Anybody know where I can get 90% Hydrogen Peroxide? Its for a rocket enginge...

I know that its a popular fuel for rockets, where would you get it?

they usually sell pre-made motors

probably have to go to a chemical supply

H2O2 is a fairly common disenfectant. Ask at a pharmacy to see what the concentrations are.

A hobby shop isn't going to carry this stuff ... he's talking liquid fuel rocket engines & high-concentration H2O2 is very nasty stuff.

In any case, have a look at this

Well, they sell nitromethane and $6,000 scale model jets at the hobby shop over here, I didn't think liquid fueled rocket supplies were out of the question.

A bit more:

Here is likely the kind of rocket KDOG is contemplating: H2O2 + Silver Catalyst

Drug Store H2O2 is about 3% concentration ... not going to go boom. On the otherside of the coin, you don't use 90% H2O2 to whiten your teeth ... more like remove them.

Here's an interesting FAQ

Hmmm ... I don't know anything about nitromethane, but the MSDS I just googled up doesn't look to good! I'm suprised its available in a hobby shop, especially in CA.

In any case, the really high concentration H2O2 is very nasty stuff. Very corrosive & flammable.

Yup, thats it. Thanks, good link. I wonder how much you'd need to get into orbit?

From the MSDS;

Flash Point: Noncombustible.
Auto ignition Temperature: None

:p

H2O2 is not flammable. That doesen't mean that it can't produce energy, though.

Hydrogen peroxide's chemical formula is H2O2. When it comes into contact with silver, the silver acts as a catalyst. The reaction frees the extra oxygen atom to produce water, and also generates a lot of heat. The heat turns the water into steam, which the engine can eject at a very high speed through a rocket nozzle.

interesting bit from the link above (by ergeorge)

The 90% is sold in 300 lb. double wall alum. drums no charge on the drums for the first fifteen days everyday there after is $ 50.00 per day per drum!

The 90% from 1 to 5 drums at 5.00 per pound X 300 = $ 1500.00 per drum
FOB the FMC plant in Philadelphia or Canada.

Not likely ... the Isp is to low. You'd have to have absurd fuel mass ratio.

in layman's terms, it isn't the right fuel (not enough energy) ?

Some more...
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Can detonate by adiabatic compression. Dry alkali or amine salts are explosive.
CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Shock under heavy confinement. Adiatatic compression. Do not trap between closed valves or use positive displacement pumps to discharge nitromethane.

Yea, your right, it's not flammable, but rather a strong oxidizer which makes it a fire hazard, particularly wrt the high temperatures it can generate while decomposing.

"Flammable Properties
Will not burn, but decomposition, which may be caused by heat or contamination
will release oxygen which will increase the explosive limit range and burning
rate of flammable vapors.

Fire and Explosion Hazards:
Strong oxidizer. Contact with clothing or combustibles may cause fire. Effect
may be delayed. Contact with organic liquids or vapors may cause immediate fire
or explosion, especially if heated. Under certain circumstances, detonation
may be delayed. Oxygen release from hydrogen peroxide may force organic or
hydrogen vapors into an explosive range."

Kind of like pure O2 isn't flammable, but you still don't smoke around it!

I have some 90% in my basement...got it a while back for cleaning purposes from a mail order place or something of the like. Really gotta dilute it though, 'cause that sh!t burns like hell if you're careless. (Master of the Obvious)

Went looking around. You arent going to buy this. You could get 35% and distill it yourself. You do not need 12,000+ dollars. If you are associated with an educational instution you might be able to do what you need there if you are qualified or know some lab techs.

BTW Bridgeton? Carls Corner! Used to summer in a little town called Harrisonville, not too far from you. Grandfather had a peach orchard.

Anyway. RE nitromethane. I have some of that stuff mixed with fuel for a model airplane engine. The "nitro" prefix does not mean it is going to blow up. Easier to keep than gasoline BTW. Pure nitromethane you will not find on the hobby store shelves. Well, unlikely. Usually it is mixed with fuels by percentage. Keeping high concentrations of H2O2 around is like keeping sulfuric or nitric acid in high concentration on the shelf.

Yeah, I'm in Hopewell Twsp., out by Atkinsons Dairy Farm. You still around here?
