I *LOVE* Indian food... we have a great little restaurant in my hometown. Just a couple of days ago I had some Lamb Vindaloo. I ordered it hot and the chef wasn't kidding when he said it was spicy! :Q

(although i'd have to say my fav dish is Chicken Tikka... mmmm....)

Describe Chicken Tikka if you wouldn't mind.

funny thing is bombay isn't even north Indian but so many north indian restaurants have that city in their name.

I think it's because Americans associate Bombay with India ... although isn't Bombay now known as Mumbai?

Yeah, it was always known as Mumbai actually, just the Britishers had a hard time saying it and they ruled, so the western worlds maps were named accordingly.

AZdevil: i can think of quite a few restaurants where i'm sure you wouldn't have the runs doood. You should prolly also take someone who knows their stuff when it comes to da food to navigate you thru the menu. Indian food is pretty safe actually. Even though Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom screwed it up for Indian restaurants the world over (snakes, and monkey brain.. LOL!!), Indian food doesn't have anything out of the ordinary. I think the only thing that Americans dont' eat that is in Indian food besides curry which is just spices is Goat meat. chinese eat a lot of horse meat. They eat dogs, as do the philipinos and i know Vietnamese eat cats. I like all of their food, but started eating at those places by taking some friends in da know with me. Now, i can go myself and order and know whats safe and not.

It's boneless chicken pieces that are marinated and cooked over a grill (I think? not sure about the grill part)...it's my favorite dish too!

Altho I'm into a south indian dish called 'kotthu roti'..its really nice. comes in chicken, goat, or vegetables.

N8Magic: what good indian restaruants do you know of? <since we are both in the same relative area..Toronto>

Chicken Tikka, I believe just means Cut up chunks of Chicken. they usually cut it in to square chunks, Then you can have it in Kabob style, skewered, or you can put it in a gravy sauce. maybe there are other ways of preparing the chicken chunks.

some Punjabi dishes i would reccomend you guys try:

Palak Paneer (spinach with cheese chunks in creamy sauce, sounds odd but GOOD)
Chicken Tikka - u already know this
Tandoori Chicken (BBQ Chicken)
Goat meat (watch for bones) (a.k.a. bhakri)
Cholay (chickpeas)
Sheek Kabab - ground up assorted meats put on skewer.
Daal makni (lentils in butter sauce)
Chicken Makni (chicken chunks in butter sauce)

Eat the above with Naan, the light, fluffy bread made in a Tandoor. You can also eat them with Kulcha, Kulcha is a naan with onion bits and other vegetable bits. Its really good too.

Also, try Rumali roti. its very thin, but good. They make it in a upside down pan.

For dessert, ask for Kheer (rice pudding - i prefer without raisins, some restaurants put raisins tho. should be COLD)
Kulfi-Indian ice cream, frozen with pistachio bits
Gulab Jaman - round, dough balls cooked and soaked in syrup. Should be Warm
Jalebi-round shaped fried dough with orange color added. its crispy, and sweet. should be Warm-hot.

I think the desserts are common for both North and south indian food but i'm not sure.

For south Indian food: i reccomend:

masala dosa - boiled veggies and potato in crepes
idli with sambhar
udapum
yogurt rice
lemon rice

take with coconut or mango chutney.

if there are any other south indian dishes i should try let me know. i usually just order the above tho to be safe =).

damnit i'm hungry now

The only one I ever go to is in Kitchener, and it's called Vijay's. It gets rave reviews from the local paper, and although the decor is a little dated, you can't beat the food!

*edit* do you know of any good Indian restaurants in downtown Toronto?

To tell you the truth, I don't really enjoy eating Indian food out in restaurants here in Canada. They never make it right. I get much tastier and more authentic food at home or at friend's/families' houses. But then I don't think our food in its natural form would cater to most Canadians/Americans. So restaurants tame it down for the general public.

Would you care to ship me some same-day Purolator Express? :p

Actually, I wish there were more authentic Indian restaurants around. I work with a few Indian guys, and I always snag some of their food... they're impressed that a white dude like myself enjoys the spicy ethnic dishes. :)

Mad: what type of restaurants are you referring to?

I find many restaurants to be very good in the States, and I can compare it to Punjabi home cooking. Its pretty authentic, the only gripe i have is they put a lot more oil and cream in the dishes to make them tastier, and it also makes it heavy. I dont understand how the food is different from home cooking other than that, presuming you are either Punjabi or South Indian, as those are the most common Indian restaurants in the West. My mom is a really good cook, and so does make some of the dishes i like, but Indian food takes so damn long to make, and we don't have access to a Tandoor, so eating out allows me to enjoy the aunthentic Punjabi dishes i can't have at home, like Naan (you can make it in the oven, but it ain't as authentic as in a tandoor), kulcha, kababs, tandoori chicken, etc. Maybe you just haven't been to the the right places??

Avoid eating North Indian dishes (anything with goat, lamb, chicken, spinach and cheese or cholay, paranthas, etc.) at restaurants owned by or cooked by South Indians. They can't make it right. I've tried 3 or 4 different places in different states where the cook was South Indian and all the Punjabi dishes came out horrible.

Bastage I am from Andhra Pradesh (south Indian) and I like my food the way it is :)

I hope you do. I like south Indian food too. But its all too common these days where you see South Indian chefs preparing Punjabi food and thats where things REALLY head south. I've tried it at several south Indian places and its just horrible the way they make it. They're better than anyone else at making dosas and other south indian dishes tho.

Indian food has never given me the runs.

Only White Castle burgers and Taco Bell does that, it's like a 2-for-1 deal.
