Different shortage problem, but we can't find any decent network administrators to replace the guy that left where I worked. It's been a solid five months now, and everyone we've talked to isn't very good. I guess that someone with good firewall experience can afford to be picky at the moment.

Working a firewall isn't all that difficult. The problem is between two edges of the sword. The hiring entity is chasing a paper tiger with a McDonlads salary offering. The other is scamming their illegitimate education, le tigre de paper, with their personal knowledge which probably could do the job. I've seen this mentality in SBC-run wireline back in 2008 and it was all to drive some director/AVP/VP needing to be able to say on their annual report that they have X number of certified individuals under them. I could run circles around paper tigers in several areas and the only paper I had is TP.

I just read a big long article about the shipping port of Savannah having similar issues that LA is having. They have more container ships coming in than they can reasonably handle. The problem is that once they unload a ship, they have to sort through the containers and get them loaded on trucks and trains to get them out of the port. There aren't enough trucks/trains coming because of the backlogs and the ships keep rolling in. Now, not only are some ships anchored 17 miles offshore, they're running out of space on land.

I'm guessing we're going to see a bunch of logistics changes in businesses if this doesn't resolve itself soon.

All the ports are presently breaking TEU records every month, month after month. Everybody in North America ordered to restock, buffer stock, and for the holidays around the same time resulting in a huge crush of shipments. China is better (much better) at making and shipping stuff out than we are at receiving and warehousing goods. The inherent inefficiencies and lack of capacity in the US intermodal system are on stark display for everybody to see now. It's like a snake trying to swallow car.

The only reason degrees or experience are required is so HR or a hiring manager can more quickly weed out candidates that aren't fit for a job OR would require too much training during the onboarding process. Present company excluded, but you can assume that a larger majority of the population may be unfit to work in many skilled labor positions without close supervision. Those minimums are there to reduce applicant pools to a reasonable number of professionals to consider. That's how it works though...you gotta pay to play.

Of course, some positions require certifications or state exams (ie...medical professions). Often, those are accompanied by minimums education requirements too so they can claim a specific standard.

Higher education is pretty funny though. I saw a local college business school a few years back that had a job opening for a professor. I didn't want to teach, but was curious about the existing faculty in the business program. They all had the same Doctor of Business Administration from Argosy University (fly-by-night pay for degree program). I think Argosy was accredited, but not sure by who before they went out of business. They likely had very little credibility among peer institutions based on that shit show. I wouldn't have been suspicious if it wasn't the ONLY doctorate level degree any faculty in the department held.

At this point, I'm just curious how many goods are going to be essentially shelved in-transit because of the lack of trucks. If you consider something like a shipment of cellphones or televisions....these items actually do have some level of depreciation as new models continue to come out. Lost revenue isn't just going to show up by consumers buying other items, but the items stores receive won't be worth full MSRP if they don't get them out there quick enough. It's going to be fun to watch and perhaps there will be some decent deals if you keep a keen watch on specific items/models.

Went to Costco in Tumwater (Olympia) on Monday. the only toilet paper they had in the whse was the super-jumbo rolls for dispensers. None for "home" use.
I was able to order from Costco.com, at a slightly higher price...and, of course, I had to spend $75 on qualified items to get free shipping. (but only one package of TP)

And...Costco notified me last night that the one item that drove my order...the toilet paper...was out of stock.

Apparently a big issue is the chassis that they set containers on. A lot of the warehouse space is full so they've got full containers sitting on chassis that can't be sent back to the ports or railhead to pull more containers even though there are available drivers.

I know what you're saying. I suppose general education goes a long way in the eyes of many.

What I used to see more often was the job descriptions and minimum requirements were written or edited by idiots. You might get someone that earns a Master's Degree that's in the position. They appeal to their supervisors to have HR rewrite the position requirements to REQUIRE a Master's Degree. That's all a ploy to get HR to increase the pay of the position while they're the incumbent, you know to pay off their school loans.

Went shopping today and it seems like TP, chicken and a few other random things are in very low supply. Haven't been able to get hot chili oil in a couple weeks. The Tortilla chip section was almost completely empty

no 32oz meat lasagna ($6) at Trader Joes for the past couple of weeks.

These days I'm just buying 10lb bags of potatoes and 15lb bags of rice and making fried potatoes/fried rice multiple times/week. Since my wife has celiac, it works out decent for all of us. Both of those items can be had for cheap and they go a long way.

Right now, meat is what's expensive here. Steak prices have been high and the typical quality the stores stock have been that "USDA Choice" crap. (no marbling/tough meat for $10/lb)

USDA choice is what the vast majority of people eat, I've never even seen Prime grade anything in a retail grocer's meat dept. We carry prime strips, ribeyes, fillets but only a small amount, the pricing is insanely high and few restaurants want to charge what they have to to earn a profit. Oh, choice DOES have marbling in order to be graded as such.

Select is one grade below choice but the point is you have to the store and see how they look, I've seen select that's damm close to prime and I've seen choice that's close to no-roll. Stay away from most anything from Mexico unless you've got jowl muscles like a Hyena to chew on it.
