I've always wanted to learn to sail as well. I spent a lot of time alone on a sunfish trying to teach myself, but always got stuck on the far side of the lake. Tipped it a few times. Even got the mast stuck in the lake bottom once. I'm sure it was quite the show.
Now I just admire the sailboats. Looking forward to Tallships duluth this year. http://tallshipsduluth.com/ships/

Always keep an eye on the boom.
When the wind turns, it could smack you overboard.

Wouldn't that thing sail faster if it wasn't submerged nearly to the top of the jib? :p

US Coast Guard Auxiliary offers courses. Recommend at least the beginner course for sailing fundamentals.

There may be a sailing club near you, that will offer hands on lessons. I learned to sail on a lake in Mass. Got x number of lessons at this club. After learning the basics, I could take a small sail boat out solo. This is the one I learned at.

The basics of a small boat versus a large boat versus a sailboard, are fundamentally the same. But each requires different skills. Think of the difference between driving a passenger car versus driving a big truck.

sailing is fairly easy to learn. one of my school teachers held a summer camp so i learned how to sail that way. not my thing, but i can certainly see the appeal.

Speaking of sailboats ...

Looking aft down the deck of Gazela Primiero, the largest sailing vessel I have personally helmed, but by no means the largest.

As in Philadelphia's Gazela?

Very cool looking boat but the last time I saw her she looked like a halfway abandoned Camaro restoration on Billy Bob's front lawn. :(

Yes, I know that. Was just sharing that info. so you know how to secure your WP. The WordPress CMS is plagued with vulnerabilities. XMLRPC should be forbidden in htaccess BTW.

She has been getting some work done at a pier south of Penn's Landing, so for awhile a lot of the rig has been off her and she's been covered in plastic. But it's often the case with these old ships (and Gazela is over 120 years old now, if you can believe that - she was 103 when I sailed on her) that there is more will than cash to take care of them.

Sailboats are fun.

Worked the main grinder on a Americas Cup yacht once, is pretty amazing the power you can actually get off a sail, if done right.

We weren't going into the higher end gears on the main grinder at the time, it's pretty highly specialized of course.

The wife was a winch wench att, and just that scared the hell out of her then.

I guess she still qualifies as a pirate for that though :)

Wow, I knew she was old but didn't realize she was that old. I actually thought about volunteering for that effort, but we took a few close passes while we were sailing on the river, and it just didn't look like anything I wanted to get involved with.

Yeah, the 'more will than cash' issue is common in Philly. This thing is still rotting away down by Ikea. http://www.ssusc.org/

I liked it because their used to be a sign on it (not sure if it's still there) that said "Save the United States!" and that always made me laugh.

I read awhile back that a deal was struck to put her back in commission (the United States I mean), but I will believe it when I see it.

And yeah, Gazela was built in Lisbon in 1883... so actually she is over 130 years old. Her longevity can be attributed largely to the fact that she was still fishing cod on the Grand Banks, earning a living, until 1969. That and the 4" thick yellow pine planking.
