Well my car suddenly died when i was trying to get out of a snow bank last week.

When i try to start it up, it sounds fine for the first few seconds, then it makes this na na na na, na na na na sound. If i flood it with enough gas, it sometimes starts up, but very rough and the exhaust is really loud.

I know its hard to tell without seeing it or hearing it, but if you can tell me a few things to check that would be great.

Matt

Too broke to get it fixed right now.

sounds like maybe you could have plugged your exhaust with snow.. from being in a snow bank anyways!!

First off, listen to Yield, go out and check to see if your exhaust is plugged with snow, then get back to me.

I think it's either that, or it's plugged with snow.. sounds very reasonable to me.

Well, if this is not the problem and you post asking for more help, you are going to have to wait for the morning, I have to go now and put my little guy to bed, night all :)

checked exhaust, all straight.

check antifreeze. there was none. filled it up.

I dont think its the antifreeze only because the car started up fine the day it went fubar. We've had warmer days here in NY recently that would've melted any snow stuck in the exhaust. Rightnow the temps are in the teens at night and in the 30's during the day.

I was gunning the engine harder than normal the day i was getting it out of the snow. I had it in 4wd, and found it out doesnt even work.

check your headlight fluid, sometimes the plugs in the springs can cause your windows to melt and the engine to sieze up and explode into what we like to call the 4th of july.

i know, sounds odd, but thats cause it is, i really dont know :)

im impressed w/ people thinking of exhaust is all, i would have never guessed

opps. motor = toast. probably spun a bearing cracked the block or 2000 other things when you ran it without coolant. just becase it is freezing outside does not mean you can run it without coolant.

so it can be 1 of 2000 things, not just the block.

just want to clarify

If there was no coolant in your radiator (Not the overflow tank), you may have either blown a head gasket and/or cracked the head or block.
Check the oil, if it looks like chocolate milk, coolant has made it's way into the oil, a sure fire sign that engine damage has occurred.
If the oil looks fine, start the vehicle (Make sure it has oil and coolant) and let it warm up, if steam appears out of the exhaust after it has fully warmed up, this would also be an indication of a failed headgasket etc.

If none of these symptoms appear, Go Here and extract any codes.
Follow the directions for OBD I.

i wouldnt doubt the car is done. it was leaking coolant forever, and then stopped b/c it was evaporating somewhere in the system. Had oil leaks, 4wd doesnt work. what a mess.

now im out any money i could've got for it. god.......:|

You can still donate it to a school autoshop or not-for-profit orginization for a tax credit. you maya lso get $50-100 if you sell it to a junk yard. if it has to be towed, expect $50 or less.

i live in NY

the leak was determined to be unrepairable. Brought it to my mechanic twice and nothing was wrong. Its just old, 14 years, and has been off roading a few times and pushed to the limit for a 99k mile car.

Nothing is irrepairable, get a better mechanic, are you close to Ct ?

i was gonna say that. While the 2.5L is not a particularly noteworthy engine, 99k miles isnt enough to kill it. Offroading has very little effect on the engine, mainly because offroading is not normally very fast.

depends where. i got ferries and other things from long island.

he told me there were no leaks at all. The antifreeze was just disappearing, no trace of it. No puddles ever, just every 3 weeks its gone.

There was coolant in the radiator when i checked, just the resivior was empty. Want to clear that up.
