anyone else a box pack rat?

rudeguy

Lifer
I don't throw away any boxes. I have every box from electronics/computer stuff I have bought. I've even kept the USPS boxes that stuff I bought from FS/FT shipped in.

I don't know why I do this, but I refuse to throw them out.

Am I odd?

I used to be, but I broke myself of the habit.

for expensive items, I'll keep the box around for 2-3 months in case it breaks and I have to RMA it. after that, it gets tossed into the trash.

somewhat. i tend to keep the boxes that stuff is shipped in more than the actual box the product is normally in, but when it starts to get bad i throw them out.

I'm a packrat, but not with boxes. I use the boxes for my paper recycle, and get rid of them immediately. I save some small boxes that look like they might be useful for gifts or shipping, but that's it.

i would if i had the space. i've run out of space, even after flattening them all. i keep them for my computer though.

People that save ALL of an item they come in contact with because they "might need them" annoy me to no end. I know lots of people that save every plastic grocery store bag they get, even though the piles of bags they have accumulated are a clear indicator that they are using them at a far slower rate than they are receiving them.

It IS smart to save some things, but only up to a certain point. Once you have enough that you could fulfill any likely need it's ok to start throwing them away. Remember, if you start to run low you can just start saving them again.

I used to be REALLY bad about this. When I bought my stereo rack system in the early 90's, I kept all the component boxes in the attic of my garage for when we moved...until we bought our house, then they went to the trash. I still have the box for the 50" tv I bought before x-mas, but it's currently full of oak pieces from the entertainment center I cut down to make a tv stand.

I also keep a few smaller boxes for misc. shipping purposes, properly broken down and tucked away.

I did this for awhile too, still do it for things I find that have good resale value. Pictures of proof that you are the owner of a retail product (if applicable) seem to bump up the value.

Still have half life 1 game boxes from the late 90's >> but I lost the cds 🙁.

I toss out everything that has depreciated though during spontaneous cleanups.

my old roommate used to do that with grocery store bags.

I keep one plastic bag hanging on a hook in my kitchen filled with balled up plastic bags. I take them out as needed (mostly to bring lunch to work in) and when the bag is full, I'll start a new bag and take the full bag to get recycled.

I always keep computer retail boxes but that's really about it. I used to save everything including the dunnage but I always felt like a hoarders so I had to force myself to discard everything.

same for me pretty much. my ex threw out a lot of stuff i was packratting... i keep electronics boxes longer for some reason... i still have a lot of junk in totes though, including years and years worth of old gaming / sports / misc magazines. hell... i should see if my playboys are down there somewhere...

yes, I am. I don't know why I am either. Initially it was because we were going to eventually move out of a townhouse and into a house but I still keep every box and I've lived in this house for 9 years now!

hmm. only 2 playboys were found in the magazine tote i searched. but a TON of old photos and cards 0_0

some that needed to be... sequestered away 0_0

I'm one, as is my father. Having grown up as a military brat, then joining myself, I've moved to many places. Keeping the boxes handy helps when preparing for the move. I just hope I break the habit when/if I ever grow roots and buy a house.

Depending on how valuable the purchase is the box is usually kept... after a while when the item has no longer its functional use i usually dump the box.

So I've got a box for my monitor and speakers for example
