How is the battery life, reception, and generally quality of the phone? Is it fragile? any quirks or issues? And..... if you live in southern california, how is your provider? THANKS

Reception sucks. SOmeone at the office has one and he can only get a signal in the aprking lot while everyone with a 6xxx series is just fine. I thought it was just the insulation but someone at a cellular store showed me the difference. He put a 8xxx next to a 6xxx and the 8xxx couldn't get a signal. I went with th 6162.

Is that in southern california? 8290 or 8260? because the no signal could be partly the fault of the provider too.... a comparing reception on a 6190 and a 8260 isnt valid cuz the xx90 = pacbell and xx60 = at&t.

Both of them were for AT&T Wireless and they have one of the best coverage areas here in Eastern Massachusetts. AT&T Wireless is the offical company cell providor for everyone in the office so all phones use AT&T.

hmm... I still want to know which provider is better for southern california. is AT&T's tri-band service better than Pacbell's single band GSM service? And.... i need more opinions on that phone! I want it... but idunno, it looks like the small battery has less life than a 61xx and worse reception (due to internal antenna)... but im hoping its better.

Reception for new Cell phones nowadays are about the same, the 61XX series and the 82XX should be about the same, at least for the case in HongKong. slightly better receptions is the Ericsson t28s (the slim one with a flip out cover and a relatively big ass antenna)

my few problems with 82XX are
1) too damn lite, never knew I am carrying and easily lose it (like sling it out of my hand when waving at someone, [extreme case nevertheless]
2) Buttons are too small and hard to press

cool design, though.
you can find alot of alternative "case"/"skin" color, you may find also some in asian town if you don't want to buy Nokia's original ones.

Hmm... is it very fragile then? I need it to be able to survive a few moderate drops.

i got a 8210 (GSM 900/1800 dual band) since i am not in the states

the reception is actually rather good

but one thing

i can actaully 'feel' it is emitting a fair amount of radiation compared to my Motorola StarTac

i used to talk on the startac for 1hr + and feel nth

but talking on the 8210 for 15minute+ i feel uneasy

i am getting the phone tomororw from at&t directly

i got mine for $15.00.

If you want to know, go ahead and shoot me an email @ croton@ucla.edu

and yes, i got it LEGIT. it's from AT&T themselves.

as far as i konw, the phone is VERY light and easily forgettable. the buttons are pretty difficult to press if you have large fingers (like me).

but it is a nice phone and has cool features.

i would go w/at&t because it has dual band, as opposed to pac bell. and coveragewise, at&T on SOCAL is WAY better than pacbell.

plus the at&t plans nowadays kick butt.

shoot me an email if you have more questions. i'll try and find out more for you.

i'm getting my phone in the mail tomororw, so i'll tell you more as i get it up and running.

Well. reading what other people have said. I'll comment on this. Its because i have a 8890. Its very similar to the 8290. You have to treat the 8290 very deliate or it can break. I used to treat my 6190 like garbage, but can't do that now to my 8890. Recpetion on my 8890 kinda sucks in doors, like in stores. I would have full reception, and my mic wouldn't work. I don't know if my cell phone is broken or my serivce sucks. From the looks of the 8290. My sister was planning to get one, because she wants to upgrade from her 5190, and she LOVES my 8890.

As for the 8260. How did you get it that cheap? I'll shoot you an e-mail.

Hope that helped.

hahaaaha, my Bruin cousin also have that deal, mad connectionz whatsoever,

its 15 bucks for the phone, but you gotta sign contract with the Service Provider for a 1 year of more.
Your rates will be certainly higher. You can void the contract but have to pay a penalty.

in Hongkong, some phones are "free," desposit 200 bucks or so and the Service Provider and will refund it month by month (in other terms, locking you down in a fixed contract.)

anyway, things maybe different here.

[corrected]Ericsson T28s is cool... and I really want the old Matrix phone.. 8110... (with the pop up lit though)

How did you get the 8260 for only $15? Are you in southern california?

And..... again... I need to pick between AT&T and PAcbell in southern california, primarily for use in LA city and the surrounding area's (San Fernando Valley, san gabriel valley, etc.).
Anybody use AT&T or pacbell in southern cali?

get at&T -- better coverage and they have digital/analog coverage as well.

i've had the 8260 for a few days, and i have to say....it's a great phone...
but it seems like a little toy when you talk into it. reception is pretty good, and it is certainly an attention grabber..
