... Some of those older cards are extremely valuable.

Unfortunately with MTG, old doesn't mean valuable. Many cards get reprinted, losing value. Many cards don't get reprinted because they weren't useful to begin with. Some of the cards from the first sets were unique to those sets and so powerful they are banned from any tournament, which might make them valuable to a casual player but normal players won't want them. Even though it is called a "collectible" card game, people don't really collect them.

The last pack of cards I bought had a foil Liliana Vess in it. I had no idea what to do with this so I just gave it to a friend who still plays competitive MtG. Every time I see him, he thanked me for the card.

The only constructed event I played in was a creature + basic land event. I ran 4 timmies, 4 pirate ships, 4 clones, 4 doppelgangers, 4 flood gates, 4 man-o-war, and I forget what else. The concept was to doppelgang whatever I couldn't deal with and then return the original to their hand and/or kill it with the tims/flood gates. I eventually lost in the semis to a protection from blue creature.

I originally started playing in The Dark (surprised I continued when the next two sets were Fallen Empires and Homelands, arguably the two lamest sets ever). I quit shortly after Visions. Then a couple years ago some friends and I who all used to play started picking it up again, that was right when Alara Reborn came out. I started tournament playing again around when the Lorwyn block rotated out of Standard. I don't play Legacy or Extended, but I enjoy Standard. I also play EDH a bit.

I currently have 4 different decks I run. Mono green that ramps to big stuff very fast (not elves). Mono white that takes advantage of the new Battle Cry ability. Black/red infect. And W/U/G (aka Bant) that is minorly control based on the use of Venser and creatures with effects when they enter the battlefield.

I find Jace annoying, but not as bad as the swords right now. Sword of Feast and Famine and Sword of Body and Mind are too dominant right now and seem to see play in every deck. They've also caused a skyrocketing of the price of Stoneforge Mystic (which sucks as I've had 5 including 2 foils and got rid of them before the swords were released).

Yeah I've been trading my swords away. People can play their stoneforge all they want, my deck is entirely control and I'm not real worried about the swords. I have steel sabotage in my sideboard just in case, 1 blue to counter or bounce an artifact.

EDH(now Commander) is going to get big soon, they are releasing premade commander decks with special cards only allowed in commander!

havent played in years...want to get started again

any tips for noobs?

In truth, wait a couple months until the Zendikar block cycles out of standard. There's a lot of really good cards in the 3 sets that make up the Zendikar block, but with the whole block rotating out of standard this fall and Worldwake being sold out everywhere anyway, it's not worth trying to compete against those cards when you can't get some. And if you get them then most will leave standard anyway and plummet in value. Buy a box of M12 when it comes out would be a decent way to start back up.

I used to play a lot when MTG first came out and still have most of my cards (sold a few of them off to various people around the world). My son now plays MTG and Yugioh so I pulled out my old MTG cards to play with him with.

Came back during Zend, quit when Mirrodin came out. Was fun, just don't feel like spending the time on it any more.

Damn I remember playing this a long time ago. Used to have so many black-border Black Lotuses and Mox jewels, made the game not fun. 1 turn Disintegrate wins, 2 turn Shivan Dragon wins, 1 turn Lord of the Pit wins...

Game really started to go downhill after 2 or 3 expansions when the rules got way too complicated and everyone wanted to play tournament-style. Whatever happened to the fun of creating ridiculously overpowered/bizarre deck combinations and whomping on your friends with them?

Actually not necessarily a bad idea if you want to get started to go ahead now. The new deckbuilder toolkits are out and you could start now with just one of those. Even when 2012 comes out, 2011 cards will still be good. The old stuff doesn't cycle out for a while. There's a good chance Titans will be back with 2012 too, and Praetors are coming with the upcoming set next month. Might as well start now.

the friend that got me into mtg was on the receiving end of a 7 card mindtwist, before he took his first turn. he quit the game on the spot.
