When I got my original DVD I thought it was a great idea, now I wish I would have waited (not surprising). $25 at Wal-Mart for the 4 disc set......must resist the urge.
added scenes in ttt are great, as in tfotr it adds a lot to the atmosphre and adds scenes that explain things more in depth and add details that were missed by the theater-versions.

I got mine ~10:30 this morning from the friendly UPS delivery person. 
Already watched it....it's excellent. And the Gollum statue is pretty nice.

How many extra hours of scenes are there? Seems like I remember hearing the last one was 4 hours long..
I can't say specifically but there was a good bit more. Scenes and a couple of characters are given more depth.
Nobody has answered the really important question: Is there a ticket to the 3rd movie included? Like the previous EE DVD?

So this was my day...
9AM: Buy TTT Giftset (awesome BTW...though it took me like 10 minutes to get Gollum out without cutting anything).
9:15AM: start watching TTT:EE
1PM: Finish TTT EE, go outside for a quick breather
1:15PM: Pop in Disc 3
5PM: Finish exploring/watching disc 3, pop in disc 4.
7PM: time to take a break about halfway through disc 4.
As with last year's DVD, this set is truly stunning.
The new scenes added add even more to the movie than the FOTR EE did which I never expected. This literally is a new movie in the sense that some of the characters like Eowyn and Faramir are completely different and fully realized. Gollum's character is also vastly improved upon - wow. There was so much new stuff to take in that I'm having trouble recalling it all.
The new ending, while anti-climactic still works very well I think. Legolas and Gimli's resolve to their kill competition is hilarious and very well done. So is Merry and Pippin's little pipe weed fiasco. The shot of all the Ents gathered around Orthanc was great too.
As many have said, one of the best (if not the best) additions was the Boromir/Faramir/Denethor flashback. This is a great addition to Faramir's character and I actually felt sorry for him. Denethor was SO WELL DONE...my friend actually called him an asshole during that scene. After seeing that, and sort of seeing Faramir's reasons for being tempted and saying "chance for me to show my quality", I think he is a much more interesting character than in the book. Though in the theatrical version things were a little unsatisfying. The scenes with Farmir and Gollum outside the sewers were also among the best of the additions. David Wenham is GREAT!
The special features are top notch as always...awesomly done. Cool to see some more realistic stuff this year like arguments and people losing their cool. This is stuff that happens far more than the average person realizes since most documentaries are so glossed over.
Again, it's the best DVD of the year.
Oh, and the video quality is improved as well. I'm going to to a A/B screenshot comparison soon to see how much better it is. The DTS track is amazing too. Much punchier than the Dolby, and the bass isn't as overcooked as before.

At shortly after 8 I put in disk3 just for a quick glance... after all how much movie making can they still talk about and hold my interest after I've seen disk 3 and 4 from the FOTR Extended edition.... right... now the evening is gone and I got nothing done that admire the incredible commitment by so many different people and talents coming together for such an epic! (That is what I think is missing from the new Starwars Episodes... )

I thought it was excellent. The character development was much better in the extended edition. I really don't think I could say anything that Kami hasn't. It's worth it.
Man that was a marathon (just finished watching the revamped movie)... pretty much agree with kami that it makes the two towers a much better movie. My one bad thing to say about it is they still didnt properly explain about how the elvish archers showed up at helms deep. That wasnt enough to knock it off an A+ rating.

I thought it was implied that Galadriel convinced Elron to send help during the cutback to Rivendell.
I agree that the extended version is excellent. I wasnt pleased with the theatrical cut, it felt very empty and poorly developed. The added 43 minutes of footage really are needed to make this movie work. Ill never watch the theatrical cut again.
My wife bought it for me at walmart for $22.93!!! They were competing with Shopko which had it on ad for $22.99. She hid it from me and said it is for chistmas! I want to see it before #3 comes out!!!!! She just doesn't understand that I "NEED" to watch it! Does it have a free ticket inside? If it does, maybe I can get her to let me open it and then I will have to "test" it out!
Well it was "implied" in the theatrical cut.... I was hoping for a actual meeting scene or something so we wouldnt have to guess. Everything else seemed much better explained except that. Its been a while since I read the books but I thought I remember Elrond actually going to galadriel and meeting with her to send the archers.... I could be wrong though.
