that would save you $6.

If you own D3 on steam you get it for 20. Even then too expensive. You will be better off searching for free Mods. Some of them are really good and offer good graphical improvements.
