Link .

It`s a X-COM clone type game ,but anybody that was a fan of the classic X-COM games like I`m should keep their eyes open for this game.
UK release date: 3-october-2003
EU release date: october-2003
US release date: october-2003

The storyline of this game has much more depth than XCOM. The removal of action points for movement and the introduction of real time combat, as well as the improved research tree and introduction of a global strategic threat to overcome all combine to make UFO: Aftermath likely be in the running for strategy game of the year.

Preview here@GamersWanted .

Also a short preview here .

Maybe --- I still have my X-COM floppies so I can always just play the original again. I'll wait for some reviews and user comments, but hopefully it will surprise me and be good :)

it's peaked my interest but i don't know enough about it to really get excited. maybe we more reviews and a demo comes out, then i'll get going on the UFO-Aftermath bandwagon.

i really liked X-Com, btw. that was one of my favorite floppy games, along with Syndicate.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (as it was known is the UK) was my favourite game for a long time (syndicate too ;) )

I've pre-ordered Aftermath.

I have a few reservations about it, but have decided not to cancel my pre-order.

My reservations are as follows:

1. 7 person team limit
2. Darker, gloomier graphics. I loved the colours in XCOM. Makes for more distinctive species etc.
3. Can't hide out in buildings except in indoors only maps
4. Not the same dev team

All in all i'm lookin forward to seeing what they come up with. I basically want an XCOM that will run on my PC (too fast for UFO :( )

I also read that 1280x1024 res is supported in UFO-Aftermath so all LCD users will appreciate that :).

Soldier wise I believe you also have some not in the missions but in training as well, anyway 7 is not too bad since I use to play all the old X-COM games with 7 or 8.

Yeah, you could load up the avenger with 26 guys, but it was a pain in the ass to move them all around. Usually I brought 8 or 9 guys and left one of them on the ship so I wouldn't lose it in case there was some kind of tradgedy.

I loved X-Com... it was the first game I bought when we got a brand new Pentium 90 :) I've been wondering if someone out there is making a similar game! Thanks for posting this. I do wish it was turn-based though!

I liked terror from the deep.

I wish they'd come out with another Master of Magic though! Microprose ruled :(

UFO Defense was ... excellent. Terror from the Deep was near Impossible. I thought Apocalypse was a very good balance of economics/research/team development/combat, with the realtime/turn based options. But I'm going to wait for demos and reviews, I've fallen for hype before (and I hate to waste my cash that way).

I've also tried some of the Laser Squad Nemesis, which is supposed to have been developed by some of the original XCom devs. It's been a long time since I've played a good turn based game.

Thanks for the heads up.

Terror from the deep SUCKED. It was UFO Defense over again, but they decided to fvck the whole thing up and make it crappy. There was only one actual addition to the game, which was the ability for some weapons to work only under or above water. Other than that, the changes were crap. They completely fvcked the reasearch tree up. I mean, they had all the same weapons and items but gave them new names and graphics, but now you had to do ridiculous things like do an autopsy on a dead alien before you could research his gun.

Never mind the other problems I had, like spending over 100 turns in a terror mission after killing all the aliens (I spent HOURS looking for a last alien and never found it, eventually I quit the game and laoded at my last save point)

is this game out yet?

Yes it`s out and there`s also a patch out already.I`ve had the game for 2 days now and it`s not bad,you only have one fixed resolution of 1024x768 but there are plenty of weapons/armour and other stuff later on in the game, lots of different aliens and the real time battles take awhile to get use too since X-COM was turned based, but then this is not a X-COM game. You can do research with items .

In a way it does feel like X-COM but they could of improved on UFO-Aftermath to allow you to build your own bases etc rather then you capture them as you progress, believe me you end up with lots of bases.

Overall not a bad game so far but I`m still in the USA area of the game, you can choose what part of the world to start at.
The game comes with two CDs and the usual manual which is not too big but covers pretty much everything..

It`s not a hard game to get into but I would suggest you run through the tutorital at the start,it does not take long and gives you the main playing style.

Btw when I say it`s out I mean in the UK,I think it`s out in the US in a few weeks.

New review here .

The X-Com fans, who played Enemy Unknown and/or Terror from The Deep will feel right at home from the start. When you will start a new game, you will be ?welcomed? by a geosphere, which is actually a 3D model of Earth, which you can rotate at will, in order to watch the events that are happening around the world.

Is it pausable real-time so you can stop and issue orders, like in Baldur's Gate / Icewind Dale, or a frantic click-fest like a real-time strategy game?

Pausable.

There are also quite a few auto-pause settings, so you can have it auto pause when someone gets hurt, runs out of ammo, etc etc.

Yes,infact if a soldier spots an alien the game will pause, there are three different speed settings in real time as well, even the fastest setting is slow, you`ll have no worries controlling your men.

I forgot to say you can pause the game by hitting spacebar or from onscreen menu.

Update:I really like this game now,it has things from the old X-com games like you can shoot down UFOs(if you`re lucky) and get to go in alien ships for a fire fight plus the usual storm the alien bases when found and even defend your own bases.

Research and development is very huge with so many things you can research, weapons choice also gets bigger as you progress.I won`t say the game is perfect since there`s no such thing as the perfect game for everyone..

You also have options for three types of bases(military, research, engineering) and can change them later if needed.

Soldier training is pretty good since you can train them up in different areas & improve their medic, sniper, soldier etc skills when they have the required stats for further training.

DaveSimmons,no problem :),wait until you go to the area 51 in Russia(not the American one that`s easy) that`s the hardest mission so far and I lost a very good soldier, nightmare mission is all I can say without giving any info away,I hope it doesn`t get any tougher then that.
