<< Wow, lots of suggestions... and did this thread ever grow! >>

Just goes to show that Dallas is THE city, and plenty of people have lots of stuff to say about it. :)

wait, how is dallas "the" city, mrcraphead? i have things to say about it, but sheesh, dallas is the worst place you could live. I don't know why so many people live there. I would never live there, nor do i like living in austin. I'm outta here as soon as high school is over. To dammed hot.

Oh, another thing, if you by chance, come down to austin, go look up some food review in the NY Times. My uncle comes down here to austin every couple of years and reviews all the good BBQ places. If you come down here, look up one of his articles. look under the name Sietsema.

True, perhaps it's not THE city, and the weather is horrible, but I grew up there, and all my friends there. Too many memories......:)

I do want to live in NY or somewhere up in the NE though. Somewhere where it's bloomin' cold and you'll freeze your bum off if you're not careful. :)

wow, that's surprising. I always thought all Texans wanted to live and die in Texas... and thought they all despised New York! There goes my stereotyping again, guess i should have learned to never do that.

hahaha, MOST of the poeple in TX are NOT die hard cowboys. :)

My friend who's lived in TX for the majority of his life, moved to San Jose for his JR and SR year in HS. Everyoen at his school thought people in TX rode around on horses, wear cowboy hats, and had farms with animals.

Talk about being close minded........*sigh* :disgust:

I just graduated from SMU (all you Jesuit peepz, I went to ESD :)) and can't wait to get out of Dallas. It's a great city but after 10+ yrs here, I definitely need a change. Plus me and a friend just got a 3 bedroom beach house in Santa Cruz near San Jose :) Can't wait to get out of this blistering heat and just chill out on the beach!

Urinal Mint:

Daddy Jacks specializes in lobster, king crab legs, salmon, tilapa and other seafood plates. One of my favorites is the Pico-de-Gallo Tuna. They also have a mahi-mahi with crab sauce. It too is wonderful. Besides seafood, they serve some pasta dishes and beef filets for the meat eaters. I believe their desserts are from the people at Sweet Endings in Deep Ellum, a wonderful dessert bakery. The prices for the dinners on their menu range from $14-$50, with most of them falling below $18. Be sure to make reservations if you go. I think people can walk-in, but the place is always crowded. And it's a little tiny place too, but rather cosy.

Cepak:

I'm not too familiar with the computer parts dealers in the area. I order nearly all of my stuff online. I too can't tolerate Fry's. The site and, even worse, the sound of that place make me ill. There is a place called American Computer Wholesale that I like. I haven't bought too much from them, but I have picked up a few cases from that place. I remember getting Enlight-7237s from them with 250w power supplies for around $36. That was nearly a year ago so I don't know what they're like now.

In Southern California, there's literally 100's of places to go eat Pho... my friend and i are working on a website and 'rating' the ones around our area

so therefore, with my post, i add absolutely nothing to keep on track to the Topic :D. Wait.. here's something.. my brother moved to Dallas!

I don't understand why people dislike the 110 degree heat in August. Really, it's not that bad.

I had the chance to take a job in San Jose last December, and turned it down for the following reasons: rent on a 1 bedroom apt in San Jose is $2200/mo, in Dallas it's $650. San Jose has electricity problems, Dallas doesn't. California has a state income tax AND a sales tax, Dallas only has the sales tax. Food is cheaper, gas is cheaper, and everything else is cheaper. Frankly, I'm not making near as much dollar-wise here as I would have in San Jose, but then again, I get to keep a lot more money here than I would have in Cali.

Just some food for thought (no pun intended).

And you sure as hell can't beat the women in Texas. :D

I agree with Urinal Mint. Once you get used to the heat it isn't so bad. Besides, there are only two months of the year that are really hot. The rest of the year is pretty nice, especially since we typically have only 2 weeks of winter a year. Our seasons typically go like this: 2 weeks of Winter, 4 months of Spring, 3 months of Summer, 4 1/2 months of fall. And as far as cost of living goes, Ft. Worth is about 20% less than Dallas. We bought our home new, it is not a large house, 1500 sqft, and we pay $720 a month house payment. That includes property taxes and insurance. I've lived here for almost 39 years, done a lot of traveling, and I can honestly say I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Allow me to revive that stereotype, TEXAS RULES!!! :D

7th Generation TEXAN here baby!

Seriously though, I never figured out how lucky we are living in Texas until I lived in other places like Chicago, Denver, Seattle, and LA.

Texas cities are unique in many ways. Example. Chicago housing is extremely old and cramped. People live in small vertical thin houses with multiple levels but the houses are not very big.

Texas houses are spread out and wide which I prefer.

The restaurant scene is far greater than any place I have ever seen.

The road system is better than say Chicago because oyou are not fighting 200 year old road paths that dont allow for the kind of traffic we are used to.

And I really believe the attitude in sunny states is far better than states where its cloudy. To put my psychotherpy hat for a second, I find people who live in sunnier states are generally more happy than those who are say in the north where its cold and cloudy.

I know its gets hotter than hell here in the summer but I believe most people prefer extreme heat than extreme cold.

And the service in and around Texas is FAR FAR FAR better than most places.

For example, I just went on an Alaskan cruise. GREAT cruise however the service in the dining room was extremely lackluster especially in the drink department. On a boat your stuck with tea unless you want to pay more. Thats ok I like tea. Apparently too much though because it took FOREVER to get a second glass. In Dallas leaving a glass empty is a big no no. I know, I was a waiter for 3 different restaurants down here and it was #1 priority. And I think its a cultural difference more than a problem. Same in other cities too. Different places emphasize different customs and decor. I'm happy where I am. I grew up here and I'm used to the mentality and I prefer it. That may play more of a role than anything else.

Just talking about the Texas heat is making me sweat. Today it's about 85f where i live, and everybody is already talking about how hot it is and people should stay in door... went to the mall today, and every salesperson was telling me how hot the weather was. I checked the weather channel this morning, and it was 85f at 5:30am in Texas! Anyways, i'm leaving my jeans behind... just gonna wear khakis and t-shirts all week. Thank god for airconditioning.

The heat is pretty bad here, but I have been here all my life. I'm used to it. It gets much worse with the addition of more extreme humidity the further south you travel, primarily around Houston. I'll be in Houston Monday, and I'm severely dreading the humidity.
