hey Croton, do you have AT&T as your cell provider? i definitely want that new nokia 8xxx phone and i'm not all that keen on renewing my service with PacBell. the plus side is that the nokia will only run me $50 if i sign up for another yearlong contract with PacHell. but i'd be more than willing to shell out more $ for the phone with AT&T if it meant getting better rates/service through them.

any thoughts, you AT&T cell subscribers?

i have AT&T. I've been w/them since they were LA Cellular (3 years ago).

I have been rather pleased w/their service. coveragewise, i think AT&T is the best because of the national coverage. i tend to have a strong signal wherever i go.

as for the plans, they are great right now. for $29.99, you can get 250 daytime minutes (M-F 7am-8pm, i think), and 500 night/weekday minutes (M-F 8pm-7am, all day Sat & Sun, and some holidays). You get free voicemail, call waiting, call forwarding....etc etc....and you can call anywhere in CA w/o long distance charge. you can roam in parts of nevada & arizona (tahoe & vegas!). the network that AT&T is on is better as well.

w/the at&t phone, u get dual band -- digital and analog. w/this u get coverage in more places. w/pac bell pcs, you only get digital.

i sound like a salesman.

ah! Motorola 3688 and 8088 (the V) are flimsy and quite fragile in a some parts.
and nothing beat Nokia ease of use! and WAP phone is still not that widely used in America nor asia (china, hong kong at least).

Croton, you've sold me. At first I wasn't gonna go with AT&T because they didn't have that Ericsson T28 model I wanted. But after falling in love with that Nokia, I don't think I have any reason to stick with PacHell. Oct.20th I'll be at the local AT&T store signing up for a new plan. :)

kru:
What area are you mainly using pacbell? I am hearing that pacbell/at&t service really varies depending on your area in southern california...

it's not really an issue of poor service.

actually here are my criteria for choosing a new provider:

1. they have that nokia 8xxx phone (not the matrix one but the tiny ass one with no antenna and no sliding parts)
2. they have off peak minutes. not weekend minutes, but after 8pm sorta things

PacBell used to have that and I've never forgiven them for taking that option off their plans. My friend up in the Bay Area has PacBell as a provider and she gets off peak minutes in addition to weekend and anytime minutes. At this point I'm shelling out way more money than it's worth to even have a cell phone. I make an effort to stay within the minutes alloted to me by my plan but it always seems I'm paying a ridiculously high amount when the statement comes.

Anyway, AT&T's plans sound so much more reasonable and if I save $100 a month on their plans, then I don't mind having to pay more for the Nokia phone.

cool man :)

i should call up at&T get a commision or something. ahahhaa

yeah, i live in orange county and i go to school at UCLA, and the coverage has been really good. what i also love is that the customer service is excellent as well -- they really do their best to help you out and keep you happy.

IMHO, nokia has the best phones out there. they are simple to use, can stand a beating, and have great features. if you take the startac, the options are pretty difficult to use, and the interface isn't as good. plus it's an outdated phone. the nokia 8260 is a brand new phone, it is priced very well, and it is so simple to use. plus it just looks damn cool. :)

and the calling plans nowadays just kick butt.

Croton: i'm an LMU alum (and hopefully a returning grad student in the spring) and i live in Culver City.

? (=Þ): i know a store in Monterey Park that offers the Nokia phone for $50 if you sign up for a 1 year contract with PacBell.

actually i think i missed that post...

personally i love LMU. graduated from there in '98 and went straight back in that summer as an MBA student.

i wouldn't worry about getting in with those numbers...after all i had a 2.3 cumulative high school GPA (with six weighted classes) and a SAT score of 1400. which really told any of the schools i applied to that was a lazy S.O.B. :)

your scores show that you're a more consistent individual. good luck with the transfer! :D
