computer security basics by o'reilly looks alright, but it was published in 91, and i've heard a bunch of people say parts of it are out of date. just wondering if you guys had any other suggestions. anybody read "applied cryptography"?

Yes, but I don't consider that to be a book on "computer security." Most of the best security-related material is online (sans.org has a huge library, cert.org does as well, nmrc.org, ntsecurity.com, etc.). A good reference book authored by the founders of Foundstone is called "Hacking Exposed." TCP/IP Illustrated by Stevens is an excellent book on TCP/IP and it's related protocols. It's not directly related to security, but having a profound knowledge of tcp/udp/arp/icmp/ip can be extremely valuable.

Depending on what your focus is, there are other great resources. What are you looking for?

thanks for the sites... i dont' really have a focus right now, i just thought it'd be nice to get a deeper understanding of security basics. i was hoping that i could find a topic i liked from there, and concentrate on it.

ah i love my university library... that tcp illustrated set is pretty expensive (at least for me) good thing my library has it 🙂 it's checked out currently though, i just put a request in for it. in the meanwhile i'm checking out "Web Security, Privacy and Commerce 2nd edition" by garfinkel and spafford
