THeir DNS servers dropped off the face of the earth about 30 mins ago.

Manually entered one of Verizon's DNS servers (4.2.2.2) to get myself back up & running, & then promptly went to download smoothwall so I don't have to deal with this again.

Among other things allows me much greater DHCP scope control (so I can setup some alternates outside of Comcast's) than the stock linksys firmware on my wireless router.

Similar in function to Microsoft's ISA server, but GPL.

Mine is messed up here in seattle. Sometimes i can get on google/atot/etc while AIM is still working and then other times it wont, all while im talking to people on aim.
A tech guy was out earlier and said something about cables that got cut in the area but thats weird that all over comcrap is crappin out.

Comcast has been very reliable for me in the past... I guess a partial outage once a year isn't too bad. :)

Good point. :)

thier dns server is probably down, you could use 216.165.129.157 as a dns server, but its probably less reliable than comcasts............. although it is up right now.

Doesn't matter, you can force the DNS servers and still obtain everything else automatically. Goto control panel/network connections/properities on your LAN connection. Properties on tcp/ip, then set the bullet to use the following DNS servers. Voila =)

The 4.1.1.1 I mentioned earlier is no good.

Yep - having the same problems here with Brighthouse (RoadRunner) in Tampa FL.

I used the following DNS servers - a bit slow - but working now.

4.2.2.1
4.2.2.3

Absolutely all problems with Comcast internet are DNS related right now. Someone posted some alternative DNS server IP's earlier in the thread, so credit to them, and to the folks at DSLreports for the fix:

[Connectivity *****Fix for outage*****

it is stickied there, maybe someone can make this a sticky here?

I changed my DNS servers from automatic to 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 and I'm back up and running fine.

hope this helps

ping the IP before you enter it as your DNS. I don't think 4.1.1.1 is valid, at least not for me

Wow and I thought it was just me. It was bad here in Illinois, couldn't get to anything. But it seems to be better now.
