What is the piece of equipment called?

Yes in the middle of the pic dwarfing the tow motor near the bottom!

Wow, my first quick glance at your title -- Any riggers in the house? -- had me craning my neck in initial disbelief. I could scarcely container myself and was thinking, "What the ship?"

I call them straddle trucks. that was the vernacular for their smaller predecessors in the apple warehouse districts where I grew up.

Awesome! :)

I figured either you or BoomerD would chime in with some words of wisdom. :awe:

I saw those things zipping around the warehouse districts when I was riding my bike, they kinda scared the crap out of you. You were never sure if the operator saw you from 14 feet up. They had ginourmously long chain drives down the side, they really did "zip around". Think of the sounds the old carnival rides make.

Yes I know that sound too well.

Fortunately for me I watch them from the distance. I took that picture when I was in Bridgetown, Barbados in 2007. Another busy port is Freeport, Bahamas. Those guys run those things so fast you can hear the tires squealing! Amazing they don't tip over. Tron anyone? :D

Bah...no rigger needed with those.

Mobile container lifting equipment can be known by a wide variety of names, depending on locale and manufacturer.

Straddle buggy, straddle truck, top pick, travelifts, translifts are all just a few of the multitude of names for such equipment.

If the rigger is of African-American descent, is he a "n*gger rigger?"

According to the black ironworkers I've worked with...yes he is.
