Any skill involved in the boardgame RISK?

Thinking of buying it but I haven't played in years. I've played monopoly and LIFE a few times over the last year or so and am convinced that 95% of each game is luck. There is very little real skill or self-control you have over these games.

So is risk the same way or is it heavy into strategy? Luck contributes obviously with the roll of the dice but how much of this game is genuine player skill?

If I start out with the right pieces I always make a move for Austrailia and South America. Easy to defend

A lot of it is skill as far as I'm concerned. The dice rolls basically even out for everyone over time, so it's all about strategically positioning your armies.

I'd say it's about 60% luck (if the dice rolls don't go your way at the beginning you could be in trouble), and 40% skill (positioning of armies, places to attack). It's a great game though....too bad none of my friends know how to play.

Hmm RISK is mostly luck I think although there are some tactics to it. If U want a little more strategy then I would suggest "The settlers of Catan" Dunno if it is available in the states or if it has a different name, but this game is awesome. There are also many variations and extensions available....

edit: it is availble in the states with the exact name: linky

Some, but boardgames don't tend to have nearly the skill requirement that other games do, the strategies involved are pretty primative at best. Board games are oriented at fostering social interaction, rather than challenging your skill. If you want an example of a skill-based (rather than luck based) game, ditch the board games and play something like Sid Meier's Civilization.

I like castle risk the best, it actually will the game to end if some player goes on the offensive, dont get me wrong games can last 5 hours plus but ive played games of risk where they just never ended.

You can say Risk is all luck all you want, but I haven't lost for about 20 straight games.

ive had this argument before:

i dont care how good you are at risk, if you continually roll low and your opponents high you cant win.

Skill and luck. Sometimes luck can play a big factor, but often it comes down to good planning. I raped the crap out of my friend's army, even though he had like 9999999 more men than me, simply by getting awesome dice rolls 9999999 times in a row.

As earlier mentioned, if you want a great strategy game go with Sid Meir's Civilization 3. Ive have spent HOURS upon HOURS playing that game. Its only downfall is that its not multiplayer.

Although it would be hard to be multiplayer considering it takes many many days to play even one game.

Axis and allies is good but I don't think mrs.skoorb would care to put the time in to learn it. I remember playing with a friend and even we didn't know all the rules for a while :p

Not a bad game, I'd say.

Why hasn't anyone suggested Diplomacy yet?

It's truly 100% skill, as there aren't any dice. The rules are also relatively simple.
