I have a 1900XTX on AMD 64 3200 @ 2.4GHz Winchester with 2GB RAM.

Prey : 1280 X 1024 High ( there is no option for Ultra, why?) 4x AA 8x AF
CCC - High Quality, no HQ AF, Disabled AI

The game is fine when it is smooth but in between it is jerky, quite a lot of jerkiness within every few seconds and there are particular places where it is less jerky or where it isn't jerky.

I tried the game for initial few minutes, just till when I am in the bar.

I am on CAT 6.8. Anybody else noticed this problem. Could it be because of my overclock or something else, I even tried removing the cabinet side but that didn't improve it at all. What could it be?

I made some changes in CCC, now:
All settings maxed out with Texture Quality on High(max option shown)
10X7 no AA no AF : Fine
10X7 4x 16x : Fine, but a little great
12X10 : Fine
12X10 4x AA : not fine
12X10 4x AF : not fine
12X10 4x AA 16x AF : not fine

Can anybody give me the reason for this on this system, the system is not that crap. Had it been a 7800GT or 7600GT I would understand, but not on a 1900XTX!

FPS were 60 throughout and once or so maybe 58.

I can't go beyond 12X10. That is the max my monitor supports.

Anyway, my system shouldn't be that slow that it can't play the game at 12X10 with AA and AF. 10X7 AA and AF is fine, 12X10 without AA and AF is also fine. But why not 12X10 with AA and AF?

BTW you have the same system, winchester @ 2.45 compared to my 2.4, 1900XT overclocked compared to my 1900XTX, 2GB RAM at 3-3-3-8 2T Divider 333, also tried 2.5-3-3-8 1T Divider 333, the latter was equally bad if not worse.

Which drivers do you use and what settings in the drivers do you maintain?

oh I've downgraded my system since then, I played PREY at 1920x1200 with 16xHQAF with no issues though.

What is your ram running at? Ram speed shouldn't be an issue but I never had value ram like that so I wouldn't know.

Did the game run fine on your old setup? To what have you upgraded now?

RAM is value, but that shouldn't change anything as most people have value RAM atleast in India and don't get any hassles. BTW are you talking of max settings?

Is my system capable of running the game at 12X10 4x AA 16x HQ AF MAXed out fully smooth throughout?

Well i don't play prey. But with ur card u should have no problems playing it a 1280x1024.
And i don't have anything close to ur system.
Mine is an Intel pentium D 930,2 x1 GB DDR2-667 RAM,Radeon x1900 xt(@ stock)
I can run doom 3 with 4xQuality Adaptive AA 16x HQ AF at 1280x1024 and still get 50+ frames.
Quake 4 is 4xAA 8AF.
Ur system is capable fo running prey smooth at those settings.Try patching the game to the latest version.

How do you say you are nowhere close to my system with a 1900XT which is basically the same card just 5-10% lower on avg and a dual core which performs about the same as mine atleast when at stock.
On what settings can you run Quake 4 just fine?
Why not 1600X1200?

I even changed to omega 6.7 fast writes on but that didn't help much either.

The thing is the game runs fine with either AA and AF at 10X7 or no AA and AF at 12X10 but I can't have both, it doesn't run if I use 12X10 with AA or AF or both. FPS = 60 throughout.

Patch 1.1 didn't help either, things are even worse or equally bad now!

It's because you only have 1GB of RAM. Get 2GB, and that will stop happening.

It could be your sound card, try lowering sound quality in the game settings and see if that helps.

Let me nip this in the bud...

Older soundblaster cards are well known to have driver issues, especially with the drivers that come with them (on the install cd) and when enabling high quality sound in games. Go to the Soundblaster website and get patched drivers, this should help. If not you just may have to run the game in low quality sound.

but why does the sound create problems only at higher settings?

anyway, i had tried before when sound was at 0/lowest settings I believe, even then the problem persists. There is no quality option other than that.

Why do you ask for help, then question any kind of help people offer? I said it could be your sound card. I say this because I've had problems with your particular sound card and games being choppy in the past. If you want to try it, feel free. But don't ask me a bunch of stupid questions about it until you've at least tried it.

I told you. The sound was kept to bare minimum settings possible earlier when the drivers weren't even installed for my sound blaster 24bit live!
after that the sound was kept low-med settings practically whatever is the min possible for keeping osund but around medium loudness.

Do you have the demo version of PREY? Or the full retail version of PREY?

To answer your question, demo versions of games usually are not optomized as best as they can be, and sometimes do not offer every option the full versions do, such as all resolutions, and features.

If 12x10 is all your monitor can reach, that's no big deal. 12x10 is a pretty nice res to play at.

Ok, I only have the demo version of PREY. I use 12x10 and everything set to maximum. 4xAA and 8xAF in game settings (Not control panel) and my minimum framerate never really goes below 50. Average framerate is usually between 75 and 85. Maximum shoots upt to about 125.

Rig is in sig. Nothing overclocked. 7900GT runs stock at 450/1320.
