1. Memory sticks are ridiculously expensive fro what they serve, while Minidiscs are about a buck each, holding about 5 of music at LP4 compression.

2. The battery life of the new Sony playera are upward of 50 hours off of a single AA battery. Try that with your Rio or Nomad

3. Minidiscs can now copy tracks and mp3s (automatically converted) from your computer at up to 32x speed. Not so cumbersome anymore, is it?

4. Try live recording of concerts and lectures with your mp3 player.

Minidiscs aren't going anywhere, and the rest of the world has a tremendous following of the format.

I love MD but the 32x recording isn't true unless you want LP4 compression which is about 63kbps. I don't want to listen to music at that sound quality. You can get LP2 at 16x speeds though record. It doesn't factor in the time to convert your songs though :(

WHY OH BLOODY why can't I get a fast normal compression recorder! instead of having to stick to LP2 which I don't want so I haven't bought one yet.

the 32x is also a useless rating as that is for PRE-CONVERTED ATRAC files. Otherwise, factor in conversion.

Personally, LP2 is good enough for me, and the speed is still better than 1x (overall around 4x on my celeron 720). There are 3rd party efforts to using a better method of transfering than the POS openMG software. You lose the preconverted files, but in the end, it's more stable and simpler.

True enough, 32x isn't a realistic transfer rate.
However, given the cheap media, the rerecordability, and the battery life, I think MD players blow thepants of any current mp3 player.

okay, my .02c - I've been using MD (Sharp 722) for years now......

I still love the thing. Media is cheap, I use it for snowboarding, kayaking, etc. I make digital audio recordings of my little 3year old Nephew and 1 years old Niece also. I can hook it into my car CD-player.

Too bad never caught on as it did in Japan (every 12yr. old in Japan is walking around with one of these things right now!). Probably the best use for my mindisc is recording live shows, concerts, events, etc. You can go see your favorite band, by the soundboard guy a beer and plug right into the soundboard - boom, perfect recording!

minidiscs are fantastic - you can get cd quality stereo recordings from a portable device.

while there is no compelling reason to get a minidisc player sloely for listening to music,
there IS a compelling reason to get one if you have any interest in recording voice or music.

visit www.minidisc.org if your not familiar with the site.

here's just one neat thing i recorded with my minidisc (sharp) recorder

heart sounds!

Just dusted my Sony portable minidisc player for the start of the school year. Fits nicely in my pocket while I listen to high quality Hawaiian jams while walking to class...if you've got a way to record using digital format (ie - optical audio out on my computer) it is the way to go...
