Yea seriously just go to Home Depot. I've hired day laborers to clean a whole bunch of crap from my back yard. I gave them some water and paid them and that was that. Oh and here in Socal, if they get injured, you just tell them La Migra is coming and they won't say anything. They'll just scatter.

What did you pay at the time?

Every job is different. I didn't pay them that much cus they didn't do that much work. It all depends on how much you want to pay them. Taking down a sunroom doesn't seem like it's that much work but it seems like there may be a larger risk of injury with all the sharp pieces that would come from dismantling it.

I agree! with the economy being so slow you can get some excellent work
done at bargain prices. I've had a new kichen floor installed, the kitchen painted, new switch plates for the lights, new shades cut and installed, 3 air conditioners brought from the store and properly installed.

my honey do list is much smaller now and there wasn't a single curse word uttered:)

Illegals jump for 50 / day

Dude, just call up some old friends/acquaintances to help you out. Pay them in BBQ and beer. This is how we do things every hurricane season down here. It works well, its cheaper, you get quality work, and you are helping out fellow citizens...

Only people I know here are my brother in laws and after a hour they are usually to drunk to really work and/or just want to argue with me about how to do it the whole time.

I am still going to get them to help me haul the junk to the land fill.

For that I'd get a dumpster delivered and haul away. 3 helpers and you'd be done in two full days. One or two on hauling/dumping and you and the other on demolition.

No have to tear this down to add on.

The add. will be about the same width of the house and longer then the current sunroom. It will have the kitchen and another bedroom with a full bath.

We live near the landfill, maybe a 15minute drive on the highway. So will just load the truck up and use my neighbors small trailer and haul away. Much cheaper.

With that being tied into the main house and roof, are you sure you want to hire a bunch of day laborers who probably don't know shit about construction? The potential damage could cost you more than you'd pay to have a contractor do the demolition.

Are you going to do the building of the addition or have it done by a contractor?

I'd bet that you could get free labor with a craigslist ad: "Free material for sunroom (pictures) - if you assist me in removing this sunroom, you can have any or all of the material that's removed.

Before you take those bricks to the dump, be aware that you can easily sell them on craigslist - target people looking to make a brick path in their garden. The windows can easily be resold as well.

Also, I'd bet that a crew of 3 could take it down in a day. Then again, you're below the Mason Dixon line, so maybe a week is reasonable.

Be careful when hiring day laborers to do this kind of work. If they get hurt on your property, YOU are responsible for any medical costs. loss of wages, and you can be sued for big bux...
Find a contractor to do it...or do it yourself with some friends.

Can you draw up some kind of contract to dodge that bullet?

Yes you can.
You get them to sign a paper that they are an independent contractor and not an employee.

Good luck with that. You're still liable if the "independent contractor" doesn't carry workman's compensation insurance.
That's one of the first things I ask for when I hire a contractor to do work for me.
1) State Contractor license
2) Business license
3) Worker's Compensation Insurance.

This advice came from my insurance agent.

COVER YOUR ASS!
I have to agree with BoomerD.

Do the work yourself or get a contractor so that you don't have to worry about insurance.

depending on where you live, you can just hire some illegals to do the work. the best thing is, offer to pay them after dropping them off at the end of the day, but instead drive by INS and they'll just book it. free labour!

Its only tied in one place and maybe a couple nails in others. It is not well built and I am already pulling up a couple sheets of the plywood to make it so the rest will come off easy. i will also be there while this is going on. My wife wanted to have people doing this now while i am at work.

I am going to disconnect the power from the sun room today or tomorrow.

Also i am going to try and give away the windows and as much else as I can. That way I have to pay less at the landfill. I think is is $60 a ton right now.

In Texas, we'd pay about $5/hr which included meals. I guess it all depends on where you live.

Or you could borrow my nano suit (I got it from Nomad in Crysis). Go into superstrength mode and just punch it. I bet it'll be done in like 2-3 minutes :D

A week? Maybe if you want it dismantled meticulously so that it could be assembled again. A couple of people with some sledge hammers, prybars, and sawsalls should be able to take that down in a weekend max.

Demo is the best constuction job there is!

A week includes me removing the wiring, moving stuff out of it, etc... So the tear down all but the bricks will be done in a day if I have my way. right now we are moving stuff out and I am doing little things.

Minor Update:

Well went to the 7-11 here in Springfield VA (off of backlick across from McDonalds for the N.VA people)
Just walked up to a bunch of guys and said $60 for the day to tear stuff up, do demo work. 1 guy tranlated and a couple hands went up but then all hell broke loose. I had 5 guiys try to get in my truck and people across the street ran over. I was ok 5 is fine but the 5th guy could not get in the cab and the others guys gave up. So 4 guys back to my place.

We had the entire thing down to the brick very quickly. Ate some chicken and gave them plenty of drinks (powerade, water, tea, etc...) then back to work. Got the brick down and made 1 run to the landfill. On the way back got a flat tire. Got that changed and got home and the trailer got a flat in my driveway.

So got lucky and plugged both and that was fixed. Loaded the trailor up and took them back to the 7-11. This was about 2pm maybe a little after. Gave each guy $60 and then gave the head guy another $20 and told him to split it between them all. They were happy (not much work lately so probable happy for anything) and then asked if I needed them tomorrow. But declined as I have my brother inlaws coming to load the old stuff in my truck and will just haul it.

So made a hugh mess, got 2 flats, ate some chicken, and the sunroom is no more. I will update a little later with a picture of the mess now.
