The Minidisc format seems to have lasted longer than I thought it would. I wouldn't say "thrived"... but it's still around.

I remember back in high school (about 6 years ago), I had a couple of friends who would make fun of it all the time:

Guy #1 -- You know what I'm gonna do after school today?
Guy #2 -- No, what?
Guy #1 -- I'm gonna buy a Minidisc player. They're awesome!
Guy #2 -- Hahahahahahahaha!
Guy #1 -- Hahahahahahahaha! Awesome?!? Hahahahahahahaha!

But anyway, I've seen a few around lately, and they actually have some interesting applications. I'm thinking about getting one to do some recording of my music practice sessions, as well as concerts.

Any thoughts???

I have 3 MD.

MZ R35
MZ R50
E900

I'm a big fan. The real time speed does suck but the size, sound and battery life are important to me. I would go for the MS Walkmans but the 10hrs battery life is bugging me and also the lack of inline remote is annoying. I also haven't listened to any music at the encrption that you use on them.....

(waiting for MS Walkman with 20hrs+, inline remote and I 'may' by one:D)

The new ones, called the Net MD I think, can store mp3 files on the discs so you can have 700 MB of mp3 instead of simply 80 minutes of music. I was surprised when I saw that the newest ones had this feature - it makes them as good as any other mp3 player, plus you can record live music with it. I think they're great, although I don't have the cash right now to buy one...:(

I hear ya... just too many hot deals around here!

The Sonys go for around $200 - $250 new. On ebay you can get them for around half of that.

A friend of mine does EVERYTHING on minidisk. Simpsons episodes. MP3's. Home movies. Our band's recordings. Programming projects.

Everything.

I was unaware that minidisc can be used for more than just audio.

*raises hand* I bought one a few years back. Unfortunately, I haven't touched it for like a year. But as soon as I'm not so lazy I'm going to make a new md! At least that's what I keep telling myself. :) But really, I like it, just making md's is too much of a hassle for me. But I have used my md to record lectures and concerts. They really are great for that. And because I'm nice an mp3 for you!

My favorite band covering Winter Wonderland!

This was bootlegged at a concert using an md player.

*Btw, it's not weezer, it's a band called Phantom Planet

....er no.

The Net MD thing lets you record music on to it at 3 various compression levels. You can have up to 320 minutes of it at MDLP4 which is about 65kbps. 160minutes at 132kbps and 80minutes at best sound using a CD players optical out.

The mp3 files are converted using the Sony software to convert them in to ATRAC before they are tranported via usb to your Net MD.

An MD can store 140mb of data.

I've had the same MD for the last three or so years. I use it for vacations and it gets the job done. Realtime recording does suck. I could really go for an iPod, but I can't justify blowing that much cash... maybe when the 5GB gets to ~$200.

Thank you much for the mp3. Very helpful!

Anyone know what type of microphone is required to do any decent recording? And at what price?

Ugh they were always too expensive, and for the price of a new Sony, you can get yourself a decent mp3 player, which is more versatile in the long run. I myself have neither, because i am a broke bastard. I instead burn things to cheap CD-R media and listen to it in *gasp* a regular CD player!

My wife and I were both DJ's for KSUA 91.5 FM College so we bought her a minidisc recorder and used it to make soundbites from movies or simply record soundbites from the internet. Ultimately, I bought a minidisc player for the car. Now I record MP3's out to my minidisc (just play them back in WinAMP and record through my optical digital connection to my Live! soundcard) so I can listen to them in my car.

I'm interested in getting a new MDLP (doubles the capacity of standard minidiscs) but I'm not sure the Net MD add anything that I can't do on my own with my optical digital connection to my soundcard.

I don't like the design of most of the mp3 players out there. Not aware of any that have a good inline remote like the E900 that I have either or 80hrs battery life. CD player is far too big to stick in normal pockets.

Ipod looks nice and is a bit bulky to fit in pockets properly but does look DAM nice and the firewire would be GREAT but the size and battery life........

You guys are talking about buying a new Sony MD for 200-250. At most you can get like 160min of music. Why not just get a Nomad 3. For 299 retail...I got mine for like 240 you get 20gb of music, data, movies what ever. You even get real time recoding at up to 320kps mp3 uncompressed wav. As far as battery life goes you get 10-11 hrs on one and if you add the second one (Which can be added along with the first one) the you get 20-22hrs. So with the advent of good HD mp3 players like the Creative Nomad, what can the MD do that the Nomad can't? I am not trying to start a flame war I am just curious, since I looked into this befor I bought my nomad last month.

For one thing, I have a MD in-dash player in my car. I have some incentive to stick with the format I've already committed my recources to. So no Nomad for me.

hey i love md players. i've had like 5 or 6 but then someone busted into my car and stole my MD head unit argh and i was a little down on them after that. mds are cool but often require too much work (realtime recording). thank goodness for MDLP and NetMD now though. nice ones are too damned expensive still. MZ-N1 is what...$350?

still i can't stand mp3 players because of low quality construction and expensive and small capacity media. but to each his own!

Purely size and inline remote.

I like my walkmans to fit in my pocket and not pull it down with its weight. My MD is 'only' 89g with battery and md intact. Has a great inline remote also which no mp3 that I know of has. I can't imagine actually going to touch the unit to change volume or tracks. Had the ease of inline remote with back light for about 4 years now and can't live without.

The Nomad would be great if I needed to transport stuff also but again the size is bugging me. MD media in England is cheap at about £1 each for 80 minutes.

Here is the inline remote for the Nomad II MG. The one for the Nomad 3 is comming out in a month or so. I'll give you size. The nomad is big. Just smaller that a cd player. But if you wan't small just get a Nomad two with a 128mg card. You can get at two hrs at high quality. As for backlite...all the nomads have them. And who said mp3 players have small capacity. Even the not HD based ones can hold over 2hr or at least 1 and a half with a 64mg card. From what I hear Md's can only hold 80min. But I just think its funney to call 20gb small capacity. Thats over 146 MD's. Thats alot of MD to carry around. Now I understand if you have already made the investment in MD. But fyi they do make car in dash HD mp3 players. Just my .02.

Nice thing is when using optical out from CD to MD recorder, song titles and stuff are also transferred over.
