Never heard of them either...but I'll definitely try to find them locally. Do you use the rennet tablets or one of the ice cream mix tablets?

Besides the ingredients, the key is to salt the ice like no tomorrow. I dump some ice, ton of salt, dump more ice, more salt, etc...once I've stirred it up, leave it alone so the ice can melt and touch the churn. All in, 1 hr.

yeah, I switched to Splenda as my primary sweetener almost 20 years ago. Between being fat as fuck...having high blood pressure...and my A1C bumping up to a range that makes my doctor raise his eyebrows at me...I've cut out almost all "real" sugar.

All this talk about peaches. I had a couple dwarf peach trees in the back yard a few decades ago but they died, one by one. Used to can them, which worked out great.
Recently, rarely buy peaches in the market, just stick to my usual: Bananas, apples, oranges.
After carpal tunnel surgery 3 weeks ago, stopped riding bike (can't), so walked to get my stitches out. On way home, pass a dwarf peach tree on a street I've probably never been on. Notice the poor tree has advanced peach leaf curl. Also, many tiny peaches on the sidewalk, mostly look awful but pick up one that had only a little bruise and held it the rest of the way home in my good hand. Washed and ate it first thing when home. Started thinking. What if I plant the pit, will I have another dwarf peach tree in the back yard. I bury it in potting soil in a small plastic pot and do some research and realize I have to do more. Need to wash the pit, let it dry several days, carefully crack open the pit and remove the interior almond-like seed. Then germinate it, then plant it. There's stuff online. It's ready to crack now. There's a fair chance it won't be much of a producing tree if I do this. I don't know if it will be a dwarf even. Would probably get best results planting something else and grafting.
The pit is tiny, about the size of one of those largish marbles.

the fern canyon + coastal trail at prairie creek is still my all-time favorite hike! i went like 15 miles that day which was about double my previous high.

I like to think I've hiked almost every mile of the Prairie Creek system and you are right, it's an all time favorite. If you are ever out that way again, PM me, and I'll give you tons of recommendations.
I strung together an unpublished loop of Ossagon, Coastal, West Ridge, ZigZag2, and then 2.2 miles on the Pkwy to loop it this trip as well.
On the Coastal while bushwhacking through bush we had a bull Elk raise its head and nod a few times as a we spooked it.
Had a black bear run across coastal 101 right in front of us as well. I think the animals were none to pleased with the hot weather, I know I missed the coastal fog, made hiking a sweaty ordeal!

We spent two weeks with our RV parked in Crescent City. We explored as much as we could by car...(neither of us can really hike nowadays) took that poor rental car into some places that I shouldn't have...my grandsons were
astounded at the giant redwoods...even though just a few years before, we took them up to see the giant sequoias in Sequoia Kings Canyon National Parks. Saw a shit ton of deer, a couple of herds of elk...a couple of black bears...and the giant banana slugs. I think those were the biggest surprises to them. Living in central California, they've seen plenty of slugs...about 3-4" long. The 12" or longer, bright yellow banana slugs were impressive.

Glad the Grandkids got to experience the area and the wild-life! Maybe one day they will enroll in UC Santa Cruz and be a Slug.

I miss NorCal. Used to go to school in Chico, but had friends in Arcata I'd visit pretty often. Now that I'm back in the valley, the furthest north I go is Sac. We do most of our camping in the Sierras or mid coast ie Pismo Beach. We do get to go to Yosemite as often as we like since we're only 1.5 hours away.
Back OT, we still had people launching fireworks last night! We thought surely it'd be over after Sat. night, but nope.
