Which of these games are good (perhaps a bit more complex than risk) but not super complicated (like axis). Also do any of them offer TBS combat during the combat round ?

March of War launches today sometime, its a turn based multiplayer game with factions. Looks interesting, not sure how it plays yet though.

Risk actually was officially published quite a few years ago-back in the Win98 era. I remember at the end it was being given out as a prize in cereal boxes. It was quite a good and faithful port, but the only multiplayer was hot seat. Somewhere around here I probably still have my CD, should try to hunt it down.

Read my post; post #22.

The best bet is Gary Grigsby's World at War.

Although, I'm not sure I'm reading your post right. Do you believe Axis and Allies is "super complicated"?

If so, none of those games listed are for you. Axis and Allies is one of the simplest grand strategy TBS games out there. If you consider that "super complicated", well...

There is Lux which is a risk clone. It has 100's of user made maps and scenarios you can download. You can make your own maps or program your own AI's and put it up for others to download.

I don't think any of the games you mentioend actually have TBS combat. I'm thinking something along the lines of total war but instead of RTS combat TBS combat.

You're talking about TACTICAL strategy. Which is moving units in a BATTLE. That's not what Risk is. Risk is Grand Strategy, involving moving entire armies around maps and regions.

As far as my post goes, actually, yes, several of them have "TBS" TACTICAL strategy. Any of the AGEOD games, for instance, are all turn-based.

If you're looking for moving individual men and regiments around maps during a battle turn-based, hands-down, the best games on the market are the Combat Mission games.

The later games, like CM: Battle for Normandy, can be played in real-time, turn-based, or WE/GO (semi-turn based), depending on your preferences.

Wow, that Hearts of Iron game looks fucking insane. There's no way I could play that; way too much to learn and I'm too dumb.

OP, I know it probably ain't what you're looking for exactly, but you might wanna check out Wargame: Airland Battle. You create a "deck" of units that you can call in before the start of a battle, as well as in-battle, though it is a real-time game otherwise.

I played Risk once, last Christmas with some of my friends. I've been playing strategy games like Civilization, RTKs and lots of Paradox Games. My impression of Risk was that it felt more of a game of luck instead of strategy. Just cant get into it, a string of bad dice throws and you're a goner. Maybe I just need to play more and get a feel of the game.

Anyways, back on topic:
Hearts of Iron series might seem indecipherable from screenshots but they are not actually -that- complicated. As long as you take the time to check the forum and wiki to read all the rules, tips and trick, you gonna do fine.
