Were you born in the 1800s by any chance?

I'm convinced Two handed bowling is the way everyone should go. More revolutions, more power, more strikes. That Aussie guy (Jason Belmonte) is killing it. He has 50+ 300 games and he's like 30 years old.
.

He doesn't really use the left hand to add extra spin though, more for control and a better release. If you watch he removes his left hand just before he releases the ball, but it helps him keep his shoulders square and helps with consistency.

and always hook it!

I bowl straight. When bowling straight you have a small range spot to hit due to the angle the ball is approaching the pins.

I usually bowl aiming for slightly left of the head pin. If all goes to plan I plow through the head pin and glance the 5 pin to the right and takes out the right side nicely. On a good day I can be consistent with enough for turkeys and the occasional badger :D

But im usually not consistent, I seem to have bad muscle memory.

I think bowling is the only sport where it's acceptable for the athletes to smoke and have beer bellies.

My wife and I joined leagues for a few years. Our first tournament we actually won because our handicaps were so high starting out. Neither of us had bowled for 20 years before that. I did actually break 250 once, but for the most part still suck :)

Dunno, saw an ESPN piece about him and they calculated everything, and he was getting 30% more revolutions than standard hook bowlers.

I don't bowl really, however, I got several guys at work who do. One of the guys on my team is in multiple leagues, and he's an older guy, but he's insanely good. Guy averages over 200, and has more bowling related rings than he has fingers on his hands.....

My final year at college has afforded me time to take bowling classes. When I started I was absolute trash, but over the school year I have been steady improving. Today I broke 200 for the first time, with a score of 211 :D

Anyone else in here care about bowling? Do you guys hook it? Bowl straight? Play leagues?

Bowling class in college?

So... how much are you paying to bowl?

I got into bowling the same way as you. Took classes my last semester of college and have been hooked ever since. At one point I actually thought I might have a chance at turning pro, as I had a 221 average for quite awhile. Alas, kids and the need to actually pay bills quashed that opportunity.

Fun game, though. But like golf, bowling gets more frustrating as you get better at it. One little mistake, and there goes your game.

As for "how" I throw the ball, it depends on the shot. I'm a righty, so picking up a single 10 pin spare requires throwing a flat shot or a reverse hook (ball that hooks right for a right hander, left for a left hander). Most of the time, I throw a late breaking normal hook on shot 1.

Once I got fairly good, I used to make games more interesting for myself by trying to do certain things, like shoot for back door strikes, throw different shot shapes, etc.

While I love the game itself, the main problem I have with bowling is that most alleys are hellholes, and they attract a lot of unsavory people.

ya, i used to bowl straight as well. but if i get a nice spin on the ball, and get that hook around...well, i still am bad. hahaha :p
but, when i hook the ball i do consistently better than when i do not.

I grew up bowling and I had a roommate for a while that worked at the Columbus (OH) Bowling Palace... lots of free bowling! After I went into the Army I didn't go into a bowling alley for years...

About 3 years ago I woke up one day and decided I wanted to start bowling again, called my brother and we started bowling every Wednesday night. We joined a summer league and have been bowling league ever since.

To say adjusting to new equipment and lane conditions (after a 20 year pause) had a bit of a learning 'curve' (pun intended...) would be an understatement. I quickly realized my old AMF Dick Weber All-Pro wasn't going to hack it. New shoes, 3 new balls and a lot of practice... my 165 average is now 195.

I usually bowl a 'lazy hook' but, like last night, had to revert to the 'down and in' when the lanes transitioned and my ball wouldn't hook. I'm not a cranker (can't do it with any repeatability) but I do OK with what I have.

The lanes I bowl on are still wood, most everywhere else is synthetic at this point... I don't really care for synthetic lanes.

When I was a little Possessed, I belonged to a church league. I had one game over 200. 20 years later, my board gaming friends wanted to go bowling. I said sure, now I am re-hooked. I go 2 days every week and I am working on consistency on picking up spares over throwing a hell of a strike ball. My recent high is 176, and in a series of games I get a good 150-160 and then cool off real quick down to a 120.

I finally ordered shoes (hard to find a pair of 15 wides, so I had to go with size 16).

My recent low but funny was an 87 with no marks. It means I was off by 3 pins of straight 9's... sometimes I just can't pick up a spare to save my life. Other times I have absolute moments of brilliance (luck!).

I bowl, but really need to get my own ball. I was going to a few months ago but never really got serious about it. G/f and I were going a couple times per week at that point too, I was gettin' good...

We always want to go back but end up touching each other sexually all weekend while playing VGs :p

Our team was 13 points short of first place in our 5 pin league this winter. Dominated all year and collapsed in the final week.
But yes, I'm looked down on by others for being in a bowling league. I don't care!

In my league days, I averaged 211. Use to go bowling for fun in my 20's and would give people 50 pins on the score and still beat them for money. My high game is 267.

inspired by this thread, i took my kids out bowling Saturday night. first time ever for them, and they both had a blast. i did exceptionally horrible. in my defense, its been over 10 years since i went bowling. :p
but it was still a really good time. i think we might just have to make this a weekly kinda thing. :D
