Single player...
Lots of side missions...
Leveling up...
Getting better weapons along the way...?

It's called RPG. Look it up. :p

Seriously though, I assume you want something that is similar to Borderlands (guns, first person, open world)? Hmm, what about Stalker?

To me, Bulletstorm looks similar to Borderlands, but that's just based on the visual presentation. I've not played it, though, so I have no idea about the gameplay.

I love Borderlands.

If you like Boarderlands, you probably won't like your typical RPG. Most RPGs actually focus on a story rather than running around killing random things just because some guy said so.

Yeah I was going to say the closest games to Borderlands are Diablo II and WoW. Level treadmill, fetch quests, grinding for items, etc.

Fallout 3 is the closest game to it if you also take style and setting into account. But at its core, Borderlands is First Person Diablo II With Guns.

That's an insult to D2. D2 had more story in the first quest than Boarderlands had in the whole damned game.

I admit, it's pretty easy to just go do whatever in D2 and not pay attention to the story, but if you're into it, there's a pretty decent story line to follow in D2.

True. D2 had some pretty decent cinematic cutscenes as well.

My friends always called it borederlands :D

But as far as FPS RPG games Fallouts your best bet and you can play it without VACS. At least till the Bungie MMOFPS comes out.

I really liked borderlands too, but as people said the story is lacking. I feel like the game could have be morphed and made awesome though.

I'm on playthrough 2.5 on my second character on borderlands. I have a huge backlog of games to play, but I just can't stop playing Borderlands. FWIW, I hate hate hated STALKER. I love that Borderlands doesn't take itself seriously.

Oh so after you play through twice you can play even again and keep raising your level?

Yup. The game levels up all the monsters with you for playthrough 2.5. I did find that the General Knoxx DLC wasn't properly leveled for my level 69 character though. :(

You can only reach level 50 in the base game. You will do this way before you reach the end of playthrough 2. Playthrough 2.5 makes all gear and normal mobs level 48, but you only get to run around and kill things and find loot. There are no story missions any longer. Bosses are 2-3 levels above you I believe. Knoxx raised the level cap to 61, but didn't raise any of the base game or DLC 1. DLC 4 raised it again to 69 for those that had Knoxx, or 58 for those that didn't. There was also a patch released that rescaled base game, DLC1, DLC3 and DLC 4 depending on certain story triggers.

There is a user made program that you can run on your save game and it will reset the story mode for playthrough 2.5, but it's pretty flaky. Most useful for resetting the 3 combat arena's, or missions that give special loot.
