Any of you know anything about medical school?

Ohhhh...That's low man...ripping on the radiology residents. Anyways...anesthesia is of course a good choice as well.

To some extent; having something besides strictly biology, chemistry, or pre-med will help. Degrees which set certain applicants apart like English, music, or social sciences can also be very helpful as supposedly this makes for a more "well-rounded" doctor. And that is seeming to be one of the goals of admissions commitees, to make more "well-rounded" physcians be that for better or for worse.



 
I'm not ripping on the radiology residents per se, anyone in their first couple years out of med school, makes some odd calls(God knows Ive made my share). I'd say it's probably the worst in radiology, anesthesia, and derm, the fields where your intern year has fairly little to do with your speciality of choice.
 
i think i will find some local hospitals near my house to volunteer in...this should strengthen my resume.

also, i have two choices for mcat courses, examkrackers or kaplan...what do you guys suggest?
 
I suggest save your money and self study like a madman.... using EK. and whatever material you can get your grubby hands on. Buy every single practice test you can. Trust me, I wish I would have saved the 1000 bucks I spent on Princeton Rev. I studied on my own the 2nd time and improved 4 pts.

I know you were not being entirely serious. I get ripped on all the time for being a radiology resident on my other rotations (medicine, surgery, ortho, etc) but I know it stems entirely from jealously....
 
I've found that if you are willing to get an engineering PhD, they'll try to convince you to stick around for an MD - even try to pay you for it! Of course, you have to turn over the better part of your life, which is why it's a tough decision.

Yes, you definately need some medical volunteer experience before applying to medical school. Not just for the initial application but during the interviews where you will certainly will be asked this type of information. If you have no prior experience, you will not be accepted. And to be quite honest, you should try to get in contact with a pre-med advisor at your college/university for this type of information as if you are serious about emd school, you need to be working on these things, ASAP.

As for review courses, I took the Kaplan course. I did extremely well on the MCAT and got scholarship money for med school totaling 40K. So, the 1K spent for the review course was well worth it for me. Anyone can study on their own and many will do well on the test. But, if you are really serious about it, then just go ahead and take the Kaplan course.
 
ok cool...also how much volunteering did you do? and the research that i did last summer and will be this summer, is not as important as volunteering?
 
update: am i competitive candidate with a 3.3 gpa a 34 mcats and very good research experiecne(co-auth on 2 papers). i just want to get in somewhere.
