Any P4 Users out there?

MagnusTheBrewer

IN MEMORIAM
Greetings,
I've spent the last several hours reading around the forums and have begun to wonder if ANYONE posting is running a P4 system. I realize that AMD seems to be winning the gaming wars but, other than a few references to Macs, I can't seem to find any problems posted by non AMD users. Coincidence? Look, I'm not trying to invite flamage, I'm just wondering where are all the P4 users? Thanks in advance,
Cheers!

I built my P4 3.2C system a year ago and it has worked flawlessly since then and I'm perfectly happy with it.

However, when you can buy an A64 2800+ and motherboard for $200 that's faster than a P4 3.0 GHz and motherboard that costs $300, I can't recommend P4 to anyone on a budget.

At every price point right now, A64 is faster and cheaper than P4 for games and most other apps.

I'm not a fanboi, just a realist. A64 is winning right now, just like ATI is winning in the under-$200 video card market and nvidia is the best choice for $200 and up.

Even intel has admitted (as much as they can) that Prescott was a failure. Will buying a P4 ever make sense again? Probably someday, but not right now.

I am running this PC with a P4 1.7 ghz.... i feel special... well not for long... ive had this PC for 4 years and now im passing it over to my sister and im building my new PC now... It has an AMD 4000 so i guess that ads one more to the endless AMD users on these forums 🙂

i have a 2.8c but my main rig is an a64, and i have been reasonably happy with both. you know now that you mention it i really havent seen much talk of p4s in general hardware lately.

P4 550 3.4GHz, the only reason im running this is the intel retailedge deal i got...
nice and fast for me... though otherwise i would have gotten a A64 🙂

DDR2 ram is $$$ 🙁

oh, it replaced a P4 1..6a@2.4ghz 😛

You can look at my rig and see I have a 3.0c. When I bought it the AMD64s were not out yet and it was about the fastest thing around (other then the EE chips).

Of course thats totally changed now. Were I buying now I would go AMD64. I am not really loyal to AMD or Intel. I just generally go with whats best at the time I buy.

Thanks for the replies. I've just begun building a new system. I ordered a Koolance PC2-650 case. While I have built newer systems for friends, my current poor old machine is a real dinosaur. PIII 500 Mhz OC'd to a mighty 550 with 384 meg of pc100 ram. Stop yer laffin. I manage to play NWN just fine thank you but, I admit to lusting after something a bit speedier. I planned on staying with a Intel CPU just because in my online research I had settled on the ABIT AA8 Duramax. Still, nothings written in stone and, as I'm buying the pieces parts a little at a time, I can always go a different direction. I do kind of like the $200 price point for each of the components as it fits my disposable income fairly well. I'm currently looking at the Intel 540 cpu.

I run a P4 3.4C rig. I don't plan on upgrading to this or even consider another system for at least 2 years. I have other expenses now.

But if I were in the market the A64/NF4 SLI combo would be a strong contender for my computing dollar.

Just to keep things interesting I will say that P4s will probably have the edge in multitasking situations thanks to HT.

There are a lot of P4 users out here.
We just don't proselytize like the AMD64 people do. There are even AMD XP users out here.
They've been made to feel so inferior by their AMD brothers, that they don't say much either.

Don't worry, when the dual core CPU's come out, the AMD64 people will jump ship. 😉

Who is using a P4 is the title here, not which one is better for what.

Which one is better threads never have a single conclusion, but they do have many conclusions that add up to form a flaming jungle of crap and people who think they know what they are talking about.

I am not attacking your statement, I am trying to prevent a riot.

I'm running a 2.26ghz P4 at 2.6ghz and am very happy with it. Looking back at the time that I bought it (over two years ago), I think I made the right decision.

My 2.4GHZ P4 has been very faithful to me for nearly a year and a half now. I was in college when I bought it and didn't have tons of cash. Therefore, I went and bought the parts on Ebay (don't bash me please). It runs doom3 nicely (not tremendously great, but good) and any other games I'm playing atm. I now have a well paying job and just can't stand the tempation to go blow all my salary on a new rig, so I'm jumping ship and moving onto the A64 boat.

Look at my sig.
The P4 3.4c was built 8 months ago, it's my main rig that stays on 24/7. It's mostly used by my 13 year old daughter, who spends hours surfing and talking to her friends on aol. She creates pictures of horses in PS, and has 5 things going at the same time. I use it for doing bills, and I've played D3 on it.

My FX53 was built 3 months ago, it's my game machine where I play CS:S.

So I've got the best of both worlds.

There should be A LOT of Northie users out there (like me)... Thing is, Northwoods are yesterday's news and many of us are not willing to go Pres-hott.

I do like some of the new stuff from Intel for HTPC applications like their D915POM microBTX LGA775 P4 motherboard which is home-theater component-ready. So there might be another P4 in my future.

Rig in sig. Absolutely 100% flawless in stability. The only thing AMD has over Intel is the price to performance ratio.

That said, I'm moving to an AMD based system - waiting on a PCI-E 6800GT.

i guess the P4 users have their hardware issues worked out. I bought my 2.6C a year and a half ago before i knew enough to wait for the 64's. Now if you're building a new rig i think everyone pretty much knows to go with the AMD64's. It's kind of a no brainer. I will not get a prescott since my northwood takes 3.25 easily and LGA is out until DDR2 is less $$. I think i'm gonna wait out the next year and see what happens with the Dual cores. oh god a dual core with ddr3 and geforce 8

I'm running a 3.2C @ 3.6 right now but I'm eyeballing the Epox nForce3 Ultra boards and a 90nm 3200+ and overclocking the daylights out of it.
