Exactly, only I would be you in that scenario. Obviously the knife would only be drawn in a life-or-death scenario. I row for 45 min every day and know some H2H techniques. Unless I'm up against someone bigger than me (I'm 5'11" 170 lbs), I can take them down pretty easily. And even if their bigger, a kick to the groin does a lot.

Wow. If you're so buff and tough, why not take them all out with Chuck Norris roundhouses?

The girls need bear spray or a taser. A knife will just get you injured much more severely than just throwing hands.

Read my posts. I stated several times it would be suicide. That post was me saying that I am not some wannabe macho scrawny nerd. I can (and have) thrown a few guys to the ground in sparing matches. That's not to say I'm chuck norris, but I do have an inkling of what I'm talking about.

God some people are idiots.
Let me try to explain it irishScott.

Situation: Confronted by 10 angry drunk punks in a stairwell or hallway and there is no RA around or quick enough access to a phone (as he's stated multiple times). They decide to get rowdy.

Option A) Stand there like an idiot and get the living crap beaten out of him.

Option B) Whip out ole glinty and get killed.

Option C) Run like you just stole some sh*t at Wal-Mart.

If you pick Option A, then you're an idiot. I personally would like to go down fighting if a fight is inevitable. Of course, avoiding a fight at all costs is the best way (as the OP mentioned multiple times)

Now I know people will just read one part of this and ignore the rest. So I'll reiterate, read the freaking situation

Added option C, modified option B.

Agreed. The best thing to do would have been to walk up try to talk the people down from being hysterical while looking them each in the eyes. Then if they persist, call the cops, and try to pull the guy and the two girls away from the situation into a more public place.

It is about using your head and keeping your cool in any situation.

Agreed. Once again, R-E-A-D M-Y P-O-S-T-S!!! (Sorry, but only a few people are grasping this concept). If I could talk my way out of it, I would. The ONLY instance in which I'd use a knife were if my life or the life of my floormates in this scenario was threatened. If it's do or die, I'd rather land my a$$ in jail and be alive than be dead.

So 10 guys somehow got into my dorm building today, and apparently were doing the equivalent of stalking 2 girls on my floor over some video tape. They were obviously drunk, and just as obviously pissed. The 2 girls and another guy on my floor confronted them, I noticed what was going on about halfway through the discussion and went down to offer support. They knew some crazy sh!t (the girls' cell phones, AIM, the girls say none of this is posted online) They subtlety tried to provoke both of us guys, and some of them were obviously looking for a fight. Nothing came of it, but it was close for a while. In close quarters (we were crowded in a stairwell), a knife might have been useful if something had broke out. The other guy has given both girls his 2 other knives, but no one else on the floor has one.

Also, my university allows us to carry knifes < 6" as long their not switchblades or butterflies.

Disclaimer: Read the whole thread. I'm not going to copy and paste my responses here.

Disclaimer 2.0: Nobody seems to be following the original disclaimer, so here's the key phrase: We agreed only to draw if they attacked first. Period. It's not like we're going to bust them out, twirl them around and say GTFO the next time we see them.

Disclaimer 3.0: I DID NOT WANT A FIGHT. I MADE A CONSIDERABLE EFFORT TO NOT LOOK THREATENING. I'm not so stupid as to think the 4 of us could've taken on 10 guys. I'm just saying if it comes down to it, I want to be as prepared as I can be.

To your disclaimers. Grow up, kid. All it was was a bunch of teenage kids with angst going to college. You are included in this.

Don't get a knife if your first mentallity is to use it as a "defensive" weapon. Unless they had escalated the confrontation, there is no problem.

**EDIT**
BTW Knives are deadly weapons! Why use a deadly weapon as a "defensive" weapon. What ends up happening is it only escalates the issue.

Get pepper spray and a baton. If you are trained well enough, anything (keys, belt, stick) are all good defensive weapons. Knives are just for butch losers who want to have a reason to kill something. I could say the same thing about guns, but I know get flamed. ;) Plus I have nothing against guns or knives (I carry a knife myself), but I am a pacifist, and would only fight to protect someone I respect, and even then I wouldn't esaclate it with a knife.

I think the columbine kids would also be described as "kids with angst" Along with a couple hundred other more mild massacres involving kids my age (give or take). I've been marked by gang thugs before.

I used to go to a chipotle for lunch where a few Hispanic gangs hung out for my summer job. A lot of other business people ate there as well, but I was the youngest. ANYways, one day I got my food as normal (take-out, I ate in my cubicle) and walked out to my car. There was a Hispanic gang member checking it out, with an obvious knife on his belt (fixed blade, looked about 4" or so). He noticed me when we were about 25 ft away from each other (give or take) and gave me the exact glare that the guy in the stairwell gave me. He eventually got in his car and drove off after I averted my eyes and walked an evasive pattern, but if he had attacked me with that knife, I'd have been at a serious disadvantage.

I didn't eat at that chipotle for another few weeks, but one day I came back, and the gang members (who were eating inside the restaurant) still gave me weird looks. I never ate there again.

I wish to avoid, but at least be prepared for that type of situation.
