any smokers hate smoking outside of work?

I've casually picked up smoking again.. BAH! I hate it..

What I hate most is smoking outside of my office building - i feel like standing outside of a building is only acceptable at bars, so i walk around the block until I'm done smoking.

Anyone else have this hang up?

I've seen people do that. I think they feel the negative fluids from the other workers at the building, so they don't hang around the doors.

(I don't smoke cigarettes)

Nope. And, to help others not feel like you, we ban all smoking on company property. If an employee wants to light up, they have to walk 1/2 mile to the road.

There is.

I used to go in to the office early to get work done, and I'd have a smoke before anyone from my team was there (standing outside the office).

I don't let anyone at the office know I smoke because there are such negative attitudes toward smoking.

I don't do that anymore though, I just have the occasional cigarette at home.

In fact, hmm, I'm working from home today. Be back in a minute...

i just walk around the corner and lean against my truck and smoke while playing solitaire on my phone. who cares who can see me? if im bored and tired, ill walk around while smoking to get the muscles moving.

Case in point.

I understand not wanting people to smoke right next to the doors, but why not have a designated smoking area not too far away where the smoke won't bother people? I mean, sure, people will walk 1/2 mile to smoke when there's 10% unemployment; but when the economy improved I would certainly consider leaving a company that treated me like that.

there is a sears call center by my exes work. every time i drove by the designated smoking area (that was covered, had mister systems, ashtrays and trash cans as well as tables and benches) they would all be standing by the parking lot about 30 ft from the area smoking. standing in the middle of the drive area for every car passing thru the parking lot. 30 fucking feet from shade (this is az, dammit) and a chair, yet they decide to block traffic instead. dumbasses.

Because we pay 85% of their healthcare costs, and I expect them to at least get a little exercise if they want to smoke. We offer cessation programs and 100% coverage for Chantix to help them quit.

Hell, up until 6 months ago, I was one of the ones walking out there and I created the policy.

I'm a smoker and I have no problem going outside to smoke. I don't understand why companies make it intentionally difficult to smoke for no other reason than to make it difficult.

Why don't they put the vending machines on a floor with no elevators?
Or <insert action> against <insert your vice> for <insert no good reason>?

If you own the property, tell them to leave...

What I find funny - people who smoke in cars, with the windows cracked about 6", while holding the cigarette out the window.

But..no - it doesn't bother me smokers have to stand outside to smoke.

What does bother me is the smoking area is right next to the entrance to the back of our office which is littered with used cigarettes all over the ground [even though there is a bin available to throw away the used up cigarette].

Wow that's actually pretty smart!

If someone wants to have more than 600 calories in their lunch, do they have to keep the food in a kitchen/fridge 1/2 a mile away?

No, obesity is to dangerous to discriminate against.

I know it sucks especially because our president is overweight and doesn't smoke

Because that's relevant....

And the fact that someone smokes or not is?

Yes. It's a burden on our healthcare costs, depreciates our image to our outside vendors/customers, and requires us to set up space for them when it can be used to house something beneficial to our company. Not to mention the majority of exempt smokers wasted a ton of time smoking when they only had to walk 500 ft, myself included.
