Damn this game is hard.

I got started pretty ok, but then I ran into one of those missions where you have to take out a bunch of aliens, and ran into a few plectoids or whatever they're called.
I figured they'd be an easy match, since they kind looked like slow ass melee fighters, but damn, they kicked my ass, before I got a shot off, they started hurling those booger like rockets at my squad, and before I knew WTF was happening, the entire squad was wiped out.

Am I missing something? How the **** am I supposed to fight those fellas that early in the game?

Sunner I know what you mean, try and get some soldiers with RPGs and rest with long range automatic weapons, cover as well can help just like kneeling. If your soldiers are fast you can run and avoid those rocket attacks.

Later on better armour helps and the bio armour is the best I`ve found so far,if you find the shot-down UFOs too hard when you send your troops in,you can delegate those missions to other troops from different areas(before you except the mission).

This game is tough even on easy level,Sunner check you`ve your game level on easy,go to programs file, ufo folder then profiles, then the game name folder you gave it and look in the "ufo-options" text doc ,you should see "game difficulty INT 2" at bottom,0 is hard,2 is easy.

i just got the game, installed it, patched it to 1.1 and played it...

interface isn't very easy to use, but i suppose that's part of the learning curve. game crashed on the second mission (the first one after the tutorial). seems a lot like X-Com with better graphics. i'll give it another go tomorrow...

It`s a lot tougher then X-com gameplay wise and the aliens are no push over even on easy level, tips I can give are early in the game shotguns are very good for close up kills, for long range shots I use the best long range automatic weapons available and using the "aim" option gives you the longest shoot range.Stock up with lots of ammo, see what weapons & ammon you`ve plenty of in base equipment inventory and try to even out the weapons,so you don`t run low on one particular ammo for the weapon in question.

Equip all men with medi packs and I like to keep my men in groups so if they spot an alien they have better chance of killing it(greater firepower in numbers).

Don`t forget to put your men in training and rotate them, early in the game you don`t have many men but later as you get more bases it`s not a problem, carry two weapons on each soldier,as I said I prefer one long range weapon and one deadly short range close combat weapon,RPG launchers are very handy I like to have one or 2 guys with them.

Reseaching better armour is a must for later on in the game as well.
BTW don`t forget to save often, there`s a quick save key (alt+s).

1.2 update is now out for UFO-Aftermath,you can get it from here .

This is a patch that will upgrade UFO: Aftermath to version Release 1.2

It addresses the following issues:
==================================

Game difficulty can be seen in the Game screen.

Cube-mapped textures fixed

*** In-game bugs ***

Crash-bug with certain configuration of borders fixed.

Crash-bug with picking-up equipment on the current square fixed.

Biomass growth does not stop occasionally

Mission urgency is displayed correctly on the loading screen.

The Alien Power Cell prerequisite can be gained.

Various interface problems are fixed.

Various errors in localization files are fixed.

Various errors with in-game graphics are fixed.

*** System improvements ***

Gamma correction slider added to Launcher

Game should now run on Matrox and SiS video cards

*** Game improvements ***

Paralyzed unit cannot spot enemy.

Door can be destroyed by explosion.

Healing order does not require the units to stand side by side.

The Squad window opens when a mission is accepted.

The soldiers left behind in the first part of a two-phase mission are not lost even if not all enemies were eliminated beforehand.

A hint about opening doors added to tutorial mission.

A newly captured base in Biomass is set to Anti-biomass by default if that technology is available.

Fairer awarding of experience points.

Weapon statistics adjusted: hybrid warp weapons are stronger, human rocket launcher have slightly increased range, alien lasers are slightly weaker, human laser weapons are little bit better, and other minor adjustments.

Nah!!!! I`m just a mad gamer ;),btw little tip for those close up battles,I find the neostead shotgun rifle with 900 damge is deadly at taking out those aliens,so make sure your soldiers have one in their packs for close quarter battles.

I`ve been trying out different weapons, those "enhanced laser rifles" are pretty good on burst mode(300 damage & over 4rps) .

The Neostead shotgun is still my favourite close quarter combat weapon still. Those heavy micro accelerator weapons are very good as well.

I had to start the game over because I didn't save before I left the game ( I left in a hurry, stupid me) so I will have to start over. Mem, did you get to see the rocket wielding aliens yet that are almost impossible to defeat?

Yep,they are not too hard to defeat, you can outrun them if you have fast soldiers, bio armour is handy to have but you only get that later in the game, you can also use long range weapons or even the same alien rocket launchers against them(later on in the game after research).

Ok, that sounds cool then...it shouldn't be too bad. So, did you beat the game yet?

ROTC1983 lets just say I`m near the end with over 53 bases,I just keep taking missions(I love the enemy attacking my base missions) and getting all my soldiers levels up(lowest is level 15,rest are 16-18).

I don`t want to spoil the ending but you`ll know when you are near the end ,then it`s up to you when you go for it ;).

Well, I can't shoot down a UFO if my life depended on it...they keep on crashing in the water. My guys are doing pretty good and I have 12 bases. Finished the Area 51 mission but I got a long ways to go. This should be interesting :) I love the game so far...still don't understand why you can't manufacture basic ammunition :(

Later on in the game you`ll be able to enhance your aircraft in a few ways(with research) so shooting down UFOs is not really a problem.

The key to this game is patience, also what I do in base attack missions is bring all my soldiers together in one area and cover all the exits(soldiers very close to the exits I give neostead shotguns) and just wait, when the aliens arrive they are in for a tough fire fight being all my soldiers are in good positons and kneeling which helps protect them.

Any good strats anyone?

Russian Area 51 is tough, the key is going there with fast soldiers and right weapons & armour, so you might need to do more research before you go there, anyway what I did was find the spot where the aliens were firing those rockets ,reload the mission and fire my rockets at that area before they could fire, also you don`t need to go through the main gate you can blow a hole in the wall, carry lots of grenades, med packs, long range weapons etc.

Fast soldiers can move and get out of trouble.

I have a gattling gun for when we go below, but I think I am going to take a couple grenade launchers to hurt these guys...pretty annoying level :p
