I was diagnosed diabetic 4 years ago, I've been on low-carb since then. Really helps keep the glucose numbers steady.

After a while I pushed it to very low carb, high fat which helped a lot more. It also helps my brain (5 strokes).

So I asked my neuro about ketogenic. I take anti-seizure meds alas, with side effects.

Neuro says keto is only for epilepsy, which I don't have.

I want to know if there is anything dangerous about ketogenic at this point. Since I've been pretty close for 6 months, and it's been helpful.

I'm looking for a more helpful neuro - one who also knows about recent diabetes treatments. but doc shopping isn't easy.

Any thoughts?

You might get more responses on reddit. They have a pretty active keto sub.

I'd like to tell you that keto/paleo is good, but with your medical history you REALLY should consult an expert. Thats not something you go to the boards about.

What do you eat? I'm prediabetic and so far I found out that I can really only eat meat and fats like olive oil. Glucose never spikes above 90 when I do that.

Ketogenic diets are helpful with diabetes, but are terrible for people with history of stroke, heart attack, or arterial disease. You really need to talk in detail with your physician and a dietician about this.

Thank you for that link, a lot of info, a surprise to me that reddit would take such an interest in keto.

Yes, I've consulted experts - all of my MD's. I'm still trying to find someone who is knowledgable about keto.

I figure this isn't something I should use the trial and error method with.

Thank you Yes, I'm trying to find some knowledgable professionals.

My cardiologist likes what keto has done with my BP, my BS and my cholesterol numbers. He's read some interesting studies of keto, stroke and TBI but he hasn't found anyone yet that he'll refer me to.

My former neuro was excellent, but I haven't found anyone yet to replace him.

My rheumatologist knows someone good, but they're on the west coast, not useful for me. keto appears to be useful for RA and lupus. Not something I'll experiment with on my own.

Meat, fish and coconut oil.

Coconut oil? Interesting. I've been using olive oil. Will have to try that. I'm eating pretty much the same right now but it's been my first month and just testing the waters to see what works.

very welcome. good luck to you.

ive done atikins several times and i wish i had found that on reddit long ago.

i dont like to do atikins induction for more than a month at a time or so, but its nice to see that people can do it for a lifestyle.
