Ok, why did you not have proper drivers installed for your sound blaster LIVE 24-bit before you played any games at all? Because that's what you just said. (bolded above).

For your information, after installation of an operating system, the very next thing you do is install every single MOST RECENT drivers for all of your hardware, even if Windows XP installs its own drivers for them. It doesn't matter if "Device Manager" does not show "bangs" (exclamation points) next to devices or not. You need to install ALL drivers FIRST. Then and only then should you even attempt to install any applications or games on your system. You do anything other than what I just said, you are only asking for headaches.

sodchaos is correct. Sometimes sound cards can cause interrupt issues if proper drivers are not installed, or because of driver corruption. This can cause lockups, stuttering, etc.

This is a challenge, if you are able to solve my problem then in my sig at AT you might find anything which you want, even you can't solve the problem.

I know your solution. Go into your bios and set your CPU vcore to 1.9v in and set your vcore for your x1900xt to 1.9v with ATITool also (they should always be the same vcore!). Don't use ATI's drivers because the stink. I suggest you get these: Nvidia 91.47
Don't forget to keep CCC cos you won't be able to change settings otherwise. If you need any more help, ask.

Ok ashkayt. Is this a problem you created just to see if we can solve it? If not, see below:

1. Need make, model, and revision of every component of your PC. Exact details.
2. Need driver versions for every component of your PC. Exact Details.
  • Motherboard
    CPU
    Memory
    Graphics Card
Sound Card (If not built in)
    NIC (if not built in)
    Hard drives
    CD/DVD drives
    Power Supply
Hell, I even wanna know what brand floppy drive you have.

Next:

Operating system and service pack. And whatever windows updates you have done. Details.

Lets start with this. There will be more questions to follow, but this is enough to get started.

And please. Do not tell me to just look at your sig, because that is nowhere near the detailed info I need.

I have installed Dx9 updates, are other updates necessary as well?

Anyway, I will try these. But I am 100% sure that this is not gonna solve it as I get problems with some older games like UT04 as well if I up the settings. Surprisingly a 7600GT with a similar setup gets no problem with UT04 with same or higher settings.

What's your CPU and RAM usage before you enter the game? Are you running stuff in the background?

I ran Prey fine with zero jerkiness on my system; here's the specs so you can compare:

Opteron 165 @ 2.4 GHz (dual core)
2GB DDR (PC3200 2-3-2 1T)
ATI X1900XTX
1680X1050 resolution (Widescreen Gaming Forum solution) with 16X HQ AF (driver forced) and either 0X AA or 2X AA. All settings were on maximum quality.

Try lowering the AA and see if that reduces the stuttering. If you're getting stuttering, it could be:

-running out of RAM. However, if you've got 2GB you should be fine.
-slow hard drive access (is your drive badly fragmented, and how full was it when you installed Prey? Towards the end of the disc or what?)
-video settings. Your settings should be fine but to troubleshoot I'd turn AA off and work my way up from there. Turn off the special AA's in drivers (TAA and I forget the name of the other AA).

Also, perhaps try turning Catalyst AI on (low) and see if that helps performance any.

---------

With Catalyst 6.8 in there I assume you're using Microsoft's .net 2.0 (version 1.1 is slower). Make sure your chipset drivers are up to date.

Perhaps try uninstalling your video drivers, using driver cleaner and then putting the 6.9's in there. I believe 6.9 has some OpenGL performance improvements :) .

Your RAM - what are the settings? Have you underclocked it to account for the overclocking or is it around the 200 MHz it's rated for (sometimes when I overclock I leave the RAM multiplier low and it gives bad performance). Also make sure your HTT frequency multiplier isn't too low (use 3X or 4X).

12X10 without AA and AF is fine, with either is crap.

HDD C:\XP drive of 11GB+, had less than 2GB free, earlier, I uninstalled thing and increased free space to around 5GB before installing Prey.

CCC AI: disabled or standard.

Haven't tried CAT 6.9, are they better than CAT 6.6/6.8, omega 6.7

RAM is at 3-3-3-8 2T Divider 333. HTT 240 X 4x

Should I try at stock if all this can cause so many troubles?

Have you tried removing your sound card and using the on-board sound from your mobo?
I remember a thread where someone was having major headaches with their system, resolved be merely putting the sound card in a different PCI slot. And it was an old Sound Blaster.

Since your problems seem very persistent, I'd say anything is worth a shot.
By the way, what is your 3D Mark 05/06 score?

I had tried previously onboard sound for other games but it didn't help.

My 3D Mark scores with CPU at 2.54-2.57GHz
05 : 10600+
06 : 5000+
with CAT 6.8 or older

I'd try standard Catalyst A.I. and upgrade your video drivers to 6.9s. Not sure what you mean by jerky, but you might consider enabling V-sync in CCC too.
