How many rice eaters here have a $200+ rice cooker?

I was shopping for one in an asian supermarket and was amazed at their prices.

Dude, I have a cheap ($40) rice cooker from Target and it still does a nice job.

yeah but do they have the neat little features? such as not burning the rice. or keeping it good for most of the day?

Yes, most have a thermostat that prevents them from getting too hot and burning the rice. And after the "cook" cycle is done, it sets it on a "keep warm" cycle.

Mine was cheap, about $30, and made in China. But then again the Chinese should know how to make a rice cooker.

hmm i will have to look into getting one then.

Some of my asian coworkers commented the other day at lunch their disappointment in being continually served bread as opposed to rice. I find rice a little bland, but cheap and good when mixed in a meal. Still, I prefer the good ole potato, the white man's carb.

Potatoes are MUCH more nutritious than rice, FYI.

Then why do rice eaters live longer than potato eaters?

Potatoe is not as good as rice, it's good, but as a survival meal isn't great. Rice's biggest problem is the reliance on it, and lack of other parts of the diet. Potatoe is usually coupled with something else and doesn't have the problem.

Yes, I need rice with most meals if appropraite. Obviously a meat sauce or tomato sauce, pasta goes best. In terms of the standard "slab of meat, handful of veggies" type of meal, i require rice.

And right then and there i realized steak (or any meat for that matter) sucks without rice. Any asians suffer from this?

i always get ticked off being 'classified' as an 'asian'
sure it is located in asia but the philippines is a country in and of itself
it has a diverse cultural background that needs to be celebrated
i'm a proud pinoy and rightfully so do not like to be lumped into a classification

But you still bubble in "Asian & Pacific Islander" ;).

Tbh, what you just said could be said for any "asian" nation. Heck, even countries as close as Taiwan & China have seperate "diverse cultural backgrounds". It's not like "Asia" is an actual country with its own specific cultural background that the Philippines is somehow drastically different then. Your statement implies that China, Taiwan, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, etc. are NOT diverse in and of themselves.

Depends on the dish. If there's a sizzling beef hot plate then I must have a bowl of rice, otherwise it doesn't feel right. Other times there'd be so much food on the table, I'd reduce my rice intake and concentrate more on the dishes.

I don't have a craving for rice, but I do crave for authentic chinese dinner once every so often. Same goes for dim sum. And that's especially so when you're on holidays in another city where everything is foreign and all I'd be craving is to find an authentic chinese restaurant.

I'm pretty damn Asian. If I'm eating Asian food, I want my rice. Well, not for sure, but I can eat Korean BBQ w/o rice. I mean it's meat. I would rather enjoy my meat than rice. But rice is always good.

If I buy take-out from Chinese restaurants, I'll cook my rice because it's just so much better...

Now, if I'm eating Western food, no I will not want rice. I don't want rice with my in-n-out. If I'm at a steakhouse, I want my damn prime rib medium rare, not Asian style on a sizzling plate. I will eat my mashed potatoes and creamed spinach and bread or whatever comes along.

Rice is only a necessity when I eat Asian food, and I'm damn Asian myself. If I'm eating at home, every meal will be Asian. I cook only Asian, and while I can make lasagna and I have pasta sauce, I still cook only Asian foods.

Rice, pasta, potatoes, it's all good to me. I currently eat the most rice and potatoes (cook rice with a cheap $30 Black and Decker rice cooker from Walmart, works fine, doesn't burn). I'd eat more pasta but I can't get that al dente thing right, or seem to drain it properly. I guess that's just more reason to eat more pasta :p
