I haven't drawn a deer tag in the last 2 years here 🙁 However, I will be trying for pheasants in a few weeks 🙂

Went out for about 4 hours (8-12) will go back out at 3:30, saw a decent size 6 pointer and some does but i want the big 10 i have seen a few times back there. Fun stuff today....

As far as cleaning it, I will have to get help doing that, just because i dont know how to do it. When i have to drag it out, im stoked we have a ATV 😀.

I've generally always been against killing animals, but.. thinking about it recently... the meat you buy in a store comes from a slaughtered animal anyway, so..

If I could stomach the cleaning part, I would totally be into it. I would love to get hundreds of pounds of high quality, free range, hormone free, virtually guarenteed healthy(due to natural selection) meat for virtually free. The money savings is only half of it.. the meat itself would be so much better for you, plus for me.. it would be a continuation of not supporting the mass meat industry. I already try not to by buying organic free range meat, but you can't do that all the time(fast food, etc).

You have to clean the animal very shortly after you kill it, right? I guess I could probably stomach it, but.... it would definately weird me out probably the first few times.

Maybe I could just find someone that could do that part to hunt with me. 😉

The cleaning part is a good experience.. 😛 A little gross but good never the less..

However, savings is part of it.. But it can still be costly to a new hunter...

If you had no gear..

Boots -150
Rifle - 300
License 25
Getting the deer cut up how you like... well over 100...

But it's all worth it when you get your first deer..

being female and liking all fury things, with the exception pf pubic hair blaaa, I wouldnt be able to live after killing an animal.

See, I used to think like this too.. but when you realize that the meat you're eating comes from dead animals anyway, I would much rather have full control over my meat. :Q😀

Plus, the meat would be so much better for you....

Well, yeah.. as with anything, there would be some initial expense.. but in the long run, you could potentially save a LOT of money, while bettering yourself at the same time.

<--- my new bow just cost over $600, not counting arrows .....

Anywho, going out again, wish me luck again, hopefully i see the 10 pointer instead of the 6....

True..

However getting a deer prepped the way you like it ( unless you do it yourself ) can cost a good bit,,,

Deer Jerky is the absolute best..

Very lean, very healthy.

🙂

Plus you are keeping the heard in check

If I was going to start doing it, I would probably go all the way and learn how to take my own cuts of meat instead of paying someone else to do it.

You can, You mainly only need a band saw... 😛

I'm not positive but, i think you lose a bit of meat if you don't have all the right tools... Including a smoker..

Going Mulie hunting on Monday
I won't bother with Whitetail as I have 3 tags
It will take me the whole year to finish up the freezer . . .
For those that worry about the death of animal don't, Its damn few that lie down and die peacefully on a sunny day in a meadow.
I use a 7-08 for everything, deer to moose.

I haven't hunted in nearly 10 years. Deer hunting is like a State religion in Michigan. People pull their kids out of school, small businesses close down during the week, carrots and beats and hunting supplies are sold everywhere. Hell, Doctors advertise 'Hunter's Special! Free Mossey Oak hand warmers with every office visit!'
It's pretty much a region ritual here too. Many kids miss school to hunt, many small business do close, hunting supplies are rampant, you see hunters in camo and blaze orange everywhere...

Oh boy, i would love to hunt with your family..

It's nice to hunt on a private farm.

Where are you from?

OHIO!

I live in east Columbus (near the I-71 & OH-256 exchange), and the farms we own are about 45 miles south of here.

What did you get?

I got back from bow hunting just a little while ago... saw 2 doe within range, but too tough of a shot because of some brush... turned them down (I have 1 buck tag, 2 doe tags and 1 either sex tag). Didn't see another deer for a couple of hours, then ran across a few within range, but it was too late to shoot them. Ticks were horrible today! One day each year during archery, it seems like I end up with 30 or 40 ticks, and those are the only ticks I see all year. We need a hard frost.

BTW, $100 to have a deer processed? That's INSANE! Learn to do it yourself. Plus, if you want jerky or sausage or pepperoni or (etc.), you can buy the kits with the ingredients for 5 or 10 bucks. No nonsense way to cut up a deer for the beginner: First: skin deer. Then wipe down the deer with cheesecloth to remove any hairs that got left behind. (I know a couple of people who use a blow torch to quickly singe away any hair.) Inside, there are 2 thin strips of meat. These are the tenderloins. Carefully cut these out. On the back, there's a long strip of meat on each side.... carefully cut these out.. these are the loins. Slice the loins into whatever thicknesses you want. The hind quarters = sirloin steaks. 1st cut the meat away from the bone, you'll get better each time you do it. Slice into steaks. Save the last hunk of each side for a roast, or else use it for hamburg. Front quarters: cut a roast or 2 if you want... the rest is good for hamburger. Any remaining meat = hamburger. The first time you do it yourself, it'll take 2 or 3 hours. After a couple of years (and a few deer), you can get the process down to under half an hour (especially if you have a helper). I think it's insane to pay someone $100 for what amounts to 30 minutes of work for them.
