I haven't been following the HDMI video card scene, but someone I know would like one if there are any decent ones out now?

Or do you just typically for most of them use a DVI/HDMI adapter?

THANKS

I had an HD4670 for my HTPC with HDMI out. More and more cards are popping up with HDMI capability. The adapter is pretty simple though and works well. Are you looking to pass just video over HDMI or audio as well?

Basically same question I was going to ask. Noticed the ati 4550 is passive and states to supply hdmi through the dongle. Wondered if that meant I can hook up to a tv through the dongle and forego the monitor?

DasFox - I use the DVI/HDMI adapter and it works well on a LCD TV and on a LCD Monitor. With an internal lead between the S/PDIF terminal on the MB and the videocard, you can pump sound through the HDMI connection as well, which is great for a TV but not so great for most monitors.

ronnn - yes, you can hook up the HDMI cable to anything that will accept it, a TV or a monitor.

Using HDMI adapter with SPDIF audio pass thru on a 9800GTX+ right now. Going out to a 46" LCDTV. Works very nice.

If a 6600gt can do the job, it does leave hope for the 4550, which besides being low class - is cheap with passive cooling.

Oh so you use HDMI for now just for Video, and SPDIF for the audio?

THANKS

All ATI HD 2XXX, 3XXX, 4XXX support without the need to connect an external SPDIF header, digital audio is handled by the GPU. You will need to used an ATI(and only ATI) DVI to HDMI adaptor and 1 is usually included with each card.

If you read the review Anand did on this very subject a while back? the ATI 45xx cards are the best, hands down, HTPC cards.

There are different varieties... at my local supplier I found some cards that had only DVI out and would pass audio from a sound card and combine it with an adaptor and then they had the ATI cards that had the built in HDMI (I got the Asus 4550).

Thus, if you install both the ATI Cat drivers... and then head on over to Realtek site and download the ATI HD drivers... it turns your video card into an all in one.. video and audio are passed through the video card's HDMI without any adaptor or anything. I don?t even have own an audio card.

This is thus far the only way to get up to full 7.1 LPCM out over HDMI to a receiver, if that is what you are aiming for.
