RTS online is very mentally straining and stressful. I find that only people with lots of time on their hands or "professionals" will have the means to master it.

I will be getting Starcraft 2 just for the single player, and online Tower defense/other types of games. Similar to how I enjoyed Warcraft 3.

Diablo 3 on the other hand will be solely a multiplayer experience.

This. SC2 is all about the SP campaign for me. Diablo 3 is multiplayer goodness for hours on end with my buddies.

Uhh.. yea. Most of the custom maps are multiplayer. That's pretty much the whole point.

+1 only buying for use map settings multiplayer, won't even touch the actual game with a 10 foot pole. That shit played out ten years ago and Blizzard knows it.

Shh, I know. There is such a thing as co-operative multiplayer and not only competitive.

Ya.

I've played all games except MMO's that way.

On Diablo II, I made almost all my chars online in case I wanted multiplaye, but played it like a single player game.

Even though I've had to referesh them every 90 days for several years or lose them, and lost half (with all the muled loot they had) that way.

Eh, I just stuck to single player Diablo 2. Allows the use of muling programs (ATMA, GoMule), you can run bosses really easily because of no map resets, no need to refresh your characters, and you can still play with friends (just not on closed Bnet).

Also lets you use mods like the runeword mod (enables ladder runewords in SP) and the red rune mod (now obsolete; Blizzard added this feature in the latest patch).

I'm going to be buying it for both. After my initial frustration with the Beta (getting my ass handed to me time and time again), I finally found a little bit of a groove and was able to make my way into the silver league.

MP is definitely tough, especially on people with no SC background, but it is worth it, at least it was to me, to power through a bit and learn why I lost. I was watching some old replays and couldn't believe the stupid things that I was doing when I first played the game.

Unless the custom maps are co-op I can't see how that will change getting railed in multiplayer, except that the custom maps will probably cost you more money. I'm referring to SC2 though.

Usually, custom maps have vastly simplier gameplay mechanics compared to the standard game so you can pick them up much faster.

All of you single player pansies really know how to short change yourselves. Don't give up on the multiplayer because you got stomped in sc 1 or the sc2 beta. Beta players only make up a very small percentage of the online population come retail. After your placement games, you should be matched up against players of equal skill.

In the original I used to play with my friend against the CPU. That was good fun

I will only be playing this game single player, but I'll wait until it drops to $30.

im not playing MP because i get stomped at it, im not playing it because i don't find it enjoyable. i play very few if any games that involve playing against other people in a competitive way. i simply don't enjoy that aspect of gaming anymore.

You know this for a fact? SC 1 has only been out for over a decade and I don't remember it being me vs somebody of my skill level. Ever. I'd actually be short changing myself if I did devote myself to online play. I'm not ruling out MP completely, it's just not going to be my focus by a long shot.

That's what they said about Warcraft 3. It's a lie.

Terrible argument. SC1 didn't have any kind of match making. Only lobbies with no ladder system.

Multiplayer all the way. I will enjoy the single player, but multi is where it is at. I played a ton of beta games and look forward to countless hundreds more over the years.

The game has 6 skill leagues for multiplayer. If you wait a few weeks for things to settle out, Copper level shouldn't be too hard for you. That's the idea anyway.

Platinum (my level... profound sadness that I cannot make Diamond)
Gold
Silver
Bronze
Copper

There's also an option to play your first few multiplayer games in a super noob league (not the real name). Hop in after you beat singleplayer (again, give time for the good players to move into the top leagues) and hopefully you can win some at Copper.

I'm tempted to take Wednesday off just to hang out at home and rock that SP campaign.

Used to play MP SC1 and my friends and I had ridiculous W/L ratios and always had the best time evar. I even went to stay for a while with one of the guys I met... but for some reason MP in SC2 simply doesn't appeal to me. At all.

I'm in it for the single player and cinematics. Gotta love the story of all Blizzard games.

....Starcraft 1 didn't have rankings and match-making that matched you by skill.

Even in the beta, I played against people of about equal skills most of the time (no crushing victories or defeats).

You could always play co-op vs AI, or the HUUUUGE assortment of custom games, like tower defense, base defense, and a billion other things.

I'll buy it and play both SP and MP. I don't have a lot of experience with RTS games against anyone other than my friends, so I expect to get smoked in MP.

I pretty much skipped the first Starcraft dut to an EQ and UT99 addiction, but I'm going to give this one a go.

If I buy it at all, it'd be for the SP campaigns. After the second and third parts of the game are released. Paying 180+ for a single game still doesn't sit well with me. Hard to justify that kind of cost for a single game.
