Ya OP good point! We don't know the availability. I am guessing November?

Yes, I speak it fluently. But Ukranian is a different language that I cannot understand unfortunately. Although she probably speaks both languages :)

The only time I've seen 2GB make a difference is when the framerate was unacceptable regardless (like 5 vs 12 ...)

You have a 58XX card with 2G? Very nice -- you should be able to answer the OP's question then. Also, are you testing at 5760x1920 or the aforementioned low end single monitor 1920x1200 config?

Oh btw, Belarus here representin'. Yet another slavic language similar enough to Russian that it's almost understandable, but not quite. Can't remember more than a couple words of it, but I'm fluent in Russian as well.

The 2GB is probably going to be a per-vendor decision kind of like the 4850x2 which Sapphire went ahead with. ATI doesn't seem to want to make it a standard at this point so there may not be a bunch of different OEMs that have them. Personally I want one of these as well.

Going from 3 x 4870 1GB(each) to 2 x 5870 1GB(each) isn't good enough for me.:)

What are you doing, leasing your video cards? Wait a generation or three if you want a 'worthwhile' upgrade, use what you already bought ffs. 3GB's of 4870 should tide you over until there's something worth playing that even uses dx11.

um, did you even read the thread? 5870 >> 4870, he wants it, he just wants it in a 2gb flavor instead of 1 gb. Clearly he can afford it, why shouldn't he get it?

I guess it has some uses.

I must be missing something. All I saw was 1-2 frames per second improvement in minimum framerates in Crysis at the already unplayable resolutions, and 4 frames difference in GTA4 at 2560x1600, which OP's monitor does not support. Otherwise, there was no performance difference whatsoever that you could notice in gaming.

Maybe 2GB makes more difference with 1600 stream processors?

You are saying that because two HD4890 2GB in Crossfire show no improvement over two HD4890 1GB cards in Crossfire?

Maybe HD5870 in Crossfire is enough to make 2GB worth it? (especially with Eyefinity)

Almost any modern game would benefit from extra memory

Bit-Tech.net
Crysis - No
Fallout 3 - No
Far Cry 2 - No
STALKER: Clear Sky - No
Call of Duty 5 - barely Still can't beat GTX 285 minimums

Tom's
Crysis - 2560x1600 4AA No
Far Cry 2 - 2560x1600 8 AA - No
HAWX - 2560x1600 8 AA - Yes <-- but you are going from 18 to 23 frames, still unplayable, and it only helped in 2560x1600, not OP's resolution
Left 4 Dead - 2560x1600 8AA - No
STEALKER: Clear Sky - 2560x1600 4AA - barely <- going from 12.9 to 14.8...
World in Conflict - 2560x1600 4AA - No
3D Mark Vantage - Extreme - No

Can you please link any proof where the performance difference between 1GB and 2GBs is noticeable (i.e., go from unplayable to playable or at least 20%-30% boost)?

Also OP has a 24 inch monitor so by looking at 2560x1600 you can provide the worst case scenario, which he won't encounter. For his resolution, today, 1GB of memory is enough.

Enough for today? Maybe for you, and maybe if you don't wanna play any new games.

1GB v 2GB...

Still pretty much worthless....

That xbit article is pretty bad, which surprises me for them. No 16x, no GTA IV, not the proper conclusion I was looking for.

A review is bad if the conclusion isnt what you wanted....

Can we put this 'no need for more memory' idiocy to rest finally?

Seriously, people, use your friggin' brain before you post - he buys a card NOW then he will use it at least for while...

That's an X2 card, chief. The effective memory is one-half since it's split among two cards. So what you're really comparing is a 512MB 4850 with a 1GB 4850.

I'm mainly interested in the 5870 for eyefinity(as an improvement over SoftTH). At 5760x1200, having more than 1GB onboard doesn't look so silly.

Every single game in the review was tested with 16x AF. Or you are talking about 16x AA? I think 16x AA is going to crush even 5870 in modern games. You can hardly even use 8AA on Crysis/Warhead, STALKER: Clear Sky on 5870 at high resolutions since there isnt' enough GPU power.

GTA IV is more of a CPU benchmark with modern videocards. Its performance is horrendous on a dual core and even Core 2 Quads.

It is without a doubt that 2GB memory will make a difference eventually, but not yet, at least not on a single monitor.

4850 X2 2GB is 4850 1GB card x 2 vs. 4850 X2 1GB which is 4850 512mb x 2.

Please do your research before you revert to rude comments.

I think GTA IV, while it's far from being definitive of graphical prowess, does show that the day has not yet come when increases in graphic memory size doesn't help. I mean with 1GB memory you can't even run it at its highest settings with more than a 20% view distance. Maximum setting the game will allow is 32 but that crashes the game in reality due to memory leaks.

1G ain't gonna cut it for everyone. Yes, it's great for single monitor users playing a single full screen game. That's by far not everyone. I run the equivalent of 5120x1024 on my 1920x1200 24" *TODAY* (4 instances of Eve Online at 1280x1024, overlapping and virtual desktops) and I can barely do that with every setting at minimum. If I crank textures and/or FSAA performance utterly implodes as I exhaust on-card RAM.

Saying 1G is enough for any user is incorrect.

haha, what is your in game name? Also, what card do you use?

I just started dual-screen eve.. it got me!

The benefits of 2GB from 1GB is marginal at best for now. In the future its true that you might utilize the 2GB better. But in the future, there are already better card worth spending money on. For me, the only relevance of 2GB HD5870 today is only for Crossfire gaming where the added processing power will enable you to make better use of the 2GB of memory for each graphics card. But even then, make sure ur running at 2560x1600 resolutions. Otherwise ur wasting ur money on both the extra 1GB vram as well as ur Crossfire setup.

Okay.. rant finished.

I dont think you can make a comparison between a BMW and a graphics card with more ram. A car is both a sentimental purchase/ and ego boost for some and a means of transportation at the same time. While I don't wake up and think that my friends or anyone will compliment me on my 2Gigs of ram 5870, and neither will it get me more women :brokenheart: ("Oh look at him, he is packing 2GBs of video ram" -- that's double the average size!!!) ... but I get the point that you can never satisfy a human being's desire for getting the latest and greatest (or "bigger is better").

My point was just that 2GBs will be needed eventually, but imo, it will take at 1 generation of games/graphics card from today to make it worthwhile.

I suppose the argument that buying a 2GB 5870 is a way of future proofing in much the same way as 4870 1GB was to the 512mb version makes more sense. Then again, someone like Solofly who buys top of the line already is likely going to upgrade every generation anyway. So the idea of future proofing seems irrelevant.

lol i like your counter to the bmw analogy. Back when I was in grade school, I used to be pretty fluent in Russian. Too bad now I can only understand bits and pieces of two people having a conversation in Russian :(

I guess the key is how much more extra cost it is going to incur to get that extra ram. Say, a card goes for $200ish and the ram is around $30 more, I would do it. For $50 I would rather not.

One of the benefits of DX11 is significantly reduced texture size. So in actuality, as games start moving towards DX11, the need for a 2GB framebuffer (such as a GTAIV) would reduce.
