Any opinions on 27" 1080p monitors?

So I have a family member in need of a replacement monitor. I am going to give them my 22" LG (1680x1050) and use this as an excuse to upgrade to something a little big larger.

My initial thought was to go with a Dell P2414H but I see for not too terribly much more I could go with the P2714H as well. I have never seen a 27" 1080p monitor first hand so I am a bit curious how the lower pixel density works out in real life. A 1440p monitor is pretty much out of the question because I don't want to drop a huge chunk of cash on a suitable video card to drive it. My monitor sits within a couple of feet of my eyes.

My needs are for something I can game on and also do some basic photo editing on (Lightroom mainly). I figure something IPS is probably the way to go although I could be swayed into a TN panel as well. My LG is a TN and I have been quite happy with it.

What's your budget? If you're sitting at desktop distances, I'm not a fan of 1920x1080 for a 27'' panel.

Have you considered a dell u2412m? 1920x1200, IPS, 24'', You can frequently find them on sale on amazon for $250 or less depending on how you feel about amazon warehous deals.

I would like to stay at $300 or lower, but going over isn't a huge deal.

I was actually looking at the u2412m / u2414h this morning and those look like they would fit the bill assuming they have decent gaming performance. I think I have talked myself out of the 27" panel at this point. Sitting two feet away from such a big screen might be a little silly anyhow. It does sound neat though.

I really like the u2412m because it's 1920x1200, and the u2414 is 1920x1080. I like the extra pixels. Both should fit into your budget.

Gaming performance on the u2412m is solid. I have one, and I don't notice any ghosting or any significant input lag. If even better gaming perf + IPS are important to you, the dell u2312hm is a bit cheaper, an inch smaller, 1920x1080, but it has been measured to have almost no input lag.

Go for the U2414H borderless. I have 2 of these and would not want anything else. Try to hunt for a good price.

The 1920x1080 was a turn off at first. I wanted 1920x1200 but when you are sitting close, and doing basic stuff, the larger text is an advantage to reduce eye stain.

Gaming is nice and smooth with no noticable ghosting. IPS panels are more vibrant, and display textures much better than TF, but on super high speed stuff like a battle scene, a TF can be more responsive.

Keep in mind that in reviews and negative of ghosting is nothing to be worried about. This is not 2002 when LCDs were not usable for gaming. They have come a long way.

Oh, and 27" for the most part have too large of pixels. You can see them clearly when in use.

Aside from apple or a clone like this: http://erie.craigslist.org/sys/4373783976.html

You will not want a 27" just yet.

There are plenty of excellent 27'' monitors. They are all 27'', 2560x1440, and IPS panels. The problem is 1920x1080 27'' monitors.

Also, why would you link to a craigslist ad for a monoprice monitor when you could just link to the monoprice monitor...

Good point on the resolution.

To lazy to find direct link. I literally looked at that ad right before seeing this thread.

I have a 27" 1080p monitor. I enjoy it, but I wonder what a smaller pixel pitch would look like. As it is, images look clear and nice and its enjoyable. The pixel size doesn't distract me or anything, but I have never compared it to a 1440p.

Which monitor are you using?

His signature says @120Hz, so the selection cannot be very large: 27", 1080p and 120Hz.

Incidentally, I have one that matches that query: Asus VG278H. The one that includes Nvidia Vision 2 glasses and has built-in emitter on top. 3D was the selling point, even though that is hardly ever used. (VG278HR is apparently a new version of VG278H. Bit cheaper VG278HE has "144Hz" instead of "3D". All TN-panels.)

I'm not the main user though, and haven't formed any opinion about the looks. At least, pixels don't look terrible.

I think I have narrowed down my decision to a 24" IPS monitor with 1900x1200 resolution. The two best options seem to be the Dell U2412m and the Asus PA248Q. They are almost the same price. Does anyone have any experience with the Asus panel?

Go to a store that will let you play with the on screen settings and eyeball a few. I have a 27" 1080p and am just fine with it; the disclaimer here is that my lens-corrected vision is only about 20/60, so YMMV. My wife, a casual user / non-gamer, says it looks fine to her.

I had an Asus 248Q and used it for photo editing, and it was great. The fact that it comes calibrated is a huge bonus that you don't get from the Dell.

Plus I believe that Dell is one of the ones with a horrible antiglare coating.

The u2412m has a very light AG coating. By contrast, the wide gamut u2410 has the brutal AG that makes everything look like bloody twilight...

I hate these decisions lol. 27" vs 24". TN vs IPS. 60Hz vs 120Hz. I've just about talked myself into keeping my old monitor.

Asus VG278H is the model number I think. As someone stated, 3D was the selling point and it works well, but I don't use it anymore. Its just too damn annoying and gaming sucks with it. The 120hz is great though.

Can't agree more!

Each day I am deviating, one day I think I will get the U2412M, next day I think nah, a 27" might be good. Then I think about low PPI cause I sit at 2.5 ft and blah blah blah.... Darn these decisions....

Still knowing I won't be upgrading it in next three years, I think a 1200p makes more sense than 1080p. However I was trying to find a PLS panel, but LG's IPS, extremely sorry, not a fan of IPS! But seems like no other option! No PLS with 1200p, at least not here!

 :hmm:

1080p @ 24" is best - above that then youre going to want to upgrade on resolution

In case anyone is curious, I ended up getting a Dell P2414H. Compared to my old TN panel the colors are much better. Gaming performance is very good as well. It does have a bit of that "IPS glow", but nothing to get upset about. For the money I spent ($207) I am pretty happy.

The only real complaint I have is with the placement of the USB ports. They are located on the back of the monitor next to the display connections. I am used to Dell monitors having the ports on the side, which makes them useful. Having them tucked away on the back means they are only useful for permanent connections.

Hmm, any reason for picking up that model over something like U2412M? It doesn't have HDMI right?

There were a few reasons actually.

First, we have some U2412M here at work and the AG coating on the screen is much more aggressive than something I want for home use. If I sit in front of it I can clearly make out the AG coating, especially if the background is light colored. This is fine for work but I think it would be annoying when gaming.

The backlighting technology is better on the P2414 vs the U2412. The U2412 uses PWM dimming which can result in the screen flickering. Some people are sensitive to that and some aren't.

Also, the P2414 is a newer model by two years. That might not mean anything but I went with the assumption that would result in two years worth of improvements. Also it is cheaper. That always helps!

The P2414 does not have HDMI but I don't see that as being much of a negative. It does have a display port connection and I wanted a DVI connection as well. For the record, I don't believe the U2412m has a HDMI connection either. The U2414h does though.

WOW! Now I have to research from scratch! U2412M doesn't have HDMI! How is it even possible! My 6 years old monitor has it! Jeez! And I want 1200p. And the updated model of U2412M is not available in my country yet!
Dear Lord! Utterly confused which one to get now!!!!!!!!
