Any info on the AData S599? Firmware upgrades on the way?

Hey all, I just bought a Microcenter rebranded G2 SSD which is an Adata S599 drive, and uses the SF-1222 chipset. I was wondering if there were any firmware upgrades for this drive somewhere as Adata hasn't listed anything. I think I still have the old firmware where it has teh resuming from sleep issue.

None yet. If you don't hit the problem don't worry about it. If you do, well then you're going to have to wait longer. Worse is that they told me that even if they have a fix that it may not be user upgradeable and you'll have to send it in for flashing under warranty.

got no problems here. inspiron 530.

I will say the ADATA S599 works differently than my x25-V.

On my PATA to SATA converter = no ADATA recognized.
on my PATA to SATA converter = X25-V recognized.

I think its a timing issue. I see the light blip on controller with the x25-v - not on the ADATA.

I'm returning this then, my computer needs the sleep function, power cycles can be very annoying. Any 64GB SSD's that have the issue solved? The Vertex 2 maybe, cuz I can get it got $82 shipped AR.

firmware update for G2 and ADATA S599 !! 3.4.6 !! brand new.

Make sure you have MBR partition and run as administrator (mac users sorry you have to blow the GPT and flash on a windows boxen!)

going to test on win7 and osx 10.6.5

ADATA S599
G2 Microcenter 64gb

both flash up fine!!

I attempted the firmware update on the Microcenter G2 64GB. The flash software indicated that the firmware was copied and the system rebooted as per ADATA instructions, but the firmware on the SSD remains at 3.0.1. I attempted to run the update from the SSD and from the secondary HDD, same results. Ran flash utility with administrator privilege as per instructions. I have been experiencing the no recovery from standby issue that is known with the initial release firmware.

System Specs
Gigabyte EP45T-USB3P
Core 2 quad q8200 OC to 3.4
Corsair xms 1600 4gb
Main Drive Microcenter G2 64gb
Backup Drive WD Green 1TB 7200rpm
Palit GTX 470
Vista 32

This error is very interesting, but I think that the procedure was good what did you do.

I made the upgrade my Adata S599 firmware from 3.0.1 to 3.4.6 five hours ago (and there was no problem -> the update program was working correctly.)

You should try to turn off the option called UAC (User Account Control in Control Panel). After that you have to restart the operation system.

In the end you should attemt again the full procedure. There is an important thing: you musn't make the flash procedure from SSD, only from the another HDD!

If you read this message or your attept will be succesfull please give me back a signal or a little message.

Best regards, Ronnydown

I just saw this thread and tried to do as you posted above. But for some reason, the program just doesn't want to see the drive. Not sure what the issue is. I tried running the program from a usb connected drive in admin mode, from the ssd in admin mode, but no luck. UAC is turned off. Thoughts, suggestions?

First you should make an empty directory (for example: Adata). After you should unpack all the files from the firmware zip into this directory. You must see 3 files in it, and try to run the "ssdupdate.exe" file with admin privilege.

I did exactly that the first time. New folder called Adata and unzipped the 3 files to that folder. UAC off, rebooted, ran the exe file as admin on external drive and it does not see the drive. Still no luck so far....

Emulex - any issues with AHCI/IDE mode that we need to worry about? How were your drives configured when you flashed them?

I wrote a short letter to the Adata support, because I have few problems with the new firmware. I say the least I wait the answer...

The lettel:

I downloaded the new 3.4.6 firmware from the site and I flashed it into my SSD drive. The flashprogram make a restart. My problems will be started...
The first problem was the next: the AHCI BIOS wrote to me the next message from SSD drive: "Smart command failed...". When the previous firmware version was into my SSD, I never saw this message.
The second problem: The temperature value is wrong with the new firmware, because it indicated to me about 65 degrees. The previous firmware version showed to me that exactly between 30 and 33 degrees.
In the end I think, the most important thing is my first problem. Please give me a solution. I would like to use my SSD corretly.

The config: Gigabyte EP45-DS3R with ICH10 southbridge from Intel
and an S599 64Gb SSD.

I ended up returning mine to Microcenter a few days before my return period was up. Firmware fix seems iffy at best right now, and I didn't want to get stuck with it if the problem was never resolved.

I see Microcenter has hiked up the price to $110 now.

all sandforce drives have the same problems. my callisto deluxe - same problem just not as frequent. draw your own conclusions.

this is new firmware - it works great. just have to make sure you have ahci mode - MBR partition - it will not see a GPT/GUID partition - and obviously not raid mode.

i'm testing it on my win7 boxen and macbook unibody and so far no problems. will update when i see a crash. the mac is pretty aggressive on sleep so it probably will show up first

Thanks Guys, Finally had success, the problem was i was running my SATA ports under IDE mode, not AHCI. The following is the entire detailed procedure so that others may benefit.

My Motherboard is a Gigabyte ep45t-usb3p bios 1.02d
My OS is Vista 32. Procedure for Win 7 is identical.
My SSD is the Microcenter G2 64GB, a re-badged ADATA 599
OS is installed to SSD with WD 1TB HDD as slave

1. Download Update to 599 from ADATA to a folder named \ADATA\ slave HDD.
2. Decompress using 7-zip to folder in slave HDD
3. Download Intel INF update from Gigabyte for my MB
4. Edited Registry to enable AHCI as to not have to reinstall Vista, Win 7 registry settings are the same;

4a.Open Regedit

4b.Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlset/Services

4c.right click on "start" key and choose modify

4e.In the value Data field removed existing value of "4" (Your value may be different) and changed to "0" without quotes, all other values where not changed.

4d.exited regedit and reboot

5.Entered BIOS during reboot, went to Integrated Peripherals and changed Sata mode from IDE to AHCI (default was IDE for my board) ,save changes and exit.
6. POST dialog for AHCI comes up detecting drives,no action required, normal boot to Vista, Standard AHCI controller is detected and all Sata devices are reinstalled, reboot when prompted.
7. Normal reboot. Ran install for Intel INF update, Intel INF updates Standard AHCI controller, prompted to reboot again
8. Sata AHCI devices are re-detected, prompted to reboot again.
9. Upon reboot, went to folder where SSD firmware was decompressed.

9a. Right click on SSDupdate.exe and choose "run as administrator" Drive is detected as SSD G2 series 64GB firmware 3.1.0.

9b. Selected 3.4.6.pkg in firmware package field

9c. Checked box next to SSD G2 series 64GB

9d. Clicked Download Firmware to Selected Drive button

9e. Dialog for sectors being written comes up, gets stuck at sector 855 for a couple of seconds, update completed message comes up and reboots

9f. During initial shutdown after flash, experienced Vista Image error and BSOD. shut down with power button.

9g. Reboot with power button, choose normal boot to desktop.

10. Ran SSDupdate.exe again to check update results. firmware rev is now listed as 3.4.6, Reboots successfully with no BSOD or Vista image errors , Done!

Changing to AHCI not only enabled the firmware update, but also makes the drive substantially faster. most of my background apps are now loading even before the desktop comes up. There is a new POST screen indicating AHCI is starting, its only a second or two, and not all Mobos are going to have this additional dialog.

so far macbook with aggressive power management = success.

pc with 1 minute shutdown of drive and S3 sleep = success (as much as the callisto deluxe that is also mounted, so a failure of either could be considered a failure of both).

you know you can call adata? lookup the s599 on newegg and you'll get an extension with a human in LA that answers and is friendly. he said the microcenter folks need to learn where the firmware is themselves (?).

if you ghost a raid volume to SSD (1 drive of a raid-1) - don't be surprised if you add a second drive it goes into RAID mode instead of AHCI. i had to go into the bios when i added the second drive, save.

otherwise the system thought the microcenter was part of a raid from the hard drive days (i ghosted my 7 to ssd). just a thought in case you did the same. ghosting doesn't remove the intel matrix raid tattoo ;)

I had the problem of the firmware update program not detecting my Microcenter rebadged 64GB Adata SSD. I am running Win 7 Pro 64-bit. I was running the program as Admin. I solved the detection issue by running it Windows Vista SP2 compatibility mode.

Note: the update program causes the system to hard lock but upon a reboot (reset button) and then the system prompting to restart after rebooting all seems to be normal and the firmware update was successful.

How do I get it to recognize my drive? Can I do it with the SSD in an external USB 2.0 Dock? Or do I have to plug it into the SATA ports on my mobo?

Worked on my 64GB Microcenter drive. MSI 785GTM-E785 mobo in AHCI mode.

Ran program as administrator in Win 7. It found the hard drive and updated the firmware. It rebooted automatically. Win 7 loads, auto configures itself, and reboots again.

PC posted in 1-2 seconds and loads Win 7 immediately instead of the (before upgrade) 3-5 seconds post and slower Win 7 load. Hard drive speed test still show the speed being the same as before the upgrade, on par with 200MB/s seq read.

But yeah, I went from a 32GB V2 Patriot SSD to this 64GB microcenter drive and thought this microcenter drive felt slightly slower. I thought it was due to a mobo firmware upgrade I did before the clean install. I actually wanted to restore the original mobo firmware, but couldn't get a hold of it. After the microcenter firmware upgrade, everything became as snappy as when I had the Patriot SSD.

Hey folks
quick question... i updated the firmware on this drive ( i have the adata s599 64 gb) but when I check my temp reading software ( i'm using Speccy) it says 66C. I know its wrong because it used to be at 30 ish C before the firmware update so is that normal?...I guess the firmware update screws up the temperature readings on this drive?..I just wanted to confirm that because no matter what temp reading software i use it shows a crazy temperature number .. like its always above 55C.

Feel it, if it feels "cool to the touch" then its the reading thats messed up. I'm still trying to get my drive recognized. I hope that helps. The whole "cool to the touch" thing would be when the drive is slightly below your body temp, so you'll know that its running 33-35c.
