What is this effect called, and where can I learn more about it?

Think of a time someone brusquely told you what to do. How did you respond to their command? With resistance. In a way, their command "pushed" on you, and some part of you wanted to push back. They said "Do as I say," and your first reaction was "No way. You can't tell me what to do." It's human nature.

You've probably noticed this: Whenever you push on people, they tend to push back. In fact, people so hate to be told what to do that if someone commands them to do something they WANT to do, they often won't do it, just because of the resistance the command created.

So, again, what is this effect called, and where can I learn more about it?

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, if it's a defense mechanisim or an impulse... Masterson refers to the Talionic Impulse ( the desire to get even ) in discussing Bordeline and Narcissistic Personalities..

BTW just finished a MA in Counseling, lots of Psych in that degree

Masterson Institute

the universality of this effect is true throughout the human race, except for republicans, who miss out on two counts: 1. they are more than happy to be pushed around like sheep. 2. they are not human.

Never heard a term for it, but it's a big principle in behavioral psych (rewards are more effective than punishment). It's also what the book How to Win Friends and Influence People is based on.

Buttzilla.... thanks :)

It's an art more than a science in my perspective. You can learn the science, but practicing it is an art.

Still thinking on this, I'm sure there's an answer that fits the question better. One thing I've always noticed about getting people to do what you want them to do... It's always nice to be asked. It's how Eisenhower defined management... 'getting people to do what you want them to and have them think it's their idea'.

Well, more specifically, I'd like you to focus on this aspect of it:

In fact, people so hate to be told what to do that if someone commands them to do something they WANT to do, they often won't do it, just because of the resistance the command created.

I'd like to further research that idea. My mother can't seem to comprehend it. I'm 21 and living at home for financial reasons (paying my own tuition), but she can't seem to understand that when she nags me about doing homework, I want to do it less. I'm fine with doing homework if people would just shut up about it. I can't understand why I can go from wanting to do it to hating it just by somebody telling me to do it.

so if I can further research this, perhaps I can find a way to resist this effect

I don't really know if there is a specific term for that particular effect. Then again, I've worked in a cognitive psych lab for the past few years, and so my behavior psych is probably waaaay rusty.

I just sent an email to the members of the psychology department at my old school. Hopefully, one of them will know about it and send me back a reply.

Depends on the city... here in Chicago there are more Masters and Doctors from all the fine Insitutes and schools... it's tough to find an Internship for graduation let alone licensure.. where I'm going (Portland, Maine) it's the most listed in the want adds (under social service)
