The Japanese love their whale meat. They will get it one way or another. It is a good thing what Sea Sheppards are doing but in the end they don't have the financial backing that the Japan puts behind its whaling fleets. So all they can do is pester the whalers and shake their fists at them. Eventually I wouldn't be surprised if a few whaling ships got torpedoed by some whale rights activist because they can do anything legally to stop them.

Yeah, its too bad these guys are too incompetent to make the show entertaining. Instead of actually seeing them do anything, the entire source of entertainment essentially revolves around their failures...

Nevermind that a number of them are incompetent and have no business out at sea in the first place.

This was confirmed on the show a few weeks ago when they got their (non icebreaker) ship stuck in ice and almost sunk. Mostly due to the first mate being spectacularly incompetent. Well everyone on there is, but he really stands out.

My favorite part was when they sent two guys down to the lowest part of the ship and told them to stop the water if it came in. Of course they had no clue how to do anything. When the cameraman realized this he left and advised the crewmen to do the same.

Paul Watson is eventually going to either sink his ship or get someone killed (or both).

Good thing he decided not to come back, he is a total asshole who thinks he knows it all. Pretty much every person on the ship is glad he is leaving.

Yup launch the little ships, lose site of the target, load the ships back.

The 2nd mate (Pete) was one of my gfs best friends back in high school. She'd heard things about him being on the show here and there, but we only recently saw a few of the episodes. She was pretty shocked and the ridiculousness of it all.

I personally laugh almost the whole way through. Between their "I'd die for the whales" attitude, the 'attacks' on the whaling ships using smelly water balloons, and the ineptitude of the entire ship is priceless. Oh, and in a newer episode the crew was shocked because the whalers figured out an effective defense. They just put up nets on the side and none of the bottles get through. problem solved.

Here in downtown Honolulu we have tons of brainwashed college kids asking for donations for Greenpeace on the sidewalks...even asking people for credit card numbers so they can make a donation (yes, that's what I want, some dope-headed college kid with my credit card info). Anyway, everytime some doe-eyed 19 year old comes up to me asking to help save the whales, I call her a terrorist and walk away...

I've seen it and it angers me. The Japanese whalers are working around an unjust law against their SUSTAINABLE resource. Saying that that they are justified to go after them because whaling is illegal under international laws is circular reasoning. Why are they so passionately against whalers? They "just are?" Great. You like whales. It doesn't mean you can go running your boat into theirs. Not all whales are endangered. Not everyone thinks we shouldn't kill something just because you like them, hence dogs and guinea pigs are eaten as food in other countries.

Steve Irwin wasn't against hunting and I have a feeling that he would NOT approve of them naming the ship after him and then publicly using it for this purpose.

Why? Tell me one good reason why non-endangered whales should be exempt from hunting other than to ensure that the endangered ones aren't? Obviously, it would be harder to regulate with internationally sanctioned whaling legalized, hence, the loopholes that Japan uses.

Anyone else watching this show and rooting for the whalers? Sure, that they're doing is wrong... but I'd still be cheering if they succeeded in sinking some of these insane eco-hippies :)

Every time I start thinking that, they'll show some whale thrashing around with a harpoon in it, being dragged to a ship with "research" painted on the side of it. I dislike being taken for a fool.
"Awwww... cute little fuzzy whales." Fool. Liking an animal is hardly justification for banning their use as game.

They patrol supermarket entrances here in San Diego too (Hi, Jules).

I do not, however, agree with the tactics of the people in the show. Animal Planet is bordering precariously on the border of advocating eco-terrorism.

Any citations for this?

I don't watch/follow the show at all, however I remember catching a few minutes of it when I was at a friend's house playing with her new kittens. IIRC they were following some japanese ships but the japanese ships were in a search pattern/trying to find a missing person? And the guys on the Steve Irwin or w/e were all griping like "rawr they've been searching for 30 hours, they should just give up cause we're about to run out of fuel and we haven't accomplished what we want to do (pester the whalers)". Which is when I flipped the channel because they came off as rather selfish-fvcks.

B/c they knew anyone that went overboard would have died in minutes and that the Japanese fleet as just putting on a show for people back in Japan. That's why.

You didn't specify it was for the news, since this thread has been about the show. Anyways, a missing sailor might make the local news at best, and a better way to put it was that they were putting on a show for his family.

Yes, but I do agree that we (all countries) spend an ungodly amount of time and money for show in such cases. Not that I don't understand why, both from the viewpoints of the remaining sailors and from the family who wants "closure".
