Hey all.

Yeah, got the game on pre-order around the 17th I think. Played a lot at first, all on hard (which I didnt know at the time). Then I get to shooting UFOs down and entering them...geezus. SO, I figured out the settings in the .ini (using ufoaftermath.co.uk) but that kinda put me off at first. Then I realized I could just activate the hard game and make THAT game normal. So I get back into it...only to run into the Russian Dreamland Project place...

Someone asked for strategies. The furthest I got was to kill I think 7-8 aliens in the outside area. I did this by throwing a sh!t load of smoke nades ;)

Aliens just ended up wandering through the smoke and blasting the crap out of me point blank. Oh well.

Sky armour is helping, but i'm not sure it'll be enough. I'll get an entire squad outfitted with sky soon and let ya know how it goes. Far as weapons go, i'll be taking a plasma rifle, a couple of PSG snipers, two enhanced alien laser rifles, a CAR shotgun and a steyr aug...heh, I just like em :) All my soldiers carry either a sub machine gun like the MP45/GK or a USP/Glock/Five-Seven. I find that at close range those pistols are lethal on burst plus I can carry a nade in the other hand.
In addition, 3 medics and 5-6 nades a pieces including acid, incendiary and smoke.

How's that sound Mem (you seem to be furthest out of this group)? :D

Oh, and I have um around 30 bases.

I think some of it is down to luck ;),I had to reload a couple of times and lost a good soldier in the Russian area 51,but got through using some of the wrong tactics,I had all my men in heavy armour so they were very easy targets being they were very slow ,anyway the RPGs/med packs and long range weapons I had got me through and there`s nothing like a good shotgun for close combat inside the building,as they came round the corner they got the full load and dropped like flies.

From what I read the best tactics are fast soldiers and RPGs with lots of grenades with smoke & your best snipers,I guess whatever works for you as they say.

I`m near the end but want to build my soldiers up even more, they are at level 17 and I`ve 60 bases now so the aliens have a lot of work cut out if they want to take out my bases, since I always capture theirs when I get the chance,so far I`ve only lost one soldier which was on that Russian mission.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At the end you go to the moon and then the fun begins,I had a sneak peak but reloaded since I want to improve my men.

:)

Sounds good. What lvl were your guys when you defeated the alien presence at the Russian place and did you have the full team?

I lose plenty of soldiers as I don't like reloading everytime someone dies (too "unrealistic", strange I know ;)), esp. if it looks like i'm gonna win a tough mission. I think my highest lvl guy (one I started the game on hard with) is around 17...several heroic stats incl. speed. I'll have to check tonight and update this.

I think I was around 11-12 level wise,I always like to take 6 soldiers on missions, that way I can split them up in even numbers if I need too ,I always go with teams of two or three when I split them up.

Yeah me too. I just usually send my highest lvl guy scouting since his observation and speed are so high. Then he runs back when enemy sighted and I roll a few bodyguards up there with him, heheh :)

Update & Spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I decided to click on the moon mission which is the very end of the game and you can decide when you`re ready for it.

My soldiers were at level 17 with enhanced laser rifles and neostead shotguns plus the usual med packs and grenades, the moon mission is in two parts ,first is take out aliens around the entrance so you can get to the green square for the entrance to the inside of base and then the hard part inside, you have to destroy certain objects in the alien moon base ,be warned lots of aliens with rocket launchers but hey what`s new.

I found it not too hard but got very low on ammo and I strongly recommend carry as much ammo as you can or pickup alien weapons , in the end all my men survived but were all injured ,anyway after you have blown-up all the objects the game ends and you get an end video clip, the bad thing with the moon mission is it seemed kind of short to me,I had about 28 aliens on that mission & I killed 17 and injured the other 11 so now you know what`s waiting ,good luck ;).

I think it's a cool game, but it's too hard.

I've pretty much given up on the Russian A-51 mission, I guess I could fight my way through it with alot of save-loading, but that isn't my idea of fun.

stupid question: after killing an alien, this is a grey box around the alien. does that mean there is something to pickup, like a weapon? if so, how do i pick it up? i've tried the use key (U) and nothing happens. this is especially common with the humanoid aliens who often have 2 separate boxes near their dead bodies...

thanks.

btw: the game is cool, but the interface sucks. :(

The key to that mission is go when you have decent armour like (sky,BIO armour) and your soldiers should be at a decent level, you don`t need to accept that mission straight away since it will stay on the map until you`re ready.

If you want hard try "The Temple of Evil Elemental" RPG game now that`s hard even without the bugs .

Once you get pass the Russian mission the rest are not as hard IMHO.

Tried the demo, didn't seem that fun really, they just don't make em like UFO Defense anymore...

after playing the game for a mini-marathon session of about 6 hours straight last night, i can safely say that this is a fun game. sure, the interface isn't intuitive, and the music/sound sucks, but as a pure strategy game (think chess) it's awesome! micromanaging really is the key to winning, and more importantly, enjoying the game. it's not a FPS and though it appears to be similar to the Fallout series, UFO-Aftermath requires much more hands-on, step-based strategy. once i learned the layout of the keyboard, and the quirks of the game (like having to be on top of something and going through your inventory to pick it up), the game started coming together. i am really glad that i've played the game long enough to enjoy it. my efforts have definitely been rewarded. btw: i just finished Area51 in Nevada, so i hope i still have a long way to go...

thanks for the posts and comments and feedback, everyone! keep it coming...

simple question about bases: why would i want more than 1 research/engineering base? does R&D go quicker? i can't tell...

thanks.

I believe it does go quicker on research, engineering the more you`ve.I would put those bases in the middle or near military bases so you`ve military bases around or near them, then if a UFO tries to attack/ land at your research/engineering base you can send fighters to try and shoot it down ,also having a military base near means you can respond with your squad team more quickly to repel the alien attack at the invaded base if your fighters fail to shoot it down.

I had about 10 engineering bases and 50 military bases , two research bases(only had two because I had completed the research).

Remember you can change your base to a different type later, no point having lots of research bases if all your research is complete, might as well make most of them engineering/military bases.

I just love this game! Having a blast. It brings back great x-com memories. More bases of research or enginerring does speed that function up. Has anyone checked out silent storm? Its a turn based game thats out in europe now i think. Scheduled out here first of year but I see that go gamer has silent storm import version available. Ppl saying ss is the closest thing to x-com and jagged alliance to date.

anyone know how to run UFO in a window? as the game is only 1024x768, i'd like it have it in a window while i control other Windows apps, like email and such.

thanks...

update
i found out how... make a new shortcut with this as the target:

...\UFO.exe --option fullscreen=FALSE

i have my game installed in a non-default folder, thus my full shortcut looks like this: C:\games\UFO\UFO.exe --option fullscreen=FALSE
